I think this raises an interesting question, because honestly... is it? When a hearing person watches that section of the piece, we are conscious of what's "missing." Some of us may even be hearing the music in our heads as we watch. But a profoundly deaf person who has been profoundly deaf since birth may not even be conscious of that gap. They know there's a difference, of course, between how we experience the world and how they do, but they've never experienced sound and therefore don't have any reason to consider anything to be "missing" (aside from visual cues like the singers' breathing and mouth shapes). I don't think it's really possible for hearing people to experience the world that way. We are always aware of sound, even when it isn't present.
@@elizabethgross8918 As a performer in the Buffalo Philharmonic, we played annual Xmas concerts at the St Mary's school for the deaf. As a 20-something, it seemed ridiculous at first. Many were profoundly deaf, and it almost seemed like a publicity stunt, since I was young and it was cool to be jaded. However, my section leader went up front to the audience, and a kid who never made sounds to communicate felt the clarinet while it was played and made sounds herself. Then, the crowd signed along with the Christmas carols we played, whose texts were placed on the overheads (remember those?). They were quite in rhythm, which initially surprised me, then overwhelmed me. Of the hundreds of Xmas concerts I played in my career, it's a singular memory.
this is one of the most incredible things i've ever seen or heard. my choir director emphasizes faces, feeling the music, but this... this is far beyond anything i could've dreamed of.
I had the privilege to sing this song with my choir in high school about two years ago. It was so powerful and meant so much to us at the time. I want to say thank you to Paul Caldwell and Sean Ivory as well as this choir for being amazing instruments that inspired my choir director to gift my choir the opportunity to sing a song that literally changed my life.
@@mostcertainlyben I sang it in middle school choir in 2014 and the song randomly periodically rises from the grave in my head to this day, lol. It’s a beautiful piece

I've watched this video at least 50 times and it brings me to tears every time when they get to the 'silent singing' part. Thanks Lee and Choir members!!
Such a powerful performance, and I really appreciate the way the camera spends so much time on the sign language interpreter. She's marvelous to watch, and I like the way she adds a phrase over the choir's final held note, finishing it right on the cut-off. Marvelous!
Adding sign language is genius! Great sounding choir! Outstanding performance, great energy. This should have received an instantaneous standing ovation!
Ok I started crying. Not only was the performance amazing, not only was the involvement of everyone (both in singing and in signing) perfect and to the point, the moment where everyone fell silent and only signed? It hit so profoundly in me I don't even have words to describe it. And then when they moved forward... I think I would be bawling my eyes out if I was in that audience. Spectacular!
I love this arrangement and this performance. Whenever I feel discouraged I listen to it and I’m lifted-not as high as I will be one day, but high enough for this Earth.
Sang this song for my choir, became the most memorable as it was one of the first songs I performed getting into advanced. I love everything about this piece. The singing, sign language, the clapping THE INTENSITY!
Wonderful presentation and sensitive to the people who do not hear the same way as others do - if at all. As I was watching the sign language lady I couldn’t help but think how fortunate I am that I can hear not only the words but also the singing.
To audiate that phrasing of music (silent mental singing/hearing of the music) accurately on the beat by the whole chorus takes skill. I have listened to other groups perform this piece, but this version remains my favorite.
The singing in this is remarkable, especially for a collegiate ensemble. All the other positive things mentioned about engagement, movement, etc...are terrific, too, but it's extra-impressive that they are the total package! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you Sister Estes for sharing this amazing Piece with me!! I'm so proud to have such beautiful young and gifted Christians sisters to inspire me along His Path of Protection!!!
I love it so much. The only unfortunate thing about it is that their lighting options in there were probably limited. Also that high note was a killer (but the rest was perfect so ill forgive)
Least we Forget... The 1st thought came into my mind while listening to this was my Grandmother's stories she use to share with me ............. One of the most profound stories was : The red stripes on the American flag represented the blood that use to run down their faces after getting beat by the police , ....... The stars was what they seen when they got hit in their head with the sticks........ and the white part was the obvious : She said don't ever give allegiance to a flag that ( HATE ) you , give allegiance to " THE MOST HIGH GOD " who will deliver you from the hand of your enemy and land of captivity ./ but the Lord laughs them to scorn And they shall afterward become dishonored corpses and an unceasing mockery among the dead,. For he shall strike them down speechless and prostrate and rock them to their foundations; They shall be utterly laid waste and shall be in grief and their memory shall perish.
My choir is singing this too, but some of my friends who are certified as ASL interpreters say that the use of signing is inappropriate unless there are people in the audience that understand it. And, are they even using standard ASL?
Sammie (in front) studied ASL and spent months developing a “story” through signs with two ASL teachers and interpreters. It is not inappropriate to perform in other languages, even if nobody else in the room understands them! ☺️
Bravi! Incroyable! 👏🏻 Do the ASL "movements" only communicate to anglophones? (There would not be any deaf language "speakers" in our audiences here in France.) But, I want to do this song with my gospel choir in Rueil-Malmaison. The silent Refrain is quite effective. But we can surely learn the other Choreographie & claps.

I literally love this song so much. My choir (middle schoolers mostly) is singing this and it just scratches my brain in the right spot
Didn't dawn on me till after that the silent section is how the profoundly deaf person "hears" the piece. Amazing performance choice.
That made me tear up!!
