I never played Mother 3 but I listened to the beginning and hear what you're talking about; it's a type of drum called Tom drum, and in a lot of 80s music they were especially popular before introducing the next phase/part in a song in what I think is called a "Tom fill". Also thank you, I didn't realize it has been 3 years haha, that's a long time ^^; I still upload music if you're interested! I make a lot of remixes but also a lot of originals, I've just been a bit slow because I've been focusing on making my game but I should release a handful of tracks before the year ends :)
