I'm in Canada..... retired from the railway (CP Rail). Pretty well anywhere in North America if there's a train track you know a road (often a unpaved road) is close by because the railway requires access to the tracks by road in case of a derailment. I've seen trains 2 1/2 miles long during my days working on the railway..... my last 13 years were at a major intermodal terminal in southern Ontario just dealing with thousands of truck drivers & intermodal containers. Train crews have a boring job on the road so seeing a pretty girl on a motorcycle made their day (if they only knew it was the world famous Noraly from the Netherlands lol).
Very cool! You pull on to a paved road that just happens to be Route 66, into a gas station right behind a 1961 Corvette! You're probably too young to remember an American TV show called "Route 66" starring Martin Milner and George Maharis where they traveled that road in a Corvette but, this old guy remembers! 😀 Hi from North Carolina!
I also got it to be a -61 Corvette. Such a nice car! Only ever seen a red and white one before with all interior leather being intensely red, but this one was in mint condition!

Noraly,if there is not a barricade or construction equipment right at or within sight of the posted road closed sign the road is probably closed further down, possibly miles especially in an mostly uninhabited area such as that and the sign was posted there at that intersection so drivers can choose a different route at that point instead of driving down that road and having to turn around to go back but if you go down it it may not be closed before you get to where you wanted to go.And if an authority figure is down there or arrives after you they will just ask you to turn around and leave.

My sister went out west (Grand Canyon) and had to book months in advance. She signed up for some sort of donkey ride down into the canyon, spent the night, and rode back out the next day. That is kind of special but some places you just can't ride up to and expect to find a room. Then there are the 'tourist traps' where $200/night is cheap.
@@tkc8873 To this day I'm not sure how we did it. Back in 15 my wife and I spent a month driving the West for our honeymoon and we never made plans more than a day ahead. Somehow we managed to always find a place to stay at a not horrible rate, and that was the height of the summer travel season. Even in Yellowstone we found a spot to camp at the 1st place we pulled into. It seemed like every place we called as we drove just had had a last minute cancellation.

