I have an Ariens 46" riding mower that I bought in 2016. I use the wash port after every use. The underside of the deck looks almost new with some of the paint missing of course.. I have never had to scrape the deck. I lift the discharge shoot and watch the mist and grass being discharged. There is always a pile of wet grass when I move the mower. All I can say is that the wash port on my mower works great.
I think those wash ports are a gimmick, I just turn my mower on it side and spray it with the hose every time I cut my grass. In my opinion it's much easier that way. Awesome video as always
I have a Husqvarna 22" S-P with Honda engine & wash port. After connecting hose & starting engine & tieing the bail down I shut the fuel off. The time it takes to run out of gas is enough to clean the underdeck. As mentioned before this must be done after each mowing to get the results you want; easier said than done of course. that is my experience with wash ports. The shut-off valve is a Honda feature as we know & many mowers do not have one.
Thank you for your tips! I've noticed it's mainly an issue on wet s. Sometimes I have a to wait a few days before the lawn is totally dry before using the mower.
Hi, I do not use the wash port as it does not clean well. I scrape and brush grass clippings off and then use Fluid Film to coat the underdeck. Makes it so much easier to clean next time. Good video!!! Thanks!!
Hey bro cool video. I think that the wash port on these mowers are a waste of time. I think that you'll have more success in scraping of the debris and washing it with a garden hose if not a pressure washer will work wonders for sure.
Yeah the wash port definitely seems "gimmicky" to me. In with you on that, tilting the mower over and scraping it out, or just using your hand to scoop it out would be faster and more effective than messing with a wash port. MAYBE a wash port on a riding mower deck would be more effective, as cleaning them is a PITA! great video sir!
I made it a routine to cut the lawn every Sunday so I don't really deal with excessive buildup of grass. After every mowing and trimming session I usually just use my leaf blower to clean the underside of the deck.
When i get a mower that needs some work, i always use a pressure washer and some car wash soap to clean the underside of my mower. Usually gets rid of all the crap. It also often makes the recipient of the mower happy, since its clean.
The wash port may be fine for rinsing the underside immediately after use, but removing any buildup will require a scraper. I've never used the wash port on my mower as it was given an undercoat after purchase. Additionally, I use the discharge port as I've found mulching works most efficiently when the grass doesn't grow much.
I have used the wash port on my lawnmower couple of times and it have never worked. So I stopped using it completely and I just remove grass from under the deck with sharp stick. But if the power washer is in use at the same day as i mow the lawn, then i use it to clean the deck.
The wash port on my Jdeere works great especially if I have to mow wet grass. I pull it in the driveway connect the hose lower the deck all the way to the lowest setting turn on the water run the mower for 5 to 10 minutes. This will flush out the grass really thoroughly . At the end of season I use the zero turn to grind up and pick up dried dead leaves which acts as an abrasive to clean the under deck for next season .
My Toro Recycler has a washout port, but my experience has been almost the same as yours. I've tried it, but IMO its not worth the time. I don't use it now. It amazes me how people can neglect their lawn, then expect a push mower to be able to mulch tall grass. I once saw a forum discussion where someone was complaining that their mower wasn't able to bag knee-high grass that was in standing water.
So I've since come to like using the wash port, but only when I know I've mowed damp grass. It's not perfect, but it saves me from breaking out the scraper and the pressure washer twice a year
I've wanted to add one to my Honda powered Push mower and my rider mower but bow after seeing this video. I feel like a good old scrapping clean is better then a wash port personally.
I use the wash port when I get done cutting my yard . By doing so I have no rust on my 2005 Toro which I added myself. It's easier to clean when the grass is not dried for I plan on keeping this mower a long time due to cost of a new one. P.S. This was a reclaimed mower.
