    Have watched quite a few of your videos over the past few years . A lot of the time , you come up in my search results via sawmill related . Today I wanted to look around at solar kiln builds again because I'm just at the point where it's becoming a need not a want . Anyhow , I finally hit the subscribe button , and it's really nice to hear someone talk about Jesus .

    When using concrete block it’s extremely important to understand that they have very little strength when turned with the holes on the side. The holes have to be on the top and bottom to have strength. Many people have died using them in this way.

      That's the first thing I saw. It's hard to watch. Those blocks on their weak side, just ready to crack and fail. Oh, the carnage.

    If you aren't too far along, you may want to reposition all your concrete block in with the stronger axis vertical. Right now they are on their side, not the way a mason would ever build a wall. Green wood is very, very heavy, and you regret your current configuration
    Good luck with the kiln, and the subs!

      Willliam Metz Love your videos. I do the same as you, use whatever is at hand. With a little common sense it usually works and in case it doesn't, well, I just chalk that up as a learning experience.

      That actually it would have been worse. The block may have held up better that way but due to the lack of surface area it would have sunk like a rock. Take for instance would you sink faster standing in mud or sitting in a chair? Either way blcck is not a good choice. Concrete is cheap and it doesn't take much effort to build a form that incorporates pier and footing. Also he could have gotten 90 degree corners simply by using the 3-4-5 method. Getting the base stucture as acurate as possible helps when it comes time to start building. Also would have used hangers on the the joists.

    Just started watching your channel this morning. I just finished this first episode of the solar kiln build. It didn't take me long to find someone else comment on something that jumped right out at me, and that was your block orientation on the foundation. When I was a kid in auto mechanics class, my instructor told us of the dangers of using concrete block to hold a car up. The danger not being the use of concrete block so much as the orientation of the block. I am sure by now you have had an ear full of people telling you that concrete block is meant to be placed with the holes perpendicular the the ground and not parallel to it. I mention this not for you, but your audience. I am very interested in watching the rest of this series and you may have covered this topic already, but what I am interested in is if the any of your foundation blocks cracked or failed under the load of thousands of pounds of boards?

    • @Clydesdale2045
      @Clydesdale2045 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was just writing to tell him his concrete blocks are the wrong orientation and that's very dangerous (and very weak because that orientation allows wracking). When I was a kid, a teenager was working on his car in my town and used cement blocks and he had them in this orientation and he must've given his car a bit of a shake and they wracked and collapsed. After many hours his parents came out to tell him dinner was ready, and found him dead under the car.

    Congrats on your 100 subs, you have doubled that number this month already so even more congrats on the 275, almost to 300 now..Good job.
    Another great video, quick question, do you think a guy is messing up by not having a tractor before he gets a mill? I cant afford both this year, been looking at log arches to drag wood to the mill with the 4 wheeler, but curious on your thoughts since you have the tractor and a mill.
    Love the Life lesson and little sermon you added in on this video while doing the dirt work. Great job my friend.
    Thanks again and have a blessed week.

    • @falllineridge
      @falllineridge  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Heartland Outdoor Living That’s a good question. I think where there’s a will there’s a way. If you have a four wheeler I think you’d be fine with going ahead and getting a mill. Obviously, the four wheeler will have some limitations, as does my tractor. But it would probably teach you what type of tractor you need for your mill and put you in a more informed position before you get a tractor. There’s a guy on here, Jeffrey Beyer, who skids logs with a snowmobile. Tractors make life much easier, but you can live without one if you have to.

      Try an experiment. In dirt or sand, orient a concrete block the way Fall Line has, and orient another the way you propose. Add some weight and recheck in two to three months. See which has sunk down into the sand/dirt and which hasn't. Fall Line's orientation isn't for strength, but for stability. Just saying...

    I don't understand all of the chatter regarding his faith and foundation story from Jesus. People actually commenting that they liked his channel but are leaving because of this? Do you hate God and faith that much that you simply want to leave because of a 1 minute discussion, on his channel, that you freely can enter and leave?
    The truth is buried deep within these folks, but they are too prideful to admit it and it angers them. Let go of the anger and dismissal of Jesus, your life will improve 1000 fold.......

      I came to watch a man build a kiln on his property, the fact that he mentioned Jesus in HIS video, has nothing to do with it. I am personally a believer, so it doesn’t bother me at all to hear it, I’m glad he did. I’m glad we live in a country that allows him to do so freely. If you don’t like the fact that the man is a believer and wants to mention it, then make a mental note that he’s probably going to talk about the lord in his videos and either mute him, or don’t subscribe. Either way, but if all you can do is make a negative comment about how he was building and speaking his mind and heart at the same time, then maybe both of you need to find something else to do.
