Neil Young is no opera singer, but his voice can convey any feeling there is in human beings. He is one of the greatest performers on a stage, you are never bored or looking for someone else to be singing. Seen him four times and it is always a captivating experience. He is THE MAN. "Like A Hurricane" is one of his most satisfying songs. He has NO weaknesses.

  • @kevincaulder96
    @kevincaulder96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I agree with you Lex that Neil Young's vocals are honest. It is like an instrument in its own right. You combine that and his off kilter guitar distortion and the song really paints a sonic painting from a tru artist.
I first heard this song in the late 7o's. It was late night and I was listening to the rock station WTUE in Dayton, Ohio. After setting my new JVC boom box at the head of my bed this song came to play. The radio had a reverb switch that made the song swirl and possess my ears and carry me away inside the hypnotic music. The song was part of Two for Tuesday. And the next song was even more powerful. CORTEZ the KILLER dragged me along the slow motion river with the story of gold, a woman, and a new world and empire built on the backs of the Actec people.
If you can accept the limits of his vocals, Neil Young is a brilliant songwriter and musician. And even further than that, few can come close to affecting you.
    DOWN BY THE RIVER
    SOUTHERN MAN
& CINNAMON GIRL are all worthy for reaction. Enjoy.

This style of Neil for me puts him as the godfather of grunge, even if he didn't mean to be, he was ahead of his time and I think if Kurt was still alive he'd be doing his songwriter thing just like Neil.

We used to play this song with my band many years ago and it's one of favorite straight-ahead rock pseudo-ballads, plus, it only takes about 5 minutes to learn. I actually haven't heard it for years and now I wanna put it back in the set list! Neil isn't the greatest technical guitarist, but I've always loved his solos because of the combination of his own cool, unique technique and phrasing which is instantly recognizable and his solos incorporate something that is frequently lacking in flashy technical solos from other guitarists which have tons of notes per measure....passion and feeling. Regarding his singing voice...it seems to be a common complaint from people who haven't listened to a lot Neil's music that he's a lousy singer, but I think that's due to them not being used to, or not liking, the unique timbre and delivery of his vocals because in my extensive exposure to Neil's over many years, his pitch control is generally pretty good (good examples showing that are the "Live From The BBC" videos from 1971 in which he performs solo acoustic versions of Old Man, Heart of Gold and a few other songs and his pitch sounds very good in the ones I've watched). I'll admit there are some songs/performances in which he sounds a little more pitchy (this being an example), for whatever reason. It's also much harder to stay perfectly on pitch during a live performance, especially with a loud full rock band in a big stadium (which is compounded if there are any issues with the monitors or mix). One other thing...all his classic older albums were recorded without the benefit of Autotune, which is used on probably 95+% of contemporary songs (overused, in my opinion), especially pop/country/R&B/hip hop songs, and a lot of artist now use it live, which I think is pathetic.

Yo. I've seen hundreds of concerts. And some of the best were tiny ones. But the 4 times I saw NY with Crazy Horse, I was "blown away" (to quote the song). They are magic together. They'll play a 15 min song and we love it, it's a sacrament or something

I envy you - I've seen Neil and the Horse one time at Austin City Limits music festival in 2012. They were pushing Psychedelic Pill at the time which was cool, but the highlight for me was Down by the River - watching Neil, Ponch, and Billy in a tight little triangle jamming for fifteen minutes in front of a bunch of confused twenty-somethings. It was beautiful.

My first time seeing Neil was the "Trans" tour, supporting an outlier techno album (designed as a bridge to his autistic son). And it was brilliant. Every time since, on his own and with Crazy Horse, just amazing.

Lex - Totally agree with you! Neil's lyrics and playing to me are just honest and authentic to who he is and that is the charm. There are better techincal vocalists and guitar players....but the imperfections in his voice and playing is what...to me, makes his music perfect :)

Excellent explanation of his artistry compensating for his voice - I happen to love his voice. The thing with Mr. Young is, eventually you will hear that song that sticks with you forever. There is one for me on this very album - Will To Love

When Neil left Winnipeg (my home town) to go to hit the "Big Time" in Toronto, I think it was a record producer there who told him to stick to his guitar. Much to their surprise, he went on to become a member of Buffalo Springfield, had his own band "Crazy Horse" and become a member of " Crosby Stills Nash and Young " I also think his singing is like his guitar playing "a little different" but together, oh so good!

Lex hit the nail on the head. The guitar solos convey every stage of emotion that a human goes through during/after a hurricane - be it either a physical one, or one within a 'deep love' relationship.

I saw Neil Young on the Rocking in the Free World Tour, about the 10th row fromthe stage. Like a Hurricane was the encore, he hammered that guitar until two strings broke. Great show with Sonic Youth and Social Distortion as the opening acts.

Neal Young is always worth a listen, this is a truly great song and so appropriate with what has just happened. For me, when he is rocking out with his often backing band, Crazy Horse, he is at his rocking best. See his classic Cinnamon Girl live with Crazy Horse in 1992 or so on their Weld tour, it is one of his finest moments and his guitar solo at the end is breathtaking, see the video, not just the audio track. Enjoy! 🎵🎸🎤🎹🎶

Honest is such a great descriptor. I also think of Neil Young as portraying the rawest emotion you can hear. Out of CSN&Y I love him most. He is a paradox, like we all are if we look really deep. Musically, his guitar and voice are a perfect match. He can go hard and rough like most of his catalog with Crazy Horse. But he can also be soft and tender in ways that will surprise you. If you want to hear that side of him, check out Expecting to Fly by Buffalo Springfield, Only Love Can Break Your Heart, and Harvest Moon, the sweetest love song I think I have ever heard. And yes, Neil Young always BRINGS IT live.

There is an anecdote out there that describes this as the song in which Neil Young does the second best guitar solo in the history of Rock 'N' Roll, sings a little bit, then does the best guitar solo of all time. I don't know about being the best solo, but it's certainly the most incendiary. He runs, jumps, shakes, headbangs and almost flies. Beautiful.