I just bought a toro for my first house , it’s my first machine and it stops makes sense with the tall grass and wet grass , I have always live in an apartment so this is all new Any advice on cutting grass I hate it when it stops , we’ll also it just stop raining an sun came out when at it to cut it, So I’ll take any knowledge
I use wash port every other mow and other than a thin skin like lawyer on the lowes part of the ring it completely cleans off the deck done it that way for past 5-6 years have had absolutely never had an issue or had to scrap and on my hose I have quick connect permanently so everything else that I plug into my hose I have a permanent male attachment
I've also owned it since day one so I had never had any sort of build up to get with I imagine it won't work well if you don't use it at the start or routinely use it
QUESTION: Is that hose cleaning feature only for people with city water? Or can it also be used by people who have well water with minerals such as salt in it? I have a well and have never used that feature for that reason.
as long as you have pressurized water, whether well, spring, or city water, it'll work with it. The minerals will only add a bit of color to the underside of the deck but you'll never see it.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE Thank you for responding. My primary concern is that the minerals and salt in the well water will cause rust that could potentially damage the mower. Is that a concern? I'm also wondering because there was a person who was trying to "help' by raising the hood of a riding mower and rinsing it out with his well water (which also includes salt). I hope this doesn't cause any form of rust or damage to the mower. Do you think there is something I should be concerned about?
I have a troy bilt mower with the water cleaner, I used it for about 5 times after mowing, and it had the spray no water leaking on deck and ran mower for 5 minutes. After water off and out of the mud, I kept noticing there was no difference, only until you put it on the side and manually scrape the deck witha scraper. The only reason I used the water cleaner is, instruction said to and this was the first mower that came with this feature. The water feature is a good idea but does not stop the mower when cutting tall crass. Plus your don't have to waste water, just turn it over opposite the gas tank and scrape it. It's quicker and you know that the mowed grass is off of the deck, I do this about every 3 mows, If you take care of your equipment, it is just a common thing to do, but does not stop the mower from cutting the grass. If grass is tall raise the mower up where it does not bog the engine and the after the first time lower the mower and cut again with mower set to lower on the wheels.
I never use it because after cutting the grass why do I want to dump clumped wet grass on top of it or on my sidewalk or drive way. I am like you every three or more cuts I tilt it up & scrap it. I also clean it real well on the last cut of the season & spray the underside of the deck with epoxy paint for next season.
The wash out port is very quick if you do it ever time you mow it only takes a minute or two at least on my Husqvarna but I keep mine clean so I don't mind burning a little gas and using the hose I even spray the top off before putting it away
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE yup my other mowers don't have the wash port and those don't get cleaned everytime but when they do I tip them and scrap and or spray the debris off so your right if you don't use it don't bother wasting your time trying to later on it won't work as intended
The under side of my mowing deck is filthy. Lots of petrified grass on it. Can I hit it with a pressure washer or would that force the water into areas it shouldn’t be?
My stuff pre-exists wash out ports but I wouldn't use one and frankly wouldn't expect it to do much if anything.I have one mower which runs fine even in heavy wet grass, but bogs down in heavy wet grass after some hours run time due to the float bowl screw. It's never clogged and there's never been anything visible, even when examined with an eye loupe. I scrape it before each use and I get about 2 hours use before power lessens. Every use for over 20 years. The problem started after use of gasohol (its own story). I figure some kind of fuel reaction occurs causing a kind of oxidation buildup narrowing the diameter of the feed hole. No problems with my other equipment with similar float bowl screws.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE I worked in an auto shop for over 30 years. When they first put ethanol in the gas they had no idea what the long term effects would be. As it turned out, the ethanol ate up the nitrile rubber valve stem seals and other rubber parts. Prolonged exposure also corroded aluminum parts such as carburetors. The auto industry switched to viton valve stem seals and improved the composition of the other rubber parts to counter the effects of the ethanol once they realized ethanol wasn’t going away. We replaced a lot of valve stem seals under warranty in the’80s. Unfortunately, the small engine manufacturers weren’t so quick to follow. Not only that but cars don’t usually sit unused for 6 months at a time like lawn equipment does. The ethanol gas breaks down over time and no amount of fuel stabilizer will help. Aluminum carburetors corrode and jets clog. The gas companies are concerned only about cars and couldn’t give a rat’s behind about small engines. Now days they make their engines able to RUN on ethanol gas. The problem is that if the fuel system isn’t bone dry when stored the jets clog with broken down gas. By switching to plastic carburetors, you can usually get away just cleaning them and be back in business. I’ve seen aluminum float bowls and chambers completely destroyed by being stored with ethanol gas in them. I don’t think there was a plan from the beginning to sabotage small engines. The engines generally run fine with 10% ethanol but you just can’t store them for months without removing all of the ethanol fuel and running it until it quits. With most owners that generally doesn’t happen. Around here, you may think you have a few more weeks to mow then the weather changes suddenly and the mowers get forgotten until warm weather returns. There in lies the problem.
