Very reminiscent of Suge and DR's early days where artists from sides of the tracks were making money and good music together. Before PAC and Biggie were murdered to say the least. That's exactly right. As a musician myself I grew up with homies that were connected. I never joined in a gang. But when you got homies that are in the gang culture and you are just trying to get your g.e.d. and get a degree, it's hard to chill. Not to mention many of them got on that heroin. When you see your homeboy in the hospital in a coma because of an overdose, it hots you hard.

It's been a hot minute since L.A./the west coast, aside from a few artists here and there like Kendrick and Roddy Ricch, has been at the forefront of hip hop commercially. Alotta the same "politics" that derailed Death Row, unfortunately, has also carried over to this new generation, ie Nipsey Hussle and Drakeo The Ruler, two guys I thought had a real shot to blow outside of the region.
Death Row and Suge, ultimately, just didnt know when to "turn it off." I disagree with Gipp when he said every L.A. artist that signed shouldve distanced themselves from their neighborhoods, becuase if we're keeping it a buck, thats actually part of the allure in marketing these artists (see: The Game when Dre & 50 first put him out), or YG (Def Jam handed him to Jeezy for his debut album).
I think TDE, as far as L.A. hip hop, is the best example of who learned from Suge's mistakes. Unlike Suge, Top Dawg didnt have to pay to be from his hood, and was actually a real reputable in his section. TDE has just as many hoods around as Death Row, but you never heard any smut on its name. You'd never even know that TDE is a gsng affiliated label at first glance. Unlike Suge, played the background! And kept the streets seperated from the business.
Snoop said it best: TDE was what Death Row was supposed to be. I thought it was cool for Kendrick Lamar(Piru affiliate), Jay Rock(Bounty Hunters Bloods) and Schoolboy Q(Hoover Crips) to be labelmates of the same company with the CEO being from the Red Side(don't know his exact affiliation). Very reminiscent of Suge and DR's early days where artists from sides of the tracks were making money and good music together. Before PAC and Biggie were murdered to say the least. Cali artists with known gang affiliation like The Game(Cedar Block Piru) or YG(Tree Top Piru) saw an avenue to recreate the West Coast Hip Hop scene or Gangsta rap buzz that's been dominant in Hip Hop for decades. Although, the "set-trippin' was marketable to younger fans who weren't necessarily privy to LA gang culture or don't know the full history of it, which only added to the detriment of both Nipsey and Drako who became casualties of their violent environments. Ironically, now you got artists that are not even from LA(i.e., Chris Brown, Soulja Boy, Lil Wayne, Jim Jones) seeking to win accreditation by clicking up with certain Blood gangs. Looking for clout.
