It wasn't really the writing that got it cancelled it was the legal issue with rights between Netflix and free forms production companies. They where listening to the fans and had several times that they were going to do if they got a 4th series like Malec planing the wedding. Luke running the institute and Alec mum watching Clary through the book store.
Magnus is the best character in the show. Harry plays him perfectly. Plus, he's got Alec. What's not to like?