No I do not use those washout ports. And you said it yourself a few times, the whole idea for those are to not let the grass build up under the deck and to use the port after each mowing session and most people are just either too busy or too lazy to use it and just don't really care!! Great video tho. Thank you for this one!
I do use the wash out port on my toro push mower but, I feel like one on my rider has a better place because you can't just flip that over. I think the wash out port is an ok idea but it still needs some work, I will also say the troybilt I worked on and my troybilt cabin mower both of those ports sucked but idk if the mower has it I will use it but for not more than 4 minutes
Definitely would rather scrape my mower deck than use the wash port. I've never seen any actual results from using a wash port. If you really want to keep the deck clean, scrape it off from time to time, and before you mow, spray the underside with WD40, especially if it's wet grass. The WD40 will help to keep wet grass from clumping up onto the deck while you mow. I also like to replace my air filter and spark plug every year or so, as well as sharpen the blade. The impact from any one of those being even a bit worn may be minimal, but it adds up. I still remember the first time Dad and I did a proper tune up on his lawn mower after years of never maintaining it. We started with putting a new blade on, and he wanted to run it out of gas before draining the oil, so I went and started cutting the grass with the maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of a tank of fuel it had, and I got through the whole front yard, and I think most of the back yard just by replacing the blade. It drastically improved performance and efficiency. Then we replaced the spark plug and air filter, and suddenly the engine that I was barely strong enough to start became pretty dang easy to start. Regular maintenance every year will definitely help to keep the mower performing well and cutting as best it can. Definitely worth doing all of that, even on your friends mower there, I think you'd see a bit of improvement from replacing that filter and spark plug as well.
from what I can tell, to comply with EPA regulations, it has to meet a certain standard, and apparently, 125 hours that time. After that the engine is going to make more emissions than acceptable but by then, most of them, will have failed anyway.
I need an opinion if possible, I’ve got an older wheel horse riding mower (1985) and If the fuel is left on while the tractor is off the fuel will seep out of the top of the bowl as if the float isn’t set properly but I can’t see any adjustment on it. That being said if I mow in any gear other than first the tractor will buck and stall like it’s starving for fuel. I’m at a complete loss here. Any advice is appreciated.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE the float is attached to the needle. As the fuel enters the carburetor bowl the float rises and slowly seats the needle until the bowl is full. Sometimes if the float is bad (has a hole in it) or isn’t adjusted properly the needle will never fully seat and allow the carb to over flow. I think I may just replace it with the various problems it has.
There is a reason this mower has difficulty cutting tall grass it's the way the mulching system setup if you don't have anything to stop the grass from sticking in there and not flying out it gets clogged especially if the grass is wet it gets clogged really badly and that can quit the mower
I tried the wash port, it's junk. My lawn tends to be wet a lot because it floods. I just tip the mower over, and using a garden hose with a nozzle, it gets all the stuff off and wastes no gas.
Me personally, i like using the scraper i feel the hose just makes the process much longer, but isn’t it also fair to say that the mower could also slow down idk the great blade type is thicker than say a thinner more momom bluegrass, like Florida has the very thick st Augustine and that stuff is wicked t mowers
I would not use it after each mowing, it’s easier to just scrape bottom of the deck. Now I would consider using the wash port after the last cut of the season followed by gasoline coating the deck as a rust preventive.
