- Babi Yar was one of the greatest crimes of WWII. The Germans determined to 'sanitise' the site of the massacre by destroying all the buried bodies. For the concentration camp inmates forced to do this grim work, they faced a choice between being killed by the SS or staging a mass breakout in the hope that some could survive. This is their story.

It's poetic that the prisoners found the tools of their escape on the bodies of the dead, they had been forced to dig up and burn. It's like the dead were helping them escape.

Yes very true. Almost as if it was too late for them, but not for their brother prisoners. I’m sure those dead would of willingly gave anything they had to their surviving prison brothers in order to escape and survive the war.

For anyone who wants to know more: in 1966 Anatoly Kuznetsov, a Soviet writer, first published a novel “Babyi Yar” based on his memories as a teenage eyewitness. It was translated into many languages.
Kuznetsov lived in the USSR, but I hardly think he can be called a Soviet writer. :)

I always feel inspired when I hear about people that decide to take their fate into their own hands, rather than meekly submitting. It is fortunate that there always seems to be that guy that goes the extra mile. I'm reminded of the Heraclitus quote, “Out of every one hundred men, ten shouldn’t even be there, eighty are just targets, nine are the real fighters, and we are lucky to have them, for they make the battle. Ah, but the one, one is a warrior, and he will bring the others back.” Thank God for the warriors among us.

Studying religion it is easy to see my statement is entirely factual.
A lot of gods are fine with war, mass death, and destruction. Some even promote it or use it as a tool. The Christian God is fine with all 3. Many other religions have literal gods of War or have allegedly destroyed entire cities or flooded the entire planet. Many gods have shown many acts of violence or vindictive actions against the people who don't follow their ways.

This excellent video proves that free nations need strong militaries. Anyone who thinks this cannot happen again is living in a dream world. In my city we have a Babi Yar wilderness park. Until today I had no idea about the reason why. I am over 50 yrs old. Thank you. Now I can share this with my kids and future grandkids.
Just now in listening to your accounting of the Sonderkommando labors at Babi Yar, I am convinced there are no worse tyrants of treachery and butchery than that of the SS. I had been convinced there were none worse than the Japanese during WWII. Now I think they were all equally capable, along with the communists and any present day regimes like ISIS, which can't be left out of any horrific accountings.
...... unfortunately that now even extends to certain western countries,who've committed certain excesses in the ME/Africa & even in SE Europe - 1990's .......

I visited Babi Yar in September 2017. It's heartbreaking.
I think this is your best yet. Gut-wrenching, heartbreaking, and gripping, all at once. The scenes you painted with your narration played out like a movie in my imagination, such was the strength of your story. Now the greatest mystery: Why isn't Hollywood knocking on your door to turn your work into a movie or a TV series? It would be worth seeing. Once again, Thanks Dr. Felton for all you do.

Good day, Mr Felton. Thank you for another extremely well done documentary. Only check the location of Ponary. That killing site is not located in Northern Poland, but in Lithuania. Inhabitants of the Vilno ghetto were massacred there by the Germans and their Lithuanian auxiliaries. Greetings from Europe.

The thumbnail always reminds me of the relatively well fed concentration camp prisoners in the movies and dramas. For obvious reasons they can't starve the actors but it reminds me how the real deal was tens of thousand times worse.
I've seen the photo on the screen a great many times. I often wonder if some of the bodies are still there. "Everyday, more and more people did not come back to the barracks alive..." "If anyone was to survive, it would have to be by their own ingenuity and bravery." Those words outlined just how desperate the situation was for these poor people who had to suffer through this day in and day out. As far as I'm aware, judging by what the inmate said (I apologize for not putting his name), most of the camps on the eastern front were being liquidated around the time. Correct me if I'm wrong. Time was of the essence for the inmates. This reminds of a phrase that Captain EJ Smith once said. "It's every man for himself" (EJ Smith, April 15, 1912). Had the inmates not taken the very slim chance of being able to escape, I fear that most of what we know about the Babi Yar Massacre would've been lost to time. I can not express how grateful I am to the inmates for their bravery in the face of death to be escape and tell us their stories. This just goes to prove that one doesn't have to be a soldier in order to be a warrior. Sometimes, the greatest soldiers are just ordinary people. Much like these courageous inmates. RIP to those who did not survive!

What a fascinating story, yet horrifying ordeal those prisoners had to endure. Sometimes we lose sight of how good we have it, not having to go through anything such as this. Count your blessings and never take anything for granted.

Is the photo at :05 a “confirmed” photo from the actual Babi Yar shootings? I’ve watched several documentaries on this and never seen that picture or any others of the actual shooting, just the photos taken after when covering up the corpses

Some of the same tactics are used today and many of the issues in Middle East today are traced back to this event. There's a Exhibition in USA, Kanas City, Missouri. Auzwitz- Not long ago, Not far away. The exhibit has over 700 artifacts from this Concentration Camp. It's disappointing this exhibit reached only two cities in entire Country. It will end Early January 2022.

I do not have the words to describe how I feel about this incident.. I had to leave my house after seeing this and go for a ride in the country and cry till my eyes were totally bloodshot... I just cannot believe this actually happened and many more incidences of Nazi behaviors..
