  • FULL DOCUMENTARY: Crossing HURON... A Journey Across the World's 4th Largest Lake by Canoe... Join us on this epic journey across Lake Huron. This epic canoe adventure takes us through three Ontario Provincial Parks, French River Provincial Park, Killarney Provincial Park, and La Cloche Provincial Park. We traverse the North shore of one of the world's Great Lakes, Lake Huron. We retrace the paths of the Indigenous peoples and voyageurs who came long before us. Epic wildlife, stunning scenery, challenging weather conditions, and beautiful Crown land camping, including Philip Edward Island, make for an exciting and unforgettable journey.

Normally (as you would know all to well) I spend so much time on my own editing and it was a nice change to have Ashley involved. Looks like you have had another amazing summer Jon. Amen to your closing monologues Keenan & Ashley! Kindred spirits and "if it was easy, everyone would do it", right?! So many moments in this one just breathtaking and what an epic paddle. These water are jaw dropping. Best beer ever award goes to you Keenan ;-) Ashley, your meals look SO good. Awesome trip guys and dogs!!! Love your videos. I can see your dogs are used to travelling in a canoe. I'm hoping by next summer I can get a new dog to join my adventurers. Question?? How big is Blue and what breed? Tks

      @CanoeTheNorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Kathie. Thanks so much. Our dogs are definitely used to being in a canoe 🛶. Betty Lou is a Australian cattle dog. She’s around 45-50lbs. Amazing dog but if you’ve never had a cattle dog before it’s hard to explain how intense these dogs are. They put 110% into everything and have seemingly endless energy. As I said before though she’s an amazing dog. Thanks for watching Kathie and always appreciate your support.

    We just discovered your series! AWESOME!! My wife’s parents (dad and late mom) still own the PITFIELD GENERAL STORE you paddled past in the Killarney Channel! It was so cool to see that. We were hoping you would be going inside the store to stock up on supplies or a bag of chips lol
    Now sharing your video with Killarney friends and family :) thx for a great video - well done. And yeah - omg that HUGE bass you caught! Wow

      @@CanoeTheNorth haha that’s too cool! You should film it next time! Terrie’s dad Bill is turning 89 this year and still working there some days, as is her baby sister Sue ;) Terrie and her siblings were raised in the beautiful loft above the store (most amazing view across the bay) and Sue has been living up there for at least as long as I’ve been with Terrie 🏳️‍🌈 (going on 29 years!) That store is very special. One memory she brings up is of her dad jumping off the dock every evening after work and many seasonal boaters who would bring her little gifts when they would come stock up at the beginning of the season. That store front from the rear view has been captured many times in photo and paints, in fact a local artist is currently auctioning off a painting of it right now as a fundraiser to help her brother and his wife. I’ll email you the poster so you can see the painting. Such a small world. And believe it or not, out of all the episodes, the crossing Huron one is the one we picked to watch first cause we were hoping to see footage of Manitoulin Island as that is our permanent home for the past 15 years (Silverwater - best sunsets in the world). Low n behold…. there was Terrie’s store! And the channel view. Sooo soo awesome!! So ty!!!

    What's a wonderful trip. Two things, where the hell did you get that sail? That thing looks cool. Also, Did you guys have any bears come into camp? I would think with 2 dogs probably not but with all that you filmed thought I would ask. Thanks for the mention this morning. I cant find it anymore and don't remember what it said. I was a bit hung over this morning when I saw it. Resend it to me please. Thanks again guys, can't wait for the next one.

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Erich. Sounds like you've been enjoying yourself which is Awesome! I'll see if I can get Ashley to resend that for you. The sail was actually included with a used canoe we bought a few years ago. It's AMAZING. We have had some great days using that sail. Ive seen a few of them for sail on eBay from time to time. I don't believe they make them anymore so you'll have to find a used one.
      As for the bears.......we have been pretty lucky to have never had any close calls with them. The only time we had one come close was actually the first time we canoed along the north shore of huron. We had one close to camp but the dogs go nuts and they always seem to run away. Its the same in the canoe. As soon as the dogs catch the sent of the bear they go ballistic. Thanks as always Erich.

