    You aren't cheap. That makes me sad that people pass such judgement. What a tremendous lesson you are teaching your children that love and joy aren't tied to an overwhelming abundance. I wish we had scaled back when our kids were young. Your kids know you value time together and they get from other family members as well. Merry Christmas to all of you!

      One year they got a card game and the gifts from others were going to be pitched a few weeks after Christmas. Maybe some of us misunderstood how it got explained? This year I think they did great on the gifts for the kids. Our son has wanted this for a long time and here it is and he will like this. 👍🏻 It is not the number of gifts or the price of the gifts. Some families don’t every bring anything into the house except at Christmas to teach the kids delayed gratification. Some kids get the book when the book fair comes around and the equipment for the activity they are signed up in when that takes place and the water bottle and ear buds when school starts and some parents don’t do that but put it all at Christmas. They don’t want the gimmies all year round so train their kids not to expect items coming into the house except bday and Christmas. We also all thought everything they had had to fit in that 9 cubed ikea thing, 2 stuffed animals each, 14 books in total and a small bin of legos under the coffee table. But after seeing the bedrooms during those remodels and seeing the kids can have a keyboard, there is a space for toy vehicles under the loft bed it seems less ‘weird’ as they like to say. I think they did too good a job of hiding all the clutter so that us viewers could not see there were any items for the kids.

      I agree. My oldest is seven and she’ll get three or four gifts from us, things that she’s wanted for a long time. Then she’ll get probably 5-6 gifts from family members, who all ask us on beforehand what she wants. That means she’ll get 8-10 curated gifts that’ll all be her new favourite things. Even that many would be a bit overwhelming at once to be honest, but she won’t have it all at one time. She’ll meet family over a few days.
      Youngest is only three months and she’ll get four gifts this Christmas, which is a lot considering, but it’s all stuff we would’ve gotten her anyway 😊

    Here's how we approached Christmas with our kids... Since Jesus got 3 gifts, each of the kids got 3 gifts. One for the mind, one for the body, and one for the spirit. It was easy to adjust for the years when the income was low.
    Also, Christmas was strictly for the kids. We would take advantage of the after Christmas sales and exchange gifts at Valentine's instead. Very simplified and quite a bit less stressful!

    • @DRenee-fl3dw
      @DRenee-fl3dw 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Virginia, I love this idea. I proposed it to my husband when we first had kids and sadly he wasn't on board. We have four children. During the lean years, that would have been a tremendous help and now that they are older and all of their gifts are very pricey, having only 3 each would be a financial relief. I love that he enjoys giving but I love the simplicity you described. Body, mind, soul. Well done!

    • @marinard6293
      @marinard6293 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      What's even simpler is: each kid gets one Christmas present from parents. Not one from mom and one from dad, but parents talk about what to give to each child and together they buy one gift. It was like this in my childhood and we were happy. It's like this with our kids and they're happy too.

    If someon orders the book late just print off the photo of the cover and out it in a card, saying this will be delivered to you in the new year! Then they get the gift "twice", and it's often calmer after the business if Christmas.

    Regarding gift giving for your children: my daughter has given her kids three gifts every year now for several years and it’s been a win/win. They get a want, a need and a surprise. Surprises can be anything, big or small, depending on your budget. She’s a teacher and a single parent, so you know she doesn’t have a lot of money. One year she saved up to surprise them with a trip to Disneyland. Other years it has been much smaller but still surprising.

    • @Nan-59

      My daughter teaches middle school Special Ed and the past 2 years have nearly broken her. Not so much the kids, but they are still expected to test the kids and evaluate the teachers in these trying times.
      And right now she's home sick with Covid (so many and the school has it teachers and kids alike). and yet still has to do lesson plans every day even though she can hardly even sit up!!

It was surprising how fast I cleaned out a few closets in my house. My son had so many things in his closet that didn’t fit anymore but I just kept putting it off. What an awesome Christmas you are going to have! Thanks for the great ideas you have given us. Last week, on Dec 7, my niece, her husband and 7 year old daughter experienced a horrendous fire and lost everything except the clothes they were wearing and my grandniece’s dog. Last night, she was reading “The Grinch” and became very thoughtful and said, “The Grinch came and took all the presents and the people were still happy?” Her mom said yes, and she said, “The fire took everything from us and we’re still happy because we’re together.” Yes, they have taught that sweet girl what’s really important. I cried when my sister told me this story. She has learned at 7 what everyone needs to know...God is good through even the worst that happens. Thank you so much for the joy you and Tom and Diana bring to us each week. The dance was fantastic and your children were joyful and precious! Your friend in SC, Jane❤️🙏🏻

