      Railway path from 5 way junction was good,but you wasted time by using the Trinity tunnel. Had you used Hawthornvale,the path was right there,easier gradient than the climb from Trinity Crescent. I'd have exited the railway path at wester Coates & went straight along the A8 St John's Rd,where you were up at the Scotrail TMD. Try it again using my suggestion,but only once the electrics at Newhaven have been sorted,newest section of line & they have crapped out,pantographs getting damaged apparently 🙂

    I am amazed by the seats in the Edinburgh Trams, although I haven’t seen a full review of the trams and their interiour yet. But they appear to be extra comfy, made for long distance trips even. I am jealous.

    Nice to see the tram line extended to Newhaven. Plus there are plans to extend the Edinburgh Tram to Leith and Granton. And to form a loop as well. And to extend west to Newbridge village and to Musselburgh. Edinburgh is such a lovely city.

    70 km/h trams off-road. Pretty standard. The Stadtbahnen here in Cologne/NRW - models of which also run in Manchester and London-Croydon - are certified for speeds up to 80 km/h. And in the urban semi-segregated secitons (street-level, but separated from road traffic, that is) they actually go 60 km/h. However: There is no priority for trams over other traffic here, which is really a bugger... But yes, on the interurban, open field, routes - connecting Cologne and Bonn, lines 16 and 18, former main-line rail lines - they go full-speed: 80 km/h. If not more, because older vehicels had been certified for speeds up to 100 km/h (with a technically possible top speed of 120 km/h, I think)!

      They are one of the great things about north Edinburgh. The fact that you can walk/cycle from Newhaven/Trinity/Leith all the way to New Town/Stockbridge/West End/Roseburn without encountering any motor-vehicles at all is amazing.

  • @paulharvey9149
    @paulharvey9149 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    That's pretty shocking actually - why build a new street tramway and not give any priority to the trams? The cycle route could also have been slightly shorter, by coming off the long (Five Ways) cycle-path at the remains of Murrayfield station and then using the A8 Glasgow Road direct to the airport turn-off - though admittedly, I'd probably also use the cycle route via Balgreen. The reason it is so bumpy is because tree roots have created bulges in the surfaces, by the way!

    Another example of a race you could do is the 200 bus vs the tram from Ocean Terminal to the Airport. That would be a fair race outside of rush hour when the 200 gets stuck in traffic in NW/West Edinburgh.

    Great fun Jen, I have ridden the trams in Edinburgh and that city centre section is just daft. However it was good to see the city again and hear that unique 'doong'. Maybe try Cardiff to Cardiff airport, train and shuttle re bike. You just need someone mad enough to do the bike.

  • @annabelholland
    @annabelholland ปีที่แล้ว

    Even if the bike would be faster than the tram, I would still take the tram because not only does it save me from doing the work, but I also enjoy riding all forms of transport and the tram is only available in a few UK cities.

    I enjoyed watching this. We come from Edinburgh though we left over 40 years ago so it was great seeing familiar places. 40 years ago it might have been my late father in law driving the train that passed the tram on the Glasgow line. Jen, you went UP Leith Walk, not down it! Next time you want a tram v bike race we might volunteer with our tandem.

  • @daveharruk
    @daveharruk ปีที่แล้ว

    Entertaining but the cyclist took a really odd route - I often cycle to the airport from Trinity and I always go via Easter Drylaw Park, Davidson's Mains Park and Clermiston - simply because this is the shortest route and is also pretty quiet, but also a pretty smooth surface. Slightly hillier, but on an electric bike, this is hardly something you'd notice. It also avoids all main roads (except a small part into the airport itself which isn't easy to avoid). Also, there is no need to initially go along the shore - just go about 100m past the tram stop and there is a junction which leads straight to the Ferry Road cycle path - no need to go through Trinity Tunnel (which is a longer route, as well as with more road traffic). The cyclist would also have an advantage in practice because the cycle stands are right in front of departures, so the walk into the airport is shorter.
