  • This is a rare opportunity to own the Nitinat Chief. A 72’ historical tug converted to a modern, comfortable, capable cruising vessel. To experience more of this unique vessel contact: Dan dan@calibreyachts.com 250-850-7247
Past, present, and future. This is an opportunity to own a piece of floating heritage and to further the story. The Nitinat Chief was built in 1941 by West Coast Ship Builders Ltd. at Vancouver BC. All the fir used in her 12 by 12-inch keel, heavy keelsons, 2.5-inch planking and sawn frames came from logs selected by Charles Sorenson, her first owner. Sorenson built her to exacting specifications to be used to tow logs booms from the Nitinat Lake area in southeast Vancouver Island, over a 6-foot bar-at high tide-and into the Pacific to Victoria. Over the years she’s had more owners, more engines, and various paint jobs. For more of her history: nauticapedia.ca...
Today, the Nitinat Chief has morphed into a pleasure yacht. She has 3 cabins, sleeps 6 easily, sports a galley to please any chef, and is a bright, airy, lady of luxury. Her entire superstructure was redesigned. The decks are now aluminum. The engine is a 1972 Deutz 500hp. She’s maintained her strength while adopting technology. She’s a blend of tradition, elegance, power, and grace.
Where her future lies has yet to be determined. She might become a charter boat, attracting all kinds from afar. She could become a research vessel, or a mobile office with the addition of Starlink. She could become a home to someone with the imagination to live outside the box. Or, she might become your very next adventure. Nitinat Chief’s future is up to you.

I have to say it’s been really well thought out and the details are evident, I would guess it has a water maker if you’re going 2000 miles or thereabouts. Somebody was right to convert this vessel and it works so well. Whoever is fortunate enough to own this will be certain to have a great time wherever they go.

There is a feeling you get from a operating a vessel like this that no modern craft can offer. You instantly become a participant in her history. WWII was in full roar when she was first launched. Train was a common mode of transport, no TV's, no cell phones, no jet travel. At the helm your are immediately transported into a simpler time, that intensifies that natural feeling of wonder, whenever you head out into the chuck. What a simply gorgeous vessel that will always hold pride of ownership. I empathize with the current owner, who's time has come to pass her onto a new caretaker, that I can't help but envy. Now that's a boat.

That ole Deutz will be hungry and it is an old tug boat, so you just know it will be drinking the fuel.
You would definitely want to move it to a bay some where and use as a mothership.

No chrome or wood rails to take care of. All painted for easy maintenance. Not sure about the heat vent in the bottom of the wet locker with dripping equipment. Water would go into the vent. 2,000 nm range at 9kts which is pretty quick for that distance. Drop it to 7kts and get 3,100 miles. It's built like a tank and maintained very well.

Fun work boat for Alaskan waters. She is a most practical vessel to convert into a small school ship for middle aged folks that need some movable deck space to move and develop balance and sea skills on. Renewable energy systems with some new deep cycle energy management would be welcome and a great contrast to the historic 32V dc system. SHe has been rewired and I would love to see the install. A tuff IT server for managing on board production and cinema work flow for the crew. ARCGIS & Lidar missions above sea, rov and auv below sea and ICE edge. I would love to learn the complete history of this vessel. She is big enough for a small 100 ton sea school, with mission connecting Alaskan and Canadian schools with progressive coastal programing during these challenging times ahead. What will the USCG suggest we do with this vessel to comply with the tuff Arctic brash navigation regulations. Was she built to ice standers?

Truly a boat out of our history books and we don't get to see many like her age in today's time of 82 years old. I'm so glad she's been taken great care of. Was it a 12,000 or 18,000 lb boat lift on her upper deck. You can have a huge fishing boat with anything you can fit or squeeze on the boat deck floor, but then you are just adding upper weight and we don't need that. So stay with a light 14 to 16 foot rib boat and 10 HP outboard. I love this boat an the history and the age makes it more valuable to us who truly love and appreciate old boats and today's boats. Another great boat video Mr. Richard. I don't know of anything about it I would want to change on her, maybe after living on it for a while I might come up with a idea. Not changing out the TV's to a bigger size or newer. No I don't watch TV anymore. I might make all bridge monitors all the same so they're bigger for us older people who have vision problems to see screams easier. Great boat and tell owner who's selling her, he took very good care of her for the past 20 years and who ever buys her will enjoy her as much as all the prior owners have. Take good care of her and she will take you out on a great adventure and bring you safely back home.

There is a lot I like about this boat. I suspect there is not enough freeboard to get it safely across the Pacific to Japan and Korea let alone the Atlantic to the UK. It's very cottagey, which I usually like but not in this context. I think if I were to buy this boat, I would want to upgrade the interior significantly, and add AC. But a single engine and rudder means no redundancy.
