okay I do the same thing punch the hole then the back side looks a lil gnarly. I smash it flat back down. but it doesn't look pretty after I have to grind. Drawing out over the horn takes several heats. 2x it ended up too big. Then right size. but the lip technique did not really get results the lip portion did not come out properly it just kept squashing and didn't really come out like in the video. I watched it 5 times now. ugh..
Great tip on correcting an offset punch! I love that tip, but I think I'd have necked the handle in before drifting the eye open, while the bar is still manageable
It’s interesting that you don’t have to harden the opening and the point that pops the top. I have a very cheaply made opener at home that constantly bends. I’ve never used a hand forged opener, I’ll make one for the house though! Thank you

I haven't. A fixed version similar to a Swiss army knife might not be bad. But the little folding one I carried on my key ring might be a hard thing to make work.

I want to master these types though because i been making the other style in which is like fish tailing a end out some and doing a simple curl at the end,though fun,i rather do the ones you introduced.

Although I think the name originates from an opener more like the one in the video because the fing resembles the handle end of a large key.
My dad (he was born in 1940) told me that beer cans, Coke cans too as far as I know, didn't have pop tops at first and the pointed end was meant for them. One or two punches to drink from and one in the opposite side for air to enter the can. I think the whole church key thing was meant as a joke in that if you used the opener enough, you needed the Lord's help and thus a key into the church.

every time you take your piece out of the oven, i barely see any scale on the surface of your piece, do you brush it off camera or is it just a matter of material quality?

Great project. FYI: if you make the handle end a little thinner it works great to get under the tab of a can. So it can be a bottle and can opener. 🍻

Starting back from the edge to establish the mass at the edge then moving the punch forward to push it into the ring should help.

I think its OK to approach that either way. I don't think I had any particular reason for the way I approached that step.

Compared to the steampedout version the forged one is much heavier
Just as I’m thinking is the anvil supposed to move, he says I need to tighten my chains.
Could you bolt an anvil down instead?

Sometimes you find some cool stuff no one is using if you keep your eyes open. Good find.
what kind of wax are you using? i have a few other projects that id rather wax than oil blackening!
I use Johnsons paste wax, but any similar wax works

They are just 1/4 x 3/4 mild steel
