Joy is an emotion that everyone wants but it remains difficult to find for many. If we are the children of God and walking in the spirit of God we have to have conscious, continual and contagious joy which has to be cultivated. In contrast, happiness comes from our external circumstances such as buying a new house, car or job. These things give us temporary happiness and it rises and falls like a thermometer. True joy that comes from God is spiritual and eternal. Nehemiah 8.10 says, “The Joy of the lord is my strength”. Nehemiah was a faithful servant of God. He built the walls of Jerusalem. They had many enemies who didn’t want them to reconstruct this wall but Nehemiah took the responsibility and saved the people of Jerusalem. He didn’t do this work alone but he had many dedicated people with him. Despite the difficulties and overwhelming situations that he faced; he encouraged his people by saying that the joy of the lord is your strength.
Children of God should be grieved when they are confronted with their sins through the teaching of the scriptures every Sunday and through the rebuke of the pastor. Pastors have the authority to rebuke us. Don’t get offended, it is for your good. Every Sunday we are gathering to hear the teaching of the word of God for our hearts to be transformed. If our hearts are transformed, our dead situations will be transformed. Repentance means to change our mind from the wrong thing and that leads us to the right action. God convicts us of our sins out of kindness. All kinds of sorrow will weaken our spirit. It is god’s joy that empowers us to face difficulties and overcome obstacles. It is his joy that has a tremendous source of strength that gives us life. What is this joy? It is an ability to go through every season of life and have the inner cheer that circumstances can’t quench. The joy of the lord is the super power that forces us to take on a positive cheerful mindset based on the knowledge of who God is. Jesus said in John 15.11,” These things I have spoken to you so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be full”. Jesus was a man of sorrow and acquainted with grief but nobody ever had joy like Jesus Christ. As Jesus loved righteousness and hated wickedness, therefore God anointed him with the oil of gladness beyond his companions. The difference between joy and happiness is happiness depends on external circumstances. Unhappy things are going to come but we should have the joy of the lord. The joy of the lord gives us strength to face our life challenges but happiness cannot. Joy of the lord gives both happiness and joy. When we seek god’s kingdom, we will have the joy of the lord as well as happiness. Joy of the lord keeps us safe from every wild beast harming us from inside and outside. Life is meaningless and powerless without the joy of the lord. Obey and help others to obey then your joy will multiply and you will have great reward in the kingdom of God.
