    Followed a Vincent motorbike up Burwood Highway through Wantirna and Vermont this afternoon. It was a joy to see on the road. Made me smile. Had to play this song.

    I know how many freakin' amazing nuances this song has, harmonic bending, soloing, vocals etc etc etc but i really dig the little part just after 4:53 with that single deadening of the strings. so cool. jeff is arguably my biggest idol when it comes to music and he is so approachable and easy to get in touch with... it's fantastic!

    I know he'd never do it, but I'd love to see how Jeff would play this song today.
    Quite different maybe? But nothing is lost, I still drop my jaw to this regularly.

    Well hi,
    Firstly thanks to anyone who enjoyed this. Appreciated.
    I actually haven't played this song for some 12 years - not because I stopped liking the song, it's just I agree with some here who have expressed reservations about my approach to what is a fantastic story and song.
    Slow down? Bulldozing the story with the accompaniment? Yeah, fair call I reckon.
    NOT fishing for any rebuttals I hasten to add.
    I used to play everything at 130mph like this. You live and learn. Best, Jeff Lang.

      best reply Ron. james would've held that bastard wide open, molly on the back or not. Yes Jeff we live and learn as musicians. but few could argue with your passion and desire you obviously diaplay to bring this across any better than this. kudos

    This is a really good, upbeat version of the song; how can anyone criticise? It captures the danger and speed of riding a motorcycle and therefore perfectly captures the essence of the story. I'd love to see this played live; UK tour coming soon? Maybe start in Derbyshire! Definitely going to look up some of your other You tube contributions.

    The problem with covering Richard Thompson is that for all the brilliance of his guitar work he doesn't show off. It's all in the service of the song. But who else can play like that and not show off?

    Jeff Lang.s from Geelong in Victoria. I first saw him at a hotel in Horsham I reckon about 16 years ago. Playing blues and some wicked slide and tapping on a board. Saw him at the Corner Hotel in Richmond with Chris Wilson. Brilliant together. Check him out with Hatz Fitz

    Got to admit the accent and 'raping of the guitar' did put me off at first, but from all the covers on youtube it's probably the best one.

  • @kookofor96
    @kookofor96 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, reminds me of the definition of "gilding the lily" - To make superfluous additions to what is already complete - That doesn't just go for trying to remake an already perfect song; it also goes for trying to relive youth by buying all the toys (or Harleys) one couldn't afford then.

    @SpikeX21 Couldn't agree with you more. He really has made this cover his own. Definitely know what you mean about how he rushes things. It's hard to admit fault in a guitarist you truly idolize, but this is probably the only bad thing to say about Jeff (and even then, it's kinda just part of his style!). In my opinion, no one does acoustic guitar better. Tommy Emmanuel's a close second (or first? who can even say...), but it's so hard to compare them and hardly worth trying, Just my 2¢!

      It’s on a live double album called Disturbed Folk .. and it’s my favourite version of the song by Jeff. RT is obviously the more authentic as he wrote it. Either way it’s the greatest motorcycle song ever

    I know this has been up for a while now, however it is still a great rendition - not taking away from RT's original - and definitely appropriate that a boy from Oz delivers this song about a bike who's engine was designed by another boy from Oz! (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phil_Irving)

    Hey Kevin, I don't suppose there's any way I could get a copy of "Disturbed Folk" from you is there? I bought a CD years ago at a Jeff Lang show, but someone decided they needed it more than I did, and stole it from me. A great album that is long out of print. I asked Jeff a few years ago if he was going to do a re-issuing of it and he said he won't be. Pity, because I think it's definitely one of his best. Anyhow, whatever your answer to my request is, cheers.

  • @PhilCherry3
    @PhilCherry3 11 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    While i appreciate the his technical ability, I feel that his need for speed causes him to bulldoze those moments in the song that allow so many other fine musicians and singers, such as Del McCrory, to put their unique spend on the storytelling aspects that are the real drivers of this song.

  • @jjk717
    @jjk717 15 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great guitar playing and I don't mind the tempo - I've actually seen RT play it faster than this himself! Not crazy about his voice though...

  • @kookofor96
    @kookofor96 16 ปีที่แล้ว

    Faster may be better when it comes to motorcycles; but its not necessarily so when it comes to guitar playing. I've only seen pictures of Vincents myself. Seems like most of the yanks on Harleys are geezers trying to relive their youth.

  • @senseihitokiri
    @senseihitokiri 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Feels like an exercise in guitar and less of an expression of the song. Jeff Lang is an incredible player, but I think he pulled the emotion right out of the song with this version. Just my opinion though. As this is my first introduction to him I can't make a stance on his entire body of work, just specifically this song. Well done on the harmonics bend though, didn't expect that at all lol.

  • @kookofor96
    @kookofor96 17 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Now Langs and Kellys and McCourys won't do
    cause they don't have the soul of Thompson's "52".

  • @Scored51
    @Scored51 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Awesome! But I hope someone in the last few years has corrected Jeff with the lyrics. It's "Beezers, Triumphs, and Nortons won't do" not "Nortons, Indians, and Greezers"... . The term "Beezer" is period slang for BSA motorcycles making all four bike references in the song British makes. Kinda makes sense for a songwriter born in London in the 1940's, eh?

  • @meekrob
    @meekrob 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly don't care for his voice (on this song anyway) but I haven't seen anyone maul an acoustic like that since the late great Michael Hedges. And that's a good thing.
