    All of Mozart's 'late' String Quintets are masterpieces. Change my mind

      His early quintet in B flat isn't bad.

    Mozart has been my constant companion for the last fifty years (I am 72). He is always fresh and new, and I know a great deal of his music by heart. His feet are planted firmly in this earth of ours, and his head is in the universe. I cannot imagine my life without him.

    5:57 wow... It's hard to tell from that cello sound that it's actually a viola... As a violist, I am relieved almost to tears that the viola can produce this sound.

    I've much enjoyed my odyssey through Mozart's six string quintets - splendid works all of them (with the possible exception of No. 1) - and it's so helpful to have the score. Thank you!

      Number one is amazing, I recommend going back to it, it is one of his earliest masterpieces in my opinion (but I am a bad source as I don't know the exact age he composed his other early pieces - I just know he was 17 when he wrote it). The first movement has a very rustic character in the theme similar to this one, funnily enough. The two middle movements work well and the final movement is optimistic and wonderful. It is unfortunate that he did not have the same ability to write counterpoint, but you can't expect a 17 year old to be as good as a 30 year old Mozart in that skill.

    The second movement is simply outstanding in its movement, its flower-like lighness, its dainty progression, a masterpiece of interweaving dulcedo. It strikes you almost as a dance (of daffodils?) Notice how Mozart designed the first viola - great chamber music!

    Don't know if I am right, but it seems to me that the sound is quiet warm on these period instruments... Anyway thanks for uploading all the quintets of Mozart! :)

    From 17:27 a superb example of the early romanticism invented entirely by Mozart before Schubert: chromatic melody modulated by an unsteady open harmony counterpointed by the cello.

      Nah that was Schubert that barely counts

    • @gezaradai2958
      @gezaradai2958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bach already invented romanticism.

    • @_Athanos
      @_Athanos ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mozart didn't "invent" romanticism, he certainly started going the way, but so did Haydn and Clementi in his time, romanticism was a general artistic movement and no one "invented" it

      Even more ridiculous than the original comment, Bach was one of the most conservative composer ever, and if you think that showing me a prelude from his WTC and saying "it's emotional" is enough, you don't understand baroque music and the fact that it was indeed very formulatic but not dry in the slightest
      Also, if Bach invented romanticism, what about Scarlatti or Vivaldi for example 🙃

    Mozart used his phrases again from time to time. But I have trouble remembering where I've heard 8:19 - 8:22 from. I know it's from another work of his. Like in the 21st piano concerto 1st mvt you'll hear him phrase out the 40th symphony well before it was composed.

      Piano concerto no 15, 3rd movement, bars 164-165.

    • @stevenak115
      @stevenak115 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@ykd5l you are 100% correct, thanks! It had been awhile since I listened to that piano concerto. I noticed that right before that Mozart composed a 4 note line with the strings right after the piano plays that reminds me of Beethoven's fate motif in his 5th....
      anyways, I find it both intriguing and inspiring to know Mozart could take simple lines and put them in any work he wanted. some people think that that is being lazy. but as someone who has composed for 7 years I find it very creative, and not as easy to do as it seems

      Considering how much he wrote, how many themes he has per piece (way, way, way more than his contemporaries or most composers that followed), plus the fact these pieces were generally heard once or only a few times and then never heard again, it's actually shocking he did not use more of them over and over. It's quite odd when you find him reusing a big theme, like in the finale of concerto no. 25, which was based on a gavotte from Idomeneo which he wrote a few years earlier. He must have had a real affinity for that one.

    Excellent because it's Mozart, but can't say the same for the recording. The balance between the parts is off and sometimes the violins are almost inaudible no matter how loud the sound is.

    19:31 the 2nd violin hangs on to the high C dotted minim for a bar, it's marked as a Bb in the score 🤔