A little “train bonding” goes a long way when riding alone in the desert sun and loved the spaghetti western sound track… which prompted some whistling, ooh aahs with visions of riding Alaska in a poncho and cowboy hat chewing a cheroot, Eastwood and Van Cleef style.
The video of you travelling along side of the train was just amazing. The editing was also fantastic, music also great. Well done Noraly. Big 👍 from me.
I grew up in eastern OhIo where everything is green and the hills are covered with trees. I had a motorcycle. A long ride for me as 120 miles to my mother's house. After I moved to California, some friends asked me to meet them outside of Las Vegas for a week of riding in the desert. In watching your video, I relived my experience of riding for the first time in the enormity of a wide open desert and gulping up scenery that was always changing and never ending. I know the joy you are feeling. You may not yet be aware of this, but you have had a taste of an even bigger joy that you will that you will come to know, and that is this: you count absolutely count on the kindness of strangers. Broken chains, severed clutch cables, flat tires, empty gas tanks, or utter exhaustion and no place to stay-someone will be there to pick you up. Happy trials, Noraly.
This ladys personality has gripped me, and now im binging. Her laugh is so infectious. Thank you Noraly. Your channel is great, you are a brave person to go it alone, kudos to you 👏
Exactly what I was thinking! Raised 3 children with model trains running around and family in Tucson so seeing the train tracks was always a big thing.
Noraly, this is a typical kids thing and I loved it! We used to wave and use the pull down gesture to get the engineer to honk at us. We did it with semi trucks too. Looks like you're having a blast. There is a lot to see and do out west. Enjoy it.
Noraly made a 1000 ton friend! 🤗 That car at the fuel station most likely was a 1959 Chevrolet Corvette. A very nicely restored one as well! 💪 Gorgeous pictures of a gorgeous landscape, cinematic quality of the pictures! This is just fantastic stuff! 🤯😍
It's wonderful to see someone else fascinated with trains. When the first continental railway was built it changed America forever. Trains made it possible for goods and people to be transferred easily across the Nation. Before the train, many perished during their trek out West. You really captured how epic it feels riding alongside a train in the wide open spaces. I feel very blessed to be able to do that anytime I please. It looks like you and the conductor had a good ol' time out there!
Wow, that made me even a bit emotional, and a big grin, where you rode with that train and he waved and honked, you made a human connection and that was so sweet and warming to watch. Great vlog! Wish you well
I wonder how many of us googled California shoe memorial while watching this episode 🤔. Noraly, we learn so much about the world watching your travels. Thanks for sharing 👍
I got a chuckle out of her not wanting to eat at a chain and she goes to a Dennys. 😂 There are some great mom and pop diners here in the US. I’m sure she’ll final a few before she heads into Canuckia.
I’m so glad you are enjoying your journey here in the states. I bet the train engineer would have never guessed that was a cute Dutch girl riding to Alaska! 😉
Been following for a couple of years and this one was the most touching. Train engineers normally don't wave and honk their horns like they did to you, very special. Love the geology talks and you do too, so if not planned yet, the Grand Canyon is a must, Geologists paradise, there is a small museum. Then to continue on your geological quest go east, not too far, to the Petrified Forest, awesome, huge trees laying on the ground but solid rock. and between it and the Grand Canyon is a tall single volcano that erupted eons ago and has a crusty, black, huge lava flow river, amazing spectacle. Since Amboy Crater was closed, this can make up for it, much more amazing than Amboy Crater. The whole south west is a geologists wonderland. Too many fast foods here and like Denny's not so good. The only way to find some good eating is if some local person recommends a local place. Always looking for the next adventure. May God continue to Bless and keep you safe.
I really love the architecture along the rim of the canyon, too. Hermit's Rest is particularly cool. Designed by Mary Colter and built in 1914. If you kind of look past its contents (typical rest stop store) at what was actually built there it is really striking.
@@yt45204 well done, you worked out the metaphor! Petrified means "turned to stone". This is indeed what happens if you get scared LOL But trees don't get scared easy, they told me. They've been there and died, they just wait and wait and under certain circumstances time will turn them to stone. I have a hunch Noraly will touch on that subject, would be right in her alley .
Ginkgo Petrfied Forest near Vantage Washington is a possible competition site to visit, and it is part of the Ice age floods and flood basalts Eastern Washington and the Hell's Canyon is deeper than Grand Canyon... it will be curious what path she follows and what she can visit with all the possibilities.
I loved this episode and you are charming the boots of the Americans you are meeting along the way. It's amazingly refreshing that you are so positive even when faced with obstacles and are willing to be flexible to enjoy what other routes may have to offer in this case the sand dunes and lava tubes. How romantic, riding along with and interacting with a freight train! You've already given us a true sense of the scale of this country with its huge open roads, huge trains and huge breakfasts!😃
The railroad you were travelling alongside was the BNSF transcontinental railroad linking Chicago to Los Angeles. The double stack container trains can at times be up to two miles in length with locos front, middle and back. You will find on many routes you will encounter lots of roads that parallel the tracks. The crews love a good race!
My wife and I rode alongside a similar train a bit further east while heading to Joshua Tree a couple months back. At one point we had to wait for it at a crossing, which ended up being about an 8 minute stretch/rehydrate/snack break.
For those that may be wondering, BNSF stands for Burlington Northern Santa Fe. The area Noraly was traveling through is part of the area originally served by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) which merged with the Burlington Northern some years ago (1995-1996). Cheers!
I love seeing my own country through your eyes...so refreshing and fun! We just returned from a vacation to Texas and I remarked to my husband that franchises have taken over and every city looks the same these days. Hard to find those wonderful mom and pop eateries where the food and ambiance are so much better. After your Alaska adventure (which I am loving), please consider a tour of the USA. It is expensive (as you have discovered, no doubt), so put me on a list of friends who would be thrilled to give you a safe and comfy place to sleep and a good home-cooked meal should you ever decide to roll through the Hoosier Heartland (Indiana). Thanks for another great video! Happy Journey!