    About the O’Keefes Working Hands; it’s not slimy at all. My husband worked as a cabinetmaker for years and his fingers would crack in the winter because the sawdust plus the Wisconsin cold sucks the moisture out.
    He swears by that stuff. I call it his “Man Hands”
    Also for Tom, regarding toilets, a job my husband was on involved completely redoing the kitchen and lower level bathroom, which was the only bathroom they used. The toilet had to come out every morning and get put back every evening. For two weeks. 10 wax rings 🤣

That is until this year. All my children and other family members who are adults and have everything they would want. I would rather do experiences. But, couldn't find anything close by. So, it's gift cards for everybody. For once I stayed within my budget.

    I think getting your kids one gift each is a fantastic idea. It helps them appreciate what they get and like you guys said they are going to get more gifts from other people. There is no point in getting a bunch of gifts for the kids when they are only really going to play with them a handful of times any ways. I like that you guys got them things they could do and things to keep them occupied.

    My Hubs and I stopped buying each other Xmas gifts a few years ago. Our gifts are time together and being with grands who are out of state. At our age we buy what we need/want and don't need gifts to show our love.

    My hubby is an aircraft mechanic by trade and I always seek to buy him tools for Christmas. When I heard Tom say 10mm sockets are a great gift I thought, challenge accepted. I bought 3 and put in his stocking. He loved them and totally agreed with Tom. Not only that, when he said to our military son that he got sockets and to guess what size, our son said 10mm. Hahahahaha. I also got him a flashlight (standard stocking gift here) and the carhart shirt. All were great hits. Thanks for wonderful ideas and all your videos. I get excited every time I see a new one is posted. We love you guys, thanks for all you do. I'm looking forward to the workbook too.

    My son-in-law's birthday is right before Christmas. Last year, I gave him a certificate for a 'Dessert of the Month'. He was SO excited!! He immediately started a spread sheet for his monthly treats. I've heard him say several times how that is THE BEST gift he's ever gotten! His birthday is next week...and YES, he's getting another certificate. I'd much rather give a gift of love, like the desserts, than something I've purchased 'just to give a gift'.

    I have tiles on my keys, dog collars, in my purse etc. You can stick them to remote controls etc. You can press any one of them and the phone rings. So you don't need to know where you phone is 😁

    I think time is the most important gift you can give your family. Most family members can buy things they want. No returns or things that go on a closet shelf and forgot about. We are in our late seventies, a meal sounds nice to me.

    The nice thing about tiles is if you have something with the tile on it you can double tap the button and it will make your phone ring ( if your phones Bluetooth is on). I did just hear that they may be getting bought out by a company that is notorious for selling your data though...

      That’s so sweet and kinda funny. Every year I look forward to what a particular person will be getting everyone. I look forward to it because she gets either REALLY random things (like a toy fishing pole) or super expensive things (like a very nice fountain pen). Basically, whatever she gets you, it’s 100% from her heart and she truly thinks it’ll make you smile. I love those gifts.

    Everyone needs to do what is right for their family and their situation. We practice minimalism about 360 days a year. I do go a bit over board at Christmas with my immediate family. (Birthdays & vacations are the other times). Gift giving is one of my love languages and it’s ok. Christmas is a joyous time. Do what gives you joy. Yet, if you choose to give your children one gift or three or four, that’s fine too. No explanations needed. We all get to decide what works for our families.

    Great video! I’ve started to declutter some before Christmas too! We have a family of 7 and have had the reminder of the stress living in a cluttered house is like this past week… we were supposed to get new carpet in all three bedrooms on Monday so we had to empty all bedrooms. They canceled on us and rescheduled for Saturday. So we’ve been living surrounded by dismantled bunk beds, dressers, and toy boxes in our living area! I can’t wait to get my house back in order!

    I absolutely love all your gift ideas! It is a great joy to watch you guys… You mentioned minute to win it games in a couple of your older videos and we are getting geared up to implement lots of family fun this year rather than excessive amount of gifts. Kids don’t even need any more random stuff just because it’s pretty & will never remember they got it. What they will remember though is home full of love, laughter and fun. Quality family time just like in your home guys. I definitely learnt a lot different things about parenting from you Dawn… and just finished 30 day decluttering challenge with my friends- also thanks to you!💗💗💗
