    I'm an American in Chicago on a US Army pension. I am retiring in the Philippines August September of 2019. I am not coming back. I don't like really hot weather so I am choosing Baguio City as my place of residency in the Philippines. I will leave my American bank account open and transfer funds as needed. I am single and I enjoy talking with college students so Baguio City makes a whole lot of sense. The weather is not too hot, the weather is not too cold. I will save on electricity because I won't need air con and I will save on heat because it never gets colder than 50 degrees usually even in the mountains. I have made this decision because I loved it when I lived in San Francisco and Baguio City reminds me of the San Francisco of the Philippines. Most Filipinos in the city speak English so this should not be a problem plus the money I save by living there will allow me to travel South on vacation to places like El Nido, Makati, Cebu City or wherever. I definitely will stay out of Mindanao though. Good luck to you sir on your retirement salamat po

      Philip Janek i live in bacolod, it can get really hot and humid but ac helps, i find english hardly spoken but i speak the local dialect and most filipinos speak or understand some english as it is the medium of instruction in the schools.

      I'm half Chinese Filipino married, my husband and I loves Arizona, it don't makes any difference expenses compared to Philippines.. We live in a very nice place, it's cold at night 65 degrees we are close to Flagstaff that gets snow.. We just had rains for 3 day's but almost everyday nice weather.. Lots from Chicago and California migrate here.

      That is where I will stay also. Baguio. I can just play golf everyday and not worrying about getting heat stroke. Can't wait to do it.

She wanted to come here to America but I'm thinking about living in the Philippines with her. I will do whatever makes her happy. We're thinking about starting a business together in the Philippines if we live there. I flew on May 18 via PAL. I had an antigen test same day of my flight. My flight was at 11:55 pm via SFO and had it done 10:30am. It took 20 min to get the results. I downloaded it to One health pass together with my vaccine card. I got the bar code good for boarding and later that night got an email with the QR code. I screenshot it on my phone. Upon arriving there is an express lane. You show it to the guy in uniform behind a desk with plastic shield and the QR code will be scanned. After that you go to immigration. There is a faster lane for seniors and people on wheelchair. The whole thing was less than 15 min. The QR code not the bat code will keep you moving faster for entry. In immigration the y stamp your passport and then collect your baggage. If you have connecting flights there are personnel on the ground to assist you.

    I am a retired too here in Toronto Ontario Canada I live here more years than I live in our country but I still considered Philippines is my home sweet home like Toronto, living in the Philippines is much cheaper but there’s something we have to consider since we are getting older when it comes to death we are end up there anyway but if we could prolong a bit then why not that is only difference for me, I am from Baguio city north of Manila I can not live in Manila too hot too humid over populated i can’t breath I love the city I grownups very nice and beautiful place to live in fresh fruits fresh vegetables lots of yummy food unfortunately I can’t live more than 6 months because my children and their family’s are here in the US and Toronto so i only go at winter time here then come back on summer time, I love our country and love Baguio nice breathtaking...❤️👍

    Hello Vlogger Granda, thanks for all the detailed info you are sharing, great we have someone like you! May God continue to give you long and healthy life!! I am 63 and considered retiring in the Phils. I live in a single detached home in Alabang. My kids are grown and are staying in US.with the recent pandemic, this prevented me from visiting my children. I am considering filing an early SS pension- it affirmed my intuition to do it after I watched your blog. I have everything I need and enjoys the quality of life here, more so, enjoyed fresh sea foods, fresh veggies and fruits which I find very inexpensive if we compare it in US. I dont worry much about my health as I am trying to live a healthy life. Jogging around the village every morning, siesta in the afternoon, enjoying the discount privilege of a Sr Cit. if not bec of the pandemic, I go to the movie theater 2x a week! God is good! If I live in the US right now,I will still be working and compete with millennials in a bank where I previously worked with or , I might end up working as a greeter at Walmart :-) thanks a lot for all the wisdom you are sharing! Mabuhay!!

I migrated from the Philippines to the U S when I was 26 years of age and worked as a financial analyst for 30 years and decided to retire early. My plan all along was to retire in the Philippines but in the last five years, I became hesitant to retire there. Your vlog might answer some of the questions holding me back to retire there. The information about traffic in Metro Manila is correct... it's very challenging
      However, healthcare in major metropolis in the Philippines is comparable to US medical centers. You might even be surprised that some of the medical professionals in some hospitals are US trained. Also, cost of medical charges in the Philippines is about 50% less than the USA.
      Here are some links to the top medical centers in Metro Manila:

    Many others still want to deposit in a US bank and transfer here, but you will have transfer fees.

