- My friend Will and I interviewed Billy Corgan, lead singer of the Smashing Pumpkins at Vintage Vinyl in Evanston, IL. He stopped by to shop for some music on National Record Store Day on Saturday April 18th, 2009.
A lot of people have been wondering what the song playing in the background is. Here's a link to it:
• The Lovers - Frog 'n' ...
This video goes to show how decent a guy Billy Corgan is. I had waited 18 hours in snowy weather to meet Billy at an autograph signing in 2000. The Pumpkins had a show they were playing that night at a small venue and obviously tickets were sold out. When it was my turn to meet the band and get autographs I told Billy how big a fan I was and how we tried to get tickets for the show and how we were disappointed we couldnt go, and he told some assistant to put my girlfriend and I on the guestlist.
He smiles three minutes in and it's so cute in such a geeky and adorable way
no u
Niks He's Dracula.
Billy seems to be a cool and intelligent man. Great improvised interview!
He's fuckin' gorgeous.
*Irish
I miss record stores, especially when I found the Aeroplane Flies High boxset for only $20.
Very cool to see famous dudes take the time to answer some questions in an honest, friendly way.
One of my ears feel neglected
What a nice person :)
Thanx for posting this interview ;)
Cool stuff. It's weird but he almost seems a little bit shy or timid. Definitely not like other celebrities with inflated egos :D.
Wow! I've always wanted to hear about Billy's favourite format in music and bands and such. I've always wanted even to talk to him about this. Great interview! Boston's the greatest band, man!
He was really cool in this interview. I love his songs. they usually unpredictable and great fun sound.
Billy I freakin' LOVE you. Your music will forever be the essence of my youth. xx
Billy Corgan is one cool cat. Always loved that about him, humble and a guitar god.
Nice of Billy to take the time to speak with the interviewer. He's the man.
He seemed pretty nice. So cool you got to meet and interview him :)
thanks for posting! we kind of rocked it when we got this interview. haha! fun journalism at its finest. also, support record stores, people! they do a fantastic job, and vinyl is cool.
Downright lovable.
I STILL! love Billy.
LOOOOVE YOUUU!!!! BILLYYY!!!! FROM JAPAN!!!!!!He is SOOOO COOOOL!!! HE is my HERO!!!
Great to see him Happy and Working
He looks and sounds good/healthy. Good to see. Always been a fan of his.
A true musician. I love the vinyl editions of his albums. I think vinyl > high res streaming Tidal > cd > Spotify
Thanks! Yeah, the interview was for a package for class, so getting the sound for my voice wasn't really the goal. But yeah he was super nice, and very courteous.
He seems like such a nice person.
My fav band.
Older music is the best.
I go to that record store all the time! Go Steve! That place is unbelievable. Didn't know Billy shopped there. That's also the record store in High Fidelity.
Great video quality (aside from not alternating the mic so we can hear the interviewer's questions). Its funny to think that Billy was just shopping in this store and people didn't notice? Thanks for posting this.
he is such a sweet guy
When you ask a question, take the mic to your mouth, when you are ready to hear his answer, place it towards his, hard stuff.
very underrated- my fav guitarist tho-whish him all the best
He made one of the best albums of all time in my estimation, and he pretty much made it all by himself. Seems like a super-nice guy too.
Mellon Collie? Or Siamese Dream? Or... gish? My personal favorite is Pisces Iscariot. Aged amazingly
An indeed REAL musician..nuff said
He's so cool.
huh? his voice is exactly like he 's singin, it's obvious
thank you for diagnosing me. and my comment was not meant to demean billy, etc. i've been a fan for 15 years and support him unconditionally. i was merely stating my inference(s) about him.
This is SOOOO C00L!! ;-D
Vinyl Records will eventually save the music industry. And the Pumpkins will be apart of that
very well said!
sp rocked! billy is awesome, pls come back smashing pumpkins. You were my fav band!
Pixies were great in every way. I'm glad i had the chance to see them in 2004.
he seems like a really nice guy
whoa, this was only 4 days ago? he still looks really great for being 42, he's ADORABLE. i have this massive unhealthy crush. and it's so cool how he takes the time to talk to non-famous people...i'm jealous of this interviewer. damn.
I agree and one thing makes me admire Corgan is his tightness and honesty writing songs or talking for medias. Once Rolling Stone Mag asked him for his favorite band actually and he didn´t name a band from his lable neither his country. He noticed the independent band SWAVE, giving very good comments about their song "In the future" and what is cool, the animated singer of this band has his same face! hahahahaha
the guy looks so cool and willing to chat...
This is awesome! How are the people in the backround so calm?!?! I'd be flipping out, and probably end up tackling him XD
Lol
They are probably used to meet him there
I think that's really nice of him to do that
Best band in the world
Nice guy.
he's a nice guy
Yay! I found the video where he giggles!! :D
well said!
never seen any celeb's in Vintge Vinyl but I heard Cusak's record store movie was inspired by the shop---whatever--Cusak doesnt even bother to say he's from Evanston when asked....all the same, I've lived within a few stones throws away from the place since it opened, and personaly can attest to the fact its a great shop run by a truly nice guy---kudos to V-V
He couldn't be more right. The only reason record companies fazed out vinyl is because it is enormously faster an cheaper to record, produce, and manufacture music digitally. If it was based solely on making the artists' music sound its best, all musicians would be recording to 2 inch tape and pressing vinyl.
