    it's really funny how people who don't use makeup think that we're doing it for them hahaahh. You should try the coconut bronzer by the body shop. It comes in a metal container and works really really well.

    Great discussion about beauty standards! One year I stopped wearing make up and dying my eye brows etc., because I was so annoyed why women are expected to look in a certain way, very polished, just to "look normal". For me it was a great experience (including not shaving and dying hair) to see, what was I doing and for what or who. Would definitely to recommend everyone, regardless of gender.
    I did slowly get back into make up, I realised it is a passion of mine, but I have been able to be more brave with my looks because I am doing it purely for myself. Like the wise one once said - do you boo 💛

    • @Gittemary

      I have experienced a similar thing, it is so giving to try and refrain from doing “what is expected” and take the time to find a balance that fits you as an individual ✨ GO YOU 🤩

    I have had a bad relationship with society and body hair that finally stopped shaving. I’ve been shaving since the 3rd grade! It’s so sad looking back. I’m pale with super dark hair and I have adults commenting on it. If anything good came fromlockdom for me, its working through a lot of my internalized misogyny and working on loving my body. I've also stopped wearing as much foundation or concealer because my skin just didn't like it.I'm very happy that I have a husband who is so supportive and any time I’m having a bad body day, his support and encouragement for me to be happy means the world. -

      Honestly I noticed that too! I think it could be because this kind of make up just looks more natural (which I prefer)?! Also my skin got much better after using natural products.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH for this discussion on shaving and body hate. I really get self-critical when my preferences on something that has to do with my body are ridiculed or viewed as lazy or unladylike. I feel that body hair, particularly body hair in more intimate areas, is more comfortable for me, and though I maintain my preference, the self-judgment creeps up nonetheless more often than I'd like to admit. Thank you for this gentle reminder that we should embrace our preferences, whatever they are. Love from Canada! xx

    I like makeup, because I feel "cleaner" or more put togeher in a way. It's weird, I know, but it's like: I wash my face, brush my teeth, do my makeup (very minimal) and then I am ready for the day.
    My make up is basically: concealer for under the eyes and pimples, brow powder and a little lip balm with some tint (use it as a blush when I feel my face is too light all around) Maybe some mascara, when I feel like it.
    I try not to add too much, just slightly highlight the things that I like about my face (with mascara, browpowder, lip tint) and camouflage the things I don't like (concealer). It's for me, my partner doesn't even really see a difference, it's that minimal.

    aaargh i'm about to complete my master degree and recently had some job interviews, when i was preparing for them, i got so angry about all thw recommendations for women: put on some make up to look professional, but not too much! do not wear too baggy clothes, but not too thight either etcetc... at some point i was like, and who determines what's too much or too little or whatever? everyones standards will be different, so i'll never be appropriate for everyone, so screw this, i'll just dress etc such that *I* feel comfortable, they hire me for my brain not my looks! but now as I'm preparing for my first day of work, these same thoughts are coming back!!

      @@Gittemary I would even go so far as to ask myself this question before every personal decisions. What I eat, how I dress, what I do in my spare time... It is a powerful tool to not only reflect on ones personal motivation to do these things but also to communicate this need to reflect to the outside world. This is, IMHO, desperately needed.

  • @samanthatheminimalist
    @samanthatheminimalist 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I love to wear makeup and I kind of feel the same way you do about it, for me it’s part of getting dressed. If I don’t put it on because I’m sick or something, I feel like I have been wearing pajamas all day which doesn’t feel good to me. But I also do not remove body hair and I don’t own any special hair tools or products. It’s an interesting dynamic and also a privilege to be able to be “professional” looking without using any hair products besides shampoo & conditioner. I stopped shaving my legs when I was about 16 because I didn’t enjoy it, I didn’t think it looked great etc so I said screw it. (I’m now 29) I have commented about this before and had some man saying I must be a lesbian, a man would never be okay with this. Well, I’m married to a man 😜 and if he had an issue with my body hair I wouldn’t be married to him.

    honestly, i could never give up shaving, but it's mostly because of sensory issues around having hair in general. it can be physically painful for me, so i shave for my own comfort :) but as for makeup, i barely wear it anymore! i've focused more on caring for my skin and learning to appreciate my face as it is, which has been very nice. but i still love doing makeup before special occasions to make myself feel more confident and ready!

    I don't know if you are particularly looking for recommendations, but I really like Inglot's Duraline. It is a small glass bottle of drops that you can use it to turn powers into a liquid product, so you can make an eye shadow into an eyeliner for example.
    Perhaps you have heard but here in Sweden the Body Shop is transitioning to refillable bottles, and they have started in two major stores already. Perhaps the Body Shop in Denmark is doing something similar?

    I don't wear much makeup in my daily life, but I do enjoy both playing with makeup and putting it on.
    Usually "dolling" myself up makes me feel more refreshed and energized, like I am ready to take on the world because I feel like I look great - and that makes me feel great :)
    I really don't do it to please others, or to make others compliment me. I simply do it because if makes me feel amazing, and if I can find the energy to make myself look this fabulous, I sure as hell can find the energy to do the tasks I have set for myself that day!

