Ever since I first learned about the okapi while playing zoo tycoon, they've held a special place in my heart. What do you think of these mammals? We have another cool video about the okapi's relative, the giraffe. Okapis and Giraffes are each other's closest relatives. Both also fall under the artiodactyl category. Their next closest relatives are pronghorn antelope.
@@AnimalFactFiles Me too! I'm a new subscriber and I'll be watching numerous videos you have posted. I love animals and wildlife and reptiles and on and on... thank you!
Wait ..... do Servals even live in dense forested areas? I'd say the only threat to Leopards because Servals and African Golden Cats are tiny and wouldn't really pose a threat to Animals as big as Okapis.
Actually, the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) is classified in its own family (Antilocapridae), which belongs to a broader superfamily known as Giraffoidea, which is the most basal living taxon of pecorans.
I'm also quite surprised anyone thought they were closely related to horses and zebra's since they are a two toed ungulate 🤔 maybe this was before any had been observed by scientists?
Certain tribes hunt these things and the skin around the hind quarters are never the same, the tribesman wears the tanned skins and sometimes the kill is a rite of passage for the young males.

They have such a keen sense of fashion, I don't see why they're so shy.
Unfortunately it's because they have so many predators and poachers. They've evolved to be solitary and cautious.
@@fighterck6241 jealousy is an ugly affair
@@fighterck6241 the poaching is a shame, predation on the other hand really can't be bad.
so this is the titan who kidnap Armin
Real
This is so interesting. A few years ago we were at a zoo and I asked what giraffes were related to and no one had an answer lol
Love these pretty little creatures
Glad you found an answer here!
@@AnimalFactFiles yes thank you so much!!!!

It's hard to imagine a small little serval taking out an okapi. I'm used to thinking of servals as rodent killers.
Servals go after young okapi!
Mikasa: "What the hell's an okapi?!"
Giraffe: Who do you think you are? Okapi: Your cousin of course.
They are so beautiful!! I've never heard of these animals before watching this video. Thank you!!!
So glad you learned something new here!

There's a kids story that says a 🦒, a 🦓 and a 🐴 raised a mystery animal who turned out to be an okapi!
I didn't realize they were so large. To me they are so pretty
Pretty cool animal. I didn't even know they existed before your video. So, thanks for the introduction!
That's so cool you learned something new! Glad you enjoyed it!!

Can they be domesticated ?

The pronghorn is a tentative member of that family tree, actually.

@@indyreno2933 Thank you for clarification.
The pronghorn is a relative of the giraffe.
3:44 Look how beautiful and shiny their coats are. They’re such a gorgeous and unique looking animal.
And they have two toes/split hooves
Sogga soft cat can take down an Okapi? Jeez
And they have a hand on their tongue
Pronghorned deer are actually also related to both the okapi and giraffe as they are it's closest living relatives
I'm also quite surprised anyone thought they were closely related to horses and zebra's since they are a two toed ungulate 🤔 maybe this was before any had been observed by scientists?
