"BROKEN" Better smashed than possessed! Animated Short by Patrick Smith.

- It is better to be broken than be possessed by evil.
In this animated short film, a dystopian environment contains brittle glass characters, they are divided into two sides: the broken and the intact. The spirits that dwell within are either pure or rotten. The broken remain on their side, to waste away into shattered bits. But the shards have a healing property, a process exploited by an ambitious dark soul who desires to be whole, and part of a possessed, twisted, robotic tribe. "Broken" is a cautionary tale, it expresses the idea that it is better to be broken and pure, than be intact and possessed. Once tripped, smashed, and deprived of his glass body, the dark soul timidly rises, twisting upward, but is soon ripped down violently, and consumed mercilessly by the unbroken. "BROKEN" we go beyond the broken wine glass trope, the world in which these glass people dwell has evolved. The wine cups from previous stories have been replaced by characters with spherical heads, just as brittle as before. They shatter easily when struck, but also they are pliable and stretch and move.
Directors note:
For some reason this film evolved the way it did.. a bit creepy and twisted, but meaningful nonetheless. In many ways this animation reflects my belief that evil is often found in what we perceive as beauty or perfection, and conversely, goodness is found in what we dismiss as "broken" or unworthy. It's interesting to note that many Catholic Saints were broken or misled prior to conversion. Regardless of the meaning that viewers glean from this animation, I truly hope you enjoy it, and please share as much as possible. I'm hoping that this piece will resonate as a meaningful animated short film.

I seriously used to believe the white bird is the protagonist of the show. I even cried out so hard when it almost got killed. But the best thing is the bird is actually the best side by presenting the true reason of being “alive”.

One thing I really love about Patrick's work is that there's never really a "right" interpretation. He just makes these weird little artist animations that make you stop and think, and maybe consider things about yourself and others that you hadn't acknowledged before.
With regards to this one, I personally see this as a warning about shallowness and conformity. It's better to stay true to your own identity, even if you are what others consider to be a "broken" or "failed" individual, rather than turn into a twisted parody of yourself trying to fit in with what's "accepted". Because in the end, all those who blindly conform develop the same self-centered mindset, and will not hesitate to tear your right back down again for their own gratification.

@@PatrickSmithAnimation The way it evolved is amazing the new universe in this film is diffrent then the previous episodes my understanding is thwt all the coruputed ones succsefly killed other brokens and reparied themselfs but because they did such evil they were cursed and possed so i think beacause of the robtic ticking when there mouth moves some larger enity is controling them it was aways trying to posses them but once they did evil then the evil force could possses them after it posses them they are cursed forever the momnet they kill another its a cursed life for them and when they die there soul is mangled and destoryed however there soul is still alive but when the corrupted soul got caught and eatan then it truly died because its soul was destoryed so for the other ghost its not really dead its just seprated from its pysical form so maybe it could go back into another body and maybe find a way to repair itself without gettting possed i think the bird maybe be a guardian angel and not just a bird because it has special powers for example at the start when a corrupted ate it it was able to just get out easily so it has special powers and at the end it tells the other ghost to follow it its trying to guide them. this is my intrreption when this contuines i can make more theorys on it ive read your interpitation to and one of the things i like about this series is that it is not set to one set of lore multiple theroys work your intrapetion works and i have read other peoples interiptations they all work and fit well with the story that is one of the things i like about this series. also thanks for replying to my comment!

Very beautiful animation. I especially like the fluid physics in the animation, how detailed it is. At 1:07 there is liquid moving in his hand, a cool detail. Good animation, nice to watch. Looks dynamic.

It’s quite disheartening that the left glass, which is fragmented and sorrowful, not only disregards the assistance offered by the right glass in repairing its broken pieces but also chooses to belittle the right glass's efforts, ultimately leaving it as a mere ghost of its former self, shattered and desolate.
In my opinion, the left glass made an unwise decision by not appreciating the right glass's intentions.

The intact are named "Happy Smiles" and the broken are named "Broken Frowns" and for the dude at 1:12 is named "Saddened Upside-down Smile" (before he became a Happy Smile) and "Fixed Smile" (after he became a Happy Smile) (he's the only one I'll be giving a name) (Fun fact while I was typing this: Saddened Upside-down Smile was originally called Saddening Upside-down Smile, though I decided to change it to Saddened Upside-down Smile.) Also yes I'm horrible/terrible at naming. Also the music here is pretty catchy. I sometimes hum the catchy parts.

Can't wait for what's next :) might actually make a fan-made POUR episode based on what would happen if these glass guys with the orb heads meet the ones that don't have orb heads (aka the main glass guys in most of the POUR videos like Pour 585) also imagine seeing the Happy Smiles just standing outside your house. Silently smiling. At your house. And no one is around. Just you. And them. And someone you trust like a pet, friend, family member, whoever it is, is the only one with you. And you can't do anything about it. Because if you step out your house, some will slowly walk to you and try to eat you (like how some of the Happy Smiles ate the darkish grey/gray ghost aka the ghost of Saddened Upside-down Smile) and the said someone you trust is either getting eaten also or just watching you die fearfully. Worse if it's night. Imagine seeing glowing eyes at night. And they have colors. Ok why did I make such simple characters become so creepy.

This feels like something released in 2012
I've read the description, but I feel like this is a metaphor for how cults work; they look for broken and lost individuals whom that they can indoctrinate into their mindset, fundamentally changing who they are. The broken glasses all show some form of individuality, some sense of awareness, and can even act on their own accord. While all the intact glasses are more organized, but all look and act the same. With the exception of the one with a crack on its body (an imperfection in the process of being "intact" that still allows it some self awareness (enough to notice a new comer). That's why they ultimately eat the dark soul; because to join a cult, is to give everything to them, including your soul (metaphorically, and in this case, literally).

I like how it subverts our expectation. Like I thought the smiley people would be the friendly and helpful ones, but they are the most dangerous ones. I’d much rather be in frown town than with those smiley guys.

I'm normally not into stuff of this kind but holy crap this one did hit me in a way. I keep rewatching it a lot for some reason XD Don't know if its message or the animation but I just love it. Dark but interesting. I did share vid with few people and seems it gives similar feelings to my friends. I say its a very successful video :D

This is great! I love how we get to see how the concept of Pour evolved into this series (Edit..maybe even before Pour) Its like watching your kid grow up. Btw, your sound design and music is great too. You keep everything just simple enough, in all aspects, to tell your story but enough for it to be very effective (though I know you put a lot of work into this) Tip of the cap to everyone!

Your messages are loud and clear though not too on the nose on your work. I feel like many of these could eventually be put together as a full story... like a History of the World (Mel Brooks) type compilation of vignettes and still all connect yet be their own stories. Anywho.... big fan of your work. Glad youre growing your audience. You deserve it. Cant wait to see whats next.

You know I see a lot of people try to interpret your work and I just can’t help but feel like it’s not all black it white. Like what you show us may not be literal and there is a much more deeper meaning than “people who help others get walked on sometimes but it’s ok because others who take advantage of them gets hurt to” or “what goes around comes around” maybe I’m just looking to deep into things but I always feel like there’s more.
