The DeLorean car was made famous thanks to the Back To The Future movies, but the real company that made DeLoreans went bankrupt within just a couple of years of starting. So what happened? The crazy story of the DeLorean Motor Company involves a war, FBI agents, and a million dollar coke deal gone wrong. It’s a business story with a meteoric rise to the top and a disastrous fall to the bottom, with lots of wealth, fame, and drama along the way. Plus, a very eccentric CEO. But in true DeLorean style, to make sense of all this, we need to travel back in time... and so The DeLorean story begins with the birth of John DeLorean, in a place home to 'the big 3' (the biggest car manufacturers of the time). In this DeLorean documentary, we'll go on a journey through John DeLorean's crazy life, his rise and fall in the business world / car industry, and what the future holds for the DeLorean business.

I remember when I first saw a DeLorean as a teenager, hidden in a parking garage. It was a few decades old by then, but looked like it just rolled out of the assembly line. Epic design.
Feel bad that John didn't get make the DeLorean a Big Name Car Company, but at least he knew the car would remain iconic through the Back to the Future Films.
Back To The Future really eternalized the DeLorean
that’s crazy. somebody in the car industry called in a favor and had the fbi hand pick somebody he trusted and set him up to take him down. there was never any cocaine and the entire thing was fake, how do you go to jail for that if a crime never actually happened, just shows u what powerful people can get people in government police agencies to do if they don’t like them.
I mean, quite possibly... BOTH daddy Bush and Dubya, as well as "the last guy" all used the FBI to spy on gay rights and black rights groups as a "threat to national security" ...but then again, it's not like John Delorean was mishandling/hoarding national security secrets and lying to the FBI... or being on the HOMELAND SECURITY counsel going on national TV and EXPOSING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION...or REPEATEDLY COMMITTING PERJURY (on taxes, and and lying about being a drug addict to buy a gun) AT THE END OF THE DAY... FBI didn't need to "entrap" those three nitwits >.>
The man deserved better. Would have bought a delorian myself during those times!

Thank you for telling this story, I had heard of Delorean and Northern Ireland but I never knew the background of why and the creator of the business!
We were little when DeLorean came out in 1981. I remember it being in the Back to the Future movie.
We were a bit little to recall the car company was on trial for a drug deal. My sister and I were shocked to learn this today.

Never thought Delorean’s Coke deal was a matter of getting quick cash for the company. I just always thought he was a drug addict in the game.

@@billh.1940 I've heard it both ways... that he just needed the cash for the company... and that it was a setup from GM to kick him while he was down and prevent him from getting back up (because they knew if he DID get back up, he'd pull a SPIDERMAN and emerge the hero of the city)
...when I was a little girl, I'd have been certain of the "bailout" story... but knowing how *EVIL* corporate America *CAN BE* these days, I'm not so sure that he wasn't set up...

Hudson was going under, and John used this to leverage himself into a chief engineering position. This brought about the first production automatic transmission.
I believe 2nd place offering, for goverment funding, was in Vermont.
John was looking at a rotary engine, but since it wasnt Mazda production, fell through and the PRV engine was the runner up.
The FBI informant was looked at as a ruthless drug dealer. The day before he took off to the drug deal, he sent a letter to his personal lawyer. Saying he worried for his safety as well as his family.

The east was the Protestant/Unionist majority, while the west was predominantly Catholic/Nationalist. In fact, the only places with a strong Protestant majority were North Down and Antrim.

Yeah, I'll say. Personally, I'd call "the petrol tank explodes if hit at the wrong angle" more of an "oh fuck, we shouldn't have done this" than a problem but hey. I'm not American, not am I a soulless conglomerate.
I wish you would have included something in the Title saying this was a documentary about Delorean. With the title and thumbnail it made me believe I was going to watch something about a guy who watched BttF and built a time machine and somehow caught in trouble with the police. I'm really let down and disappointed. I feel baited.