He still looks ridiculously young
Yes, he is atypical guy. I think, that he bacame more ordinary when he became a star. I like his early song much more, than the latest.
yeah. cool guy.
right on brother! i agree
@tetilt
Actually if you have an an touched vinyl record the sound is better quality that digital or cds
because for cds and digital releases the sounds is compressed
but the sound from vinyl comes from the physical properties of the disc so they dont have to worry about compressing the file to make it all fit
What Billy talks about @ 1:20 is a VERY important point. In Analog world there is a frequency that is accentuated that (and this word has been turned into the next 'like') "Literally" tickles the inside of your ear. Whereas in DIGI-WORLD that overtone can't function properly. Part of this is why you hear "albums" being mastered at hotter & hotter levels over the past 10 years. Digital remastering isn't the end all, be all.
OMG that store is 2 blocks away from my place!!!! Grrrrrrrrrr Im going there everyday til Billy comes back :(
I find it very hard to believe this was filmed in 2009
It was! Sorry you don't believe that 🤷🏿♀️
@ak47popper is that the "rotten apples" album? I got that for Xmas one year and its still sitting in my collection basically untouched.
Cool guy...ok band.
HAPPY MONDAYS POSTER IN THE BACKROUND!!
Go back to releasing VINYLS Billy! Please. By the way, which record is he holding up??
And the music in the background really kicks ass! Who is it? And which song?
Great interview you guys. This is an interview I've been waiting for a long time!
no way ive been there. i love that place. another good place is Reckless Records in Chicago
@JoddTamison He meant digital is more inviting. If you re-listen, you'll notice he said when young people hear vinyl for the first time they are surprised... because it's more real. That's what he was saying.
wow from the way he sings I would have expected him to sound much more different.
hes very good at interviews... dam
korrdxl thanks for voicing the thought in the back of my head
YOU WORKED IN A HEAD SHOP RECORD SHOP IN WELLSVILLE OHIO CALLED "THE HEAD SHOP" SOLD RECORDS, HASH, MARIJUANA, PIPES, PAPERS, BONGS, STONES, PARAPHERNALIA, RECORDS TAPES POSTERS BLACKLIGHT PARTY DECORATIONS LIGHTS JEANS TOPS JACKETS IN THE 1970S ON MAIN STREET
@ipiximeat you can tell by his music that he's pretty damn sharp.
chili peppers are amazing in their late career
the past is real it made the present period.
hes human just as u and me
@jumpinjoe88 no he says vinyl is more inviting and warm. ask any audiophile / producer/ mixer / audio enginer
ha, he had The Children Of Lir by Loudest Whisper, an Irish record ;O)
yom yom yom yom
Oh yeah.I always wondered why he havent done them yet.
I would be beet red in the face if I randomly walked into bills. My face would hurt from smiling. What a guy. Why aren't there more hunks and generally sweet men like this everywhere? Screw me! Where are all the mysterious charmers? Where have they gone? Sigh---- doomed!
@Mugen251 near chicago. Does he live near me?
Mr. Corgan is a geezer. End of.
I got a kick out of that. funny.
righto!
dude u r so lucky, does he come to that store everyear?
@johnnybaills where do you live?
@johnnybaills Where do you live?!?! lol
@meleemaster1up
The guy is super normal, I met him in downtown Chicago... He hangs out like everyone else. I swear I wouldn't doubt if he takes the train. He is super approachable.
What two records is he holding up? Alphabeat and The Children of the Lir?
How so? I mean a band before recording in the studio, is nothing but a band of musicians. I think he was suggesting that listening to an album on vinyl is pretty much like hearing a band perform live...there are often no overdubs or 24 tracks...or something crazy. It's just raw and original.
I think this shows that everyone has two sides: True, he's egotistical about his music, but at the same time, at a 'normal' level, he is a personable, nice guy!
You really shouldn't say Nirvana sucks. I mean, if you don't think they're the best, that's cool. But the thing is, Kurt never wanted to be the best. He just liked playing and writing music. I respect anybody who does what they love to do. And this is coming from a SP fan.
Craiglovespepsi : like many artists, he suffers from mood disorders, and being expressive type, moods tend to be evident. And sometimes people come across the wrong way. Artists generally experience stronger and more complex emotions than the average person, they are going to have their bad days, and get frustrated. As a musician sometimes words are annoying and you would rather communicate with song
They didn't literally conquer the world. That takes tanks, guns, and missles. They sold a lot of records. Thats it. They happened to be what the public was looking for after the excess of the 80s. Right place , right time.
But to answer your question, quite a lot. Including, just about every popular band from Chuck Berry, to the Beatles to Kiss to yech, Poisen sold millions from three chords.
The bigger the band usually the simpler the songs. Rush never conquered the charts.
what is the song in the background!
The Lovers - "Frog 'n' Snail"
tools got a hell of a lot more talent than most bands out there right now. plus theyre a totally different genre of music so idk why they were even brought up in a billy corgan video.
no! he was just feeling awkward. billy c. is a total ham and loves any camera time.
I've seen interviews where Billy seemed like such a dick! Then you have interviews like this one where he seems so cool, friendly and inviting. But one thing that is always evident is Billy is intelligent! And I like smart people haha I'm 35 now and altho I've always known of the SMashing Pumpkins I've never got into them or gave their music a real chance until very recently and I must say this band fucking rocks!!! A very talented and interesting band. I've gained a whole new perspective on Billy Corgan and he's a very interesting guy! I'm definitely a fan
my left ear
As far as sound quality goes, vinyl is the best there is. CD's come in second, still pretty good, plus they're portable. MP3's are just horrible. It's like listening to AM radio. Every song sounds like it was mixed in mono sound when listened to on MP3.
well are we talking 128kbps mp3? 320 should be ok but of course FLAC VINYL rips are where its at