This is the identical mower I got off the curb I put a plug in it I changed the oil and I did the air filter but the thing is definitely not the world's most healthy engine but for free it still cuts grass but let's see if there's a simple fix to this I don't think there is though
Not everybody can flip it over and wash it. Like old people. You have to use it while the grass is still wet. Its not a pressure washer. I use it on my lawn tractor just after mowing. I find a flat spot. Lower the deck to the ground and let it run for perhaps a minute and it is almost free from grass. Not that I check every time but when I did it was ok.
My zero turn has 2 wash out ports I never have used them I try to wait until the grass is dry and cut it every 2 weeks but my grass grows pretty quick too
no unfortunately not, the blade being dull was the main culprit that.. and they let the grass get too tall as well. Cleaning is best done manually, otherwise you;ll have to wash it each and every time after use.
Never seen a wash port actually work. Just scrap and clean it good let it dry and use fluid film. After awhile it'll build up again but it comes off much easier.
Id advise them like dont wait till the grass is long enough to cut, cut it regularly if you dont wanna deal with the tall grass, that simple And about the port, i dont use it at all, cuz i run the mower every single day for business, id rather maintain other crucial parts like carb, plug or etc to get it running better if i have time to play with the water port..
Wash ports are a sales gimmick. Scraper and brush are far better, quicker and no fuel waste. Cut the grass 1/3 the height of the leaf blade each pass will stop any bogging down😎
I don't use them because I don't think they work. I've had them on my last three mowers (riding and push) and they didn't do anything other than make the grass wet and messy to scrape off. Just scrape the deck every few weeks and things will be fine.

from what I can tell, to comply with EPA regulations, it has to meet a certain standard, and apparently, 125 hours that time.
I wasn't aware, that there was an adjustment for "float" to help It seal. Best choice is to either find a new carb, or rebuild kit.
Can you replace a plug wire on a weed trimmer Ignition coil ?? Thank you
technically no, it's best to replace the entire coil along with the wire.
I tried the wash port, it's junk. My lawn tends to be wet a lot because it floods. I just tip the mower over, and using a garden hose with a nozzle, it gets all the stuff off and wastes no gas.
that works too.
Me personally, i like using the scraper i feel the hose just makes the process much longer, but isn’t it also fair to say that the mower could also slow down idk the great blade type is thicker than say a thinner more momom bluegrass, like Florida has the very thick st Augustine and that stuff is wicked t mowers
me too, it just feels better to use.
I never use the washout port. I just raise my mower up on the correct side and wash it with a trigger sprayer. Let it cool down before doing so.
best way in my mind too!
I hose the underside of the mower manually on shower and carefully on jet every single mowing and the mower stays like new.
thank you D4x4Bronc
I would not use it after each mowing, it’s easier to just scrape bottom of the deck. Now I would consider using the wash port after the last cut of the season followed by gasoline coating the deck as a rust preventive.
you got that right
This is the identical mower I got off the curb I put a plug in it I changed the oil and I did the air filter but the thing is definitely not the world's most healthy engine but for free it still cuts grass but let's see if there's a simple fix to this I don't think there is though
nice haul.
Not that I check every time but when I did it was ok.
thank you Axell.
My zero turn has 2 wash out ports I never have used them I try to wait until the grass is dry and cut it every 2 weeks but my grass grows pretty quick too
thank you Daniel Padgett.
I Never use the washing port. I use a pressure washer on the under side of the deck. Fast and efficient.
me too, thank you qfdforme.
I have used the wash up hose , but only after i scrape the build up grass out.
it works well if you use it after each and every mow
Thanks. This video real helped.
Glad it helped
Did cleaning it solve your problem of it cutting off?
no unfortunately not, the blade being dull was the main culprit that.. and they let the grass get too tall as well. Cleaning is best done manually, otherwise you;ll have to wash it each and every time after use.