      Banks make money by charging fees, or by manipulating exchange rate, or both. The bottom line is how much Philippine currency you receive for every dollar you pay out (including fees). Not sure what a home bank in the PH would charge (if anything prob cheaper than remittance services) but if your not living paycheck to paycheck I have also heard of guys writing a check from their US bank account and depositing it in their PH bank account when on site in the PH. I have not done this myself yet but we bank with East West and will be bank in country (PH) later this year and will try it. I’ve heard it takes up to 4 wks for the check to clear. Like I said you cannot be living by the skin of your teeth check to check if it takes that long but then again no one should be living check to check that’s too stressful lol.

We would like for our son to finish high school here and maybe, we are looking into putting him in a University in the Philippines. That's right. I have grandchildren who will be college bound (I hope) in 5 years or so. Perhaps they can take college in the Philippines because it's better. When I was in the Philippines, I was looking for applying for university admission to take my master's degree in the U.S. Our dean said why not take it in the Philippines because we have a better educational system. I did not believe him until I started teaching at a University in Pennsylvania. Then I realized that he is right. Our college system is better in the Philippines because we are spoon fed. So, that's another possibility for my grandchildren.

      Hi Danny, where you graduate from is actually a matter of prestige (& establishing connections) whether in the US or in the Philippines.
      I would surmise that had you taken your Masters from an Ivy League institution in the US and you went back to the Philippines, I have no doubt that you would have retired as a CEO, CFO or at a minimum a VP of a major corporation in PH (in the private sector).
      Proof: a majority of my college classmates/batchmates are now either CEO's, CFO's, VP's of major corporations in the Philippines. But of course, most them took their Masters either in the US or at prestigious PH institutions. And some, established their own business and became multi-millionaires (no doubt using their connections established during the college days).
      For your grandchildren's brighter future (if in case), an Ateneo, De La Salle or UP education will be my bet... for sure they will acquire an instant edge once they graduate.

    I'm an avid shooter. You can go to a gun range in the PI and rent one of their weapons to shoot. Not quite the same as the US but for those who feel like they need to stay sharp this is an option. Nice video, keep them coming... why not Tagaytay or Baguio as a retirement choice?

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I will definitely spend a lot of time in Baguio and Tagaytay. It's nice. The only reason I chose Manila (in spite of the congestion) is convenience to medical facilities (both me and my wife have issues) and the airport since we intend to commute back and forth to the U.S. If you have no medical issues and don't plan to commute frequently to the U.S., those two areas are definitely a better choice due to climate. :-)

      I believe field health is available to senior citizens for free. It's also available to learn citizens for a fee. But it is not expensive. I believe it is $400-$500 per year. However, I understand it has good benefits if you are willing to go to public facilities. I also understand that if you go to private hospital, benefits are not that great. There are many condos in the Philippines. The condominium I'm in is completely sold out. The question for you is were you want to go, then look for a condo in that area.

    Philippine citizens can own guns and there are shooting ranges. Don’t know what you could hunt though. You could declare dual citizenship and own a gun in both places. I have no idea what to do with my guns when I move to Cebu in 2020.

      I'm leaving mine (about 10 of them) on a safe with my daughter's family where I can use it when I'm in the U.S. Eventually, my son-in-law and my grandchildren will inherit them, anyway, if they're interested. They may not have the same passion as I do. I decided not to own a gun in the Philippines because it's not practical. I could get a license and permit to carry, but it's too burdensome and expensive compared to the U.S. It is also not as useful as in the U.S. because you have very limited use...like you can't carry them in the malls. 🙂

    Hello ,I have a question regarding my mother who is 82 years old. I think she is planning not to come back to the US ( US citizen for 25 + ) . As a US citizen she can stay or does she have to let the US embassy know? Her SS check will be sent to a bank & we will terminate her Medicare Part B eventually . Do you have any advise on her citizenship. Thanks again .

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      She should apply for dual citizenship to get the benefit of stimulus benefit and such. Once she is dual, she does not have to notify the US regarding departure to the Philippines. She will only pay tax in the Philippines on PI-source income. She will be subject to US taxes on worldwide income, but if her only income is from SS, no return will need to be filed. She can ask SS to forward her benefits to the Philippines. She can also terminate Medicare part B to get more social security instead of the premium (about $150) being deducted from her check.

