for food, put candies in your pocket.
put names on your things. use paper and scotch tape. if you can engrave your name the better. I can not stress this enough. if for some reason a staff nurse asks to borrow one of your things remember the staff nurse especially for the expensive ones. If for some reason that the item was not returned, ask your CI. Staff nurses may forget to give it back.
if you have questions ask your CI. Avoid asking the staff nurse. They may give you a different answer. Trust me.
if your CI wants you to administer some medication especially thru IV, check the medication first. For example, potassium chloride. NEVER EVER administer this IV push. IF in doubt, pull out.
Invest in your duty shoes. The majority of the time you will be walking and running.
bring your own water.
Wallets and cellphone must stay in your pockets.
When being asked by the patient or relatives about their condition, never answer. Politely say that you will notify the staff nurse. For example, the patient asks if he or she can eat, notify the nurse on duty. Some patients are not allowed to eat because they may have an OR procedure or GI bleed.
If you did something wrong, notify your CI at once. No need to hide it.
