  • Here is one of my favorite early songs to play on my vintage phonographs and music boxes. Written by Gus Edwards in 1905, this is the wonderful old automobile song, "In My Merry Oldsmobile" as played by one of our 1905 Mira 18 ½ inch Concert Grand console music boxes. I have included the song lyrics below. Thanks for stopping in for a visit and I hope you enjoy the video!
Young Johnny Steele has an Oldsmobile
He loves his dear little girl
She is the queen of his gas machine
She has his heart in a whirl
Now when they go for a spin, you know,
She tries to learn the auto, so
He lets her steer, while he gets her ear
    And whispers soft and low...
    Come away with me, Lucille
    In my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we'll fly
    Automobubbling, you and I
To the church we'll swiftly steal
Then our wedding bells will peal
You can go as far as you like with me
    In my merry Oldsmobile.
They love to "spark" in the dark old park
    As they go flying along
She says she knows why the motor goes
    The "sparker" is awfully strong
Each day they "spoon" to the engine's tune
    Their honeymoon will happen soon
He'll win Lucille with his Oldsmobile
    And then he'll fondly croon...
    Come away with me, Lucille
    In my merry Oldsmobile
Down the road of life we'll fly
    Automobubbling, you and I
To the church we'll swiftly steal
Then our wedding bells will peal
You can go as far as you like with me
    In my merry Oldsmobile.

@Roderick Matheson I don't know about Olds, but I know GM (which owned them) started out building carriages and at that time were known as Durant-Dort. Studebaker did the same thing, originally manufacturing wagons and carriages before transitioning to motorized vehicles. While we're on the subject, the Chrysler dealership in my hometown also started as a blacksmith and wagon shop in the 1850s and converted to an auto dealership some time in the early 20th century.
UPDATE: I just did a search and apparently Olds' father was a blacksmith, but that's the closest I can find to Oldsmobile having any pre-automotive history.

You have NO idea what listening to this piece mean to me! In 1973, I went to work for Oldsmobile Division of General Motors in Dallas, Texas. It was the most fun, perfect job in the world for a young man like me. "My Merry Oldsmobile" was a favorite with everyone in the office and we even had some sheet music of it in our supply room (I might still have a copy of mine around somewhere). My path with GM was a fascinating one with several other Divisions but Olds was my first and favorite. Thank you so much for posting this Music Box version, it certainly has brought back many memories.

One of the songs I would play on repeat for my daughter. After her daddy's favorite and first car that saved his life.

My father always drove Oldsmobiles. This disc exudes all the joy of riding in the new one he brought home every few years. Thank you for posting this.

Ada In Norway Sometimes the majestic sound of a music box is almost as good as the original. There is a special magic in these old music boxes.

My grandfather had a 1901 Regina music box with a mahogany case~~ it's still in my mom's house, & we still use it on holidays. "Silent Night" and "Oh Tanenbaum" sound amazing on it, as does, well, anything~~

Hurrah! What a wonderful melody! It is pleasant and enjoyable to hear the melodies played by music-boxes. The chiming sound of needle shaped crystals on disc picking the toothed circular frame. Some antique tall case clocks marked the hours of the day by playing melodies on built in music-boxes like this. Some other tall case striking clocks too played melodies on built in music-boxes just before or soon after striking the hours on tubular bell or coiled wire gong. Nowadays these types of music-boxes and chiming clocks are electronically imitated by some quartz clocks because they contains electronically recorded and programmed circuit board of sound chips connected to speaker.

Yes, I never understood why many of the most popular, enduring songs of today are near impossisble to find on vintage record. Along with this one is "Take Me Out To The Ballgame" which is so hard to find and even "Charleston" is very hard to find!

Really enjoyed this one thanks! Strange how once popular & catchy tunes can be hard to find. Early versions of: 'Just Like The Ivy' & 'Bird In A Gilded Cage' were so popular, yet hard to find these days.

  • @tiga4180

A partial explanation could be that some of the big stars who 'owned' the songs were: 1) Not comfortable recording. 2) Their voices did not suit the acoustic method. Notable exceptions like Harry Champion, Billy Williams & Geo Formby Senr. recorded prolifically, but examples are often well worn. Champion's tunes were so 'catchy' that they were probably played to destruction & hence hard to find today.

Bad camera work. The only really interesting part of the disc playing is the section from the spindle to the right edge, you know, where the sounds are triggered. This camera work kept drifting off the right edge to show the left side of the disc. I'd say a good 80% of the time I could not see the high notes. For the future, get a tripod, set up the shot so the spindle is just visible screen left and the drive wheel screen right with the hold down bar at about 1/4 down from the top. Then stand back and don't touch the camera while the disc plays. Pre and post play you can move the camera around and show all the relatively uninteresting wide shots you want. But please stop screwing up the one thing that is of interest while in motion.