      Hi Alan. Thanks for the comment. That bird is a Sandhill Crane. Beautiful and huge bird. We seem to be seeing more and more of them now. As sad as it is to see the water freeze up we are looking forward to winter as well. Thanks again!

    • @Alsatiagent
      @Alsatiagent 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sandhill cranes were once used (efforts continue) as surrogate mating pairs in an effort to save the last Whooping cranes left on Earth. There were only 52 Whooping cranes left alive in the 1970s. The surrogate program has presented challenges to U.S. and Canadian scientists but they have managed to increase the population to approximately 800 with the help of nature preserves and conservation efforts. Sandhills are the only species of crane that are not in danger of extinction although the area where Ashley and Keenan are is the Southern most limit for their summer breeding season. A & K are close to where a Whooping crane was found dead, shot by some moron, four years ago.

    Too bad the only really nice day was the last, but so long as you don’t get too cold, rainy weather can be kinda cool too. Beautiful place. I’ve seen almost nothing about Lake Huron. I think one other reason it’s great to be on those trips despite the hardships is we’re in charge or responsible for ourselves, but the biggest for me is it’s simple.

    Absolutely insane video. The editing was 10/10 and the quality was amazing! I love the french river delta area/phillip edward island area. I've camped on spots that you camped on which was awesome. Never seen the massive boat at the Mcgregor bay cement plant. 10/10 video. I hope you make another video around the phillip edward island area!

    I bumped into you again. (Likely with TH-cam help) I sailed Lake Huron for years, French, Kilarney, Baye Fine, Bustards, Little Current, The Straits of Mackinac,, and paddled some of French and Kilarney, Collins Inlet Get a spray deck from North Water with the integrated skirts, if you are going to be out on Huron. Be careful. In a 30 foot sailboat, a sound weatherly boat, I have been in 3 to 7 meter waves. Huron is capable of 12 to 15 meter seas. Not kidding. No exaggeration. Just a brisk day on Huron will lift 2 to 3 meter seas. 15 years since I've been up that way. Well,, I did paddle a round trip across the Straits of Mac last year. (Boy Scout Camp out). I have always wanted to do McGregor Bay. (That might take a full month.)
    An additional note. Spoil yourselves on the way in, or out,, Kilarney Mountain Lodge was a real treat. Dining room, heated pool .. a bit of sybaritic pleasure. I have paddled and camped the entire length of Lake Powell (Colorado River) But I stayed at Wahweap and indulged in the Rainbow Room. Laughing,, In Green River, Utah,, Ray's Tavern. Trust me, I could go on and on.

    Should the dogs have life jackets on?

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Beverly. We actually always used to put life jackets in our dogs. The reason we stopped is because they were getting skin infections where the water was being held against their skin all day. We decided in their best interest to not have them wear life jackets all the time.

      @CanoeTheNorth  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Well all I’d say is that people travelled that water for thousands of years with no dry suit on. I’d say that staying close to shore, avoiding large open water crossings and knowing when you set up camp are much more important factors in keeping you safe than a dry suit.

    No life jackets for the dogs. What's your reasoning?

    • @CanoeTheNorth
      @CanoeTheNorth  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dave. We do have life jackets for the pups and always used to use them but they kept developing hot spots where the life jacket would hold water against their skin all day. We found that without them we didn’t have the same issue of them getting sores on their body. We have had to stop trips before because of this. It’s not a huge deal on one or two day trips but on multi day trips we can’t have that happen. Hope that helps explain. We love our dogs like family and only want the best for them.

    • @goodolddave
      @goodolddave 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CanoeTheNorth Thank you for your explanation, and reinforcing why I shouldn't jump to conclusions... I had a pair of Newfoundland's (and other large breeds) myself, and understand the hot spot issue, though I wouldn't have thought that would have been the reason. Seeing both of you with life jackets on, in rough water, in a canoe, but the dogs didn't, put me in judgemental mode. I know that you know Newfies are known swimmers, as many breeds are, but many don't understand that at their level in rough water it's easy to not see shore and swim in the wrong direction, to their peril. It's good to know that you consider their safety seriously.