From one solo rider to another, a little motorcycle life hack, after getting stuck “backing out” my 600+ lbs adventure bike many times attempting to squeeze under downed trees etc in back country. I started to carry a string with a tiny weight the height of my bikes wind screen. Can walk up to the low point and measure if there’s enough clearance:) Love watching you traveling Noraly! Thanks for all the fun:)
Great for you. Being a former long haul driver in my past I always had a rope with me to measure from the bottom of any bridge to the road surface so I could compare it to my loaded truck. In her case she could carry a little tiny rope with her or a ball of string. When she has bike dumps and I listen to her pain I wish I could throw a ball of string through my monitor. lol But in reality any stick would have worked for her too.
I'm an American and I've spent years traveling this country for my former job as a cell tower inspector. I can not tell you how wonderful it is to watch your genuine first time reactions to the desert area of SoCal. I've spent a lot of time in that area and other parts of the surrounding south west. @@davidcadman4468 I suspect she will cross in Montana. I thought it was cool how she uncovered and waited for the train, then later when she waved bye and they sounded the whistle. Wonder if the train engineer knew that he had a rare encounter with the World Famous Noraly!
@@davidcadman4468 I'm guessing wherever it is, it'll be a small border crossing. I was on the Alaska Highway in 1990, and then in 2019. I just found your channel and have been binge watching your adventures :) Last summer I bought a [used] f700gs (because my local Honda dealership wasn't able to get me 300l Rally or a 450l) and solo rode it from my home in Alaska to Arizona. Well I actually only made it as far as southern Utah before I had a little whoopsie and broke my leg riding out in the desert. Like you, I hadn't made any reservations for accommodations before hand, as I wanted to remain as flexible as possible, and also learned how ridiculously expensive "walk-in" reservations as hotels were. Glad I had a tent and sleeping bag with me. I'm going to retrieve my bike from my parent's place in Arizona this spring and ride it back home to Alaska. This video series gave me a lot of ideas of place I want to see on my way back north. Love your stuff. Hope 2024 brings you may more great adventures :)

The rubber snorkel on the gas pumps are a California EPA required vapor capture system. It is intended to seal the gas filler and collect the vapors. Obviously it's a pain for motorcycles and filling portable gas tanks. Most other states don't have them.

Maybe he did know, that we won’t know! So cool though wasn’t it..
@Cancel Culture Interesting ! Noraly the Motorcycle Mermaid >>>🙃

The train scene was just beautiful. Thank you. ❤

I have never seen anyone so happy and with spark in the eyes while looking at rocks look you Noraly. Truly the National Geographic on two wheels, you're awesome! 👍👍

Almost everything goes wrong, gas cost a fortune, hotels are hard to find as are the railway crossings, the volcano was inaccessible. So smile and say you had a great day riding. Noraly, you are a joy. If only more people made the best of what they are dealt vs complaining about the bad, the world would be a much better place.

Exactly my thoughts .. in iconic western setting .. Dutchwoman on a Japanese horse
I get such joy seeing Noraly's face light up when she talks about geology. She chose the right field of study for herself!
Your enthusiasm as a geologist and explanations of what we are seeing makes the video a wonderful pleasure to watch.
This ladys personality has gripped me, and now im binging. Her laugh is so infectious.
Thank you Noraly. Your channel is great, you are a brave person to go it alone, kudos to you 👏
Noraly living every kids' dream. Riding next to a train and making friends with the loco pilot.
Enjoy it.

Could you identify which line that was? I didn't hear mention of any towns. I presume it's the old Santa Fe line through Needles to Albuquerque??

@@giles-df9yu Through Needles? Not quite sure from ordinary Atlas what's old ATSF and what might be old SP. Or who has trackrights over what.

It would be a shame to be so close to all that and pass it by.
This is indeed what happens if you get scared LOL
But trees don't get scared easy, they told me. They've been there and died, they just wait and wait and under certain circumstances time will turn them to stone. I have a hunch Noraly will touch on that subject, would be right in her alley .
The petrified forest isn't too far from the meteor crater.
So cool!
From one solo rider to another, a little motorcycle life hack, after getting stuck “backing out” my 600+ lbs adventure bike many times attempting to squeeze under downed trees etc in back country. I started to carry a string with a tiny weight the height of my bikes wind screen. Can walk up to the low point and measure if there’s enough clearance:)
Love watching you traveling Noraly!
A good rule of thumb for breakfast is a small place with lots of pickup trucks.. Works for me!!
I'm an American and I've spent years traveling this country for my former job as a cell tower inspector.
