IN addition to all that is mentioned, I would also turn the flywheel a few times by hand to hear and feel the machine turn over. Should be no squeaks, bumps or clanks. Just the smooth sound of plunger rolling back and forth and pickup reel turning. If allowed, I'd also trip the knotter and let it run through a knot cycle to make sure it is all working smoothly. If you know where to look, there are a few other simple things to check like the timing of the forks and needles, timing of the knotter disks, etc. If all is well there, guy who had it probably knew what he was doing. If it has been running out of time, it may have some hidden damage. If there is still a bale or two in it, look at the knots it tied. Are the ends even and clean cuts on the twine. Curious to know why this baler seems to have a new knotter frame installed on the right side. With labor, that part alone costs about $1,000. Knotters are where all the voodoo of a square baler takes place and those are some expensive parts to replace.
Both our 24t balers kick ass on the wildside. I am 51 and i know i was in my teens running the one. We bale the crap out of them every year with grease gun maintenance and blow off the knotters before we start
Hi, I live in Winder Ga and brainstorming up an idea to start a custom hay bailing business. What would I need to get started?? Like what type of equipment? Iam thinking JD 5065E tractor. I see Massey makes a small square bailer 1840?? Don’t know if I’d need a teeder and a windower. I know there’s not one business that does this custom hay cutting within 100 miles of me..
Start small, buy used equipment and keep your investment to a minimum. It's not just about putting grass in a cube, you need to manage moisture and timing for a good quality product. You absolutely need a rake and tedder. Find an old timer who can help.

The easy tip is stay away from green. Never saw a J D small baler that wasn't an unreliable money pit.

Another thing to consider is that this press hasn't run much, so why was it traded in? Could it be a Monday copy?
New holland baler the very best
Can you do one of these on the big baler. And do you look for the same things on a John Deere baler when trading them in.
+The Farming Life it's on our to do list