    Hello, and thanks for a well thought out, and informative channel! May I ask if you have established dual citizenship?
    I was told, in the province at least, that a Philippine citizen can rather easily obtain a permit to own firearms, especially if you're involved in business of any sort. The local Polisya have even invited me, and my Uncle(an avid gun nut, who loads and reloads) to come shoot with them! We are both American born! I have yet to view your medical presentation, but I'm pretty sure that any Filipino can buy even the best Health plan Philhealth offers! I also have seen credible, overseas medical supplemental insurance at about $100.00 per month, including transport home.
    My wife and I have a house on Mindano, but I may end up in Cebu, if health concerns come up. From what I've seen, and heard, Cebu is every bit as advanced medically as Manila, and I prefer a more suburban/rural lifestyle personally.
    Also, my wife's first(of 6) languages is Cebuano, which would create another hurdle for a person such as yourself.
    I'm struggling with it(Cebuano), but it's worth it, in my case! English is more universally spoken on Luzon, and I plan on spending most of my time on Mindanao, and Cebu. Keep the videoa comming!

    • @vloggergrandpa2707
      @vloggergrandpa2707  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I have dual citizenship. I am an avid firearm holder and shooter as well. That's my only hobby. I have several pistols, shotguns, and rifles (no AR15 though). I own progressive reloader equipment to reload 30-06, 12 gauge, 9mm and 380mm cartridges. Hunting and target shooting is my only hobby. Unfortunately, I will leave this behind in the U.S. and will play with it only when I'm in the U.S. I have a Carry Permit License in Pennsylvania and Washington. I was planning to carry a pistol in the Philippines. However, I'm having second thoughts about that. Philippines will not allow you to carry in many places including malls, and I will not want to leave a pistol in the car. I can get a pistol with no problem. Also, owning a gun in the Philippines is expensive. You need a license to own one in your house (not in the U.S.); you also need a license for each gun you own or carry (not in the U.S. because here they license the person, not the gun); license is expensive and only good for one year (here it's okay to own and keep in the house with no license and license to carry is cheap and it's good for 5 years); and you need a permit for each day you carry your gun to the range (here you carry it any time with no license required). Big, big difference. Let me know if you find out otherwise. I will be interested, not for target shooting, but for protection. I will only want one pistol in the Philippines, if I decide to get it at all. I think it's hard to get in Manila, but I can get it.

    Better to live in the Visayas than living in Manila or in Luzon, because the highway is very congested too much traffic and driving your car needs different plate numbers. Unlike other provinces is more relaxed . I really avoid arriving Manila NAIA it’s because its too much traffic i like to arrive Cebu and fly to Bacolod or to Iloilo. Who really wanted to retire in Manila or part of Luzon with too much pollution and traffic and you will pass the highway that looks like a parking lot like EDSA during the day whereas living in the Visayas or part of Mindanao is much better , in the Visayas and Mindanao have fresh air , low standard of living.

    Hi Danny, for the info of your viewers... internet is available on most populated areas in the Philippines..... some areas have better speed (5mbps download) & some areas very slow (1mbps download). VOIP (voice over internet protocol)... is an internet base voice calling like FB messenger, Viber, whatsapp, skype, Magic Jack etc... However, there is a little known way of calling all telephone numbers in the US & Canada for FREE (except the cost of internet of course). Before moving to the Philippines, you must download to your device/s (cellphone, Ipad, laptop) any or all these applications : Talkatone- www.talkatone.com/ (you must bear the ads) or Magic Jack- www.magicjack.com/magicApp.html for $10 a year subscription, they will provide you your own chosen telephone number without ads

      Yes, I have MagicJack already activated. I just hope the internet in Manila is good. I thought Duterte was working on that. I thought he was threatening the service providers to improve their speed, or he will let foreign providers come to the Philippines to compete with them. Here in the U.S. we are are getting up to 100 mbps and they're still trying to speed that up. Can you imagine the difference?

Access to faster internet speed in PH is anticipated to commence sometime in 2020.

Just google it and you should have no problem getting your so-called certification of birth. Then just explain to the Philippine consulate that you had a fire and lost your old passport. Other than the pandemic restriction, if any, there are no restrictions. Just bring your US and Philippine Passports. If you don't have Philippine Passport, bring your dual citizenship papers to show that you are a dual citizen, although I will always recommend to everyone to have a Philippine Passport. Be careful, the last I heard, you will be required to do COVID-19 testing when you arrive in the Philippines and you may be quarantined until the test results are done which takes 3 to 7 days. During that time, you may be required to stay in a specified hotel and you will have to pay for that. I don't know if that requirement has been lifted yet.
