  • For any of you folks laboring under some type of “stay at home” orders-and even for those of you who aren't-here's a forgotten film noir classic from 1945 to help you while away some time. It's called “Scarlet Street,” and it stars one of my favorite actors from Hollywood's Golden Era, Edward G. Robinson. It's also directed by another legend, Fritz Lang, and is notable for being one of the first Hollywood movies where a principal character isn't punished from bad deeds.
The flick gets tons of great reviews at IMDB, where it's earned a 7.8 rating (which is very good on that site). One of the best reviews also sums up the plot:
    *****
“At the very beginning of this film, we see....the single, most perfect noir moment: Chris Cross (Robinson) is given a dinner, a nice little send off for a nice little man. On his way out, a friend asks if Chris is going to ride the train home, as is his normal pattern. Chris has something on his mind though, and chooses to walk instead.
That one single moment, that one choice... and because of that, this man will lose his home, his wife, his career and the very thing that makes him want to continue, his art. One moment, one choice, and an entire life is destroyed.” THAT is noir!”

So get out the popcorn, have a cold beer or maybe something a little stronger, and settle back and enjoy this gem from nearly eight decades ago!