The wash port is supposed to be used after each mowing
yes you are absolutely correct.
I tried the wash port on my Toro recycler before it works but most of the time I just scraped the deck after each use
thank you Turningwrenches85
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE your welcome
Had a wash out connector on a lawn tractor. Did not really work that well in that situation.
I know right, but it's better than physically cleaning I guess.
Raise the RPM to around 3200 as it was designed to run. A new spark plug might help as well.
We have small lawn. Mow when dry little build up
I would be curious to see how it works if you used it every time right after mowing.
Oh I think it would work wonders, but after 10 years of using it, you might have used up several gallons of fuel though.
Good video as always mate .. I'm not a fan of the washing ports.. jet wash all the way..
thank you Mick
I'm yelling at my phone right now. Telling you to hurry it up with the answer. Cause i'm standing here with a lawnmower that don't start
just a bit longer you're so close..!
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE 🥺
Never seen a wash port actually work. Just scrap and clean it good let it dry and use fluid film. After awhile it'll build up again but it comes off much easier.
me too, thank you Kenneth Lowe.
I just use a big flat head screwdriver, and it works by scraping off the grass
that works too.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE YEAHH
I have never had a lawnmower with a wash out port, but if I did, I can honestly say I probably wouldn’t use it.
thank you William Snow.
Id advise them like dont wait till the grass is long enough to cut, cut it regularly if you dont wanna deal with the tall grass, that simple
And about the port, i dont use it at all, cuz i run the mower every single day for business, id rather maintain other crucial parts like carb, plug or etc to get it running better if i have time to play with the water port..
you got that right, but they still let it get too tall, it really doesn't matter what you tell them.
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE thats how they gotta pay to someone to do it for them lol
I flip mine up after each use & hose it off for a minute or so, with a pressure nozzle on the hose
thank you jct300m.
Wash ports are a sales gimmick. Scraper and brush are far better, quicker and no fuel waste. Cut the grass 1/3 the height of the leaf blade each pass will stop any bogging down😎
that's what I was thinking, thank you Andrew Orli.
Because the discharge is closed open it so the grass can shoot out back on the yard to avoid clogging up
it is not recommended to do that, for safety.
Yeah I like was ports for a quick wash until I can do a detailed cleaning
makes sense
I don't use them because I don't think they work. I've had them on my last three mowers (riding and push) and they didn't do anything other than make the grass wet and messy to scrape off. Just scrape the deck every few weeks and things will be fine.
thank you Chris Hayes
There's the first problem I spotted wrong with it and it's it come from Lowe's
Ive had this issue with a brand new mower
interesting, did you figure it out?
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE not really. I think it’s something to do with a blockage from the blade to the basket
Just easier to lift it up spray the deck after each use is easier and quicker
thank you Walter D.
I have the same issue but it not tall grass
unfortunately sounds like a real serious issue then.
Easier to scrape periodically than wash especially at $5.00 plus a gallon for gas!
yes sir.
I got a mower like this
I hope it works well
But when I'm using it, the handles start raddaling which really bothers me
I use it. It's worthless. I always scrape afterwards.
I use my after every mow and even though it's not perfect, it keeps the build up down to a minimal. So in reality, it's not bad.
I think it would work better if it came out in multiple spots instead of that one spout
yes that makes sense.
Put mower on concrete or pavement lower deck as low as it goes let run 2 minutes. Done
thank you Matt Caldwell.
no - on that wash port-- waste of time and water
thank you Army Vet.
Power wash the bottom
me too.
I see this video is vegan friendly.
trying to be more conscientious
@@INSIDEHOUSEGARAGE man, where I'm from, more people smoke green than eat it lol
Don't cut grass when it is wet. That wash port is useless.
thank you fwflyer78.
The problem is frequently the nut behind the handles.
thank you haneyoakie14, it makes sense.
Thanks for nothing
same to you
Nope, don't even bother with it. I do a better job scrapping it when done every time I mow. Waste of water and in the house quicker.
thank you Ed Rodrigues.