      I looked into taking that approach of DIY makeup with ingredients but I just feel so much safer buying it from companies that I know have already done the leg work of making sure its safe and packaged appropriately, but still sustainable, preserved naturally and with good ingredients. That's' why I started my TH-cam channel to review and test those companies, and I have discovered so many beautiful products and brands!!!

    girl... i came for a chill makeup video and got a whole ted talk 👏👏👏 THANKS so much for these thoughts and for always being so inclusive!!! it seriously dumfounds me that makeup is still such an emotional topic for people, like... to open yet another can of worms: it's 2021 and men STILL can't wear makeup without other people staring and assuming "oh he must be gay" 🤔 whether the guy is cis or not!!! trans men can wear makeup and not want to present female!! makeup isn't inherently made for women and it doesn't define sexuality or attractiveness or some sort of weird obligation to "look put together for men" 😤😤 and like you said, people always love having opinions about others walking down the street and it's so annoying... 🙄

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Absolutely - wearing makeup doesn’t automatically define your gender or your sexuality, and I feel so badly for those who can’t wear what they want out of fear of how the world will perceive them, this shouldn’t happen in 2021 😫

    I completely stopped wearing make up. Just some background info: I have some blemishes from time to time and I also have blonde barely visible brows and lashes. At first people told me how sick I look all the time. Really really annoying. But now after a while no one really comments on it anymore, I guess people get used to the no make up look. Sometimes I see a pimple and instantly think “oh I need to cover it, someone could see it!” and this is where the urge what matters to you you talked about kicks in: do I care when they see it? Not really. So I don’t need to cover it, and also I don’t have a product to cover it. Though, recently I bought a make up stick with a shiny glitter champagne colour and a coral colour, just in case I feel like some bling bling in my face :D

    I feel that theres also the intersection with transness where trans women are held to a higher standard of femininity? Like cis women (quite rightly) shout about how women shouldn't need to shave or wear makeup to be respected as women but then will disrespect trans women who also dont want to shave or wear makeup... make it make sense

    • @Gittemary
      @Gittemary  3 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Yes there is definitely is an expectation that trans women should always pass, be feminine (specifically hyper feminine) etc, trans women don’t owe that to anyone, I know a few people in this situation and the expectations they face to perform gender a certain way is absolutely exhausting 😭

    I feel as if a lot of people are holyer than holy when it comes to these things; you are either victim of misogony and sexism for wearing make-up, waxing, shavng or whatever... I recently lost a lot of weight and have dared to wear... crop tops... at almost 41. Because I can. And I like it. And so f´n what? But I´ve been judged... by other women;"trying too hard", "She´s married, it´s in-appropriate", "she just wants to be seen" - my husband dos´nt care. And so far no-one catcalled or made a pass at me when I go around my daily business so, I´m good. I´m one of those people who sweat like a horse all year ´round... do you ahve ANY idea how liberating wearing croptops with my midi-skirts are, in the heat?
    So it´s eather you´r a victim - or you´r liberated and free and "yourself" as nature intended...
    I honestly get really really tired... I´ve never heard a man say that he expect women to do any of these things, I have however heard plenty of women say so. I´ve mostly heard men express that they actually perfer their partners or potentiels free of make-up etc. We. Do. Not. Do. It. For. Men!
    Or well, some might... but the majority? I doubt it, I truely doubt it.
    I get so annoyd because I feel that if you do your nails, just give yourself a "clean" manicure, do your feet or put make-up on everyday, there is a lot of women who will judge; "Oh she´s fake", "she´s this and that". No - but some of us do actually feel more pamperede by doing these things. Maybe we´ve done them for 20 years and feel happy about it. Maybe, for someone like me who had a distorted body image/disphoria for many, many years this is actually a way for me to face myself everyday. I see reality and then I play around with it - knowing full well what I really look like. For me it is exactly what it is for you; I love to get that little time to myself. I am a mother of a 3 year old and I´m chronically ill with constant pain and an array of other symptoms - it´s luxury for me.
    That little morningsroutine of covering up the scars from having had a stage 1 melanoma removed from my cheak... filling out the brows that has been ruined by medically induced exema every morning... I love that time. It´s my 10 minutes before my family wakes up.
    The weekly shower where I scrub, shower and mousterise and then put tanning lotion on... it´s selfcare. I have no problem with my hair but I looove the feeling of smooth, babylike skin (besides the fact that I´m of part Danish, part eastern european decend and grow hairs like no tomorrow and have little absesses all the time :/ ) etc. It´s selfcare and pampering and honestly... none of anyone else´s business.
    But I´ve come to realise that apparently you can only be a feminist if you challenge patriarchy 24/7 and constantly question yourself and others and make sure to constantly, everyday, all the time question if you are doing what you´r doing for whatever reason... which really does take some of the joy away.
    We have been damaged so much from internalised misogony and patriarchy for thousends of years... but at this point I also feel like there´s and issue with certain parts of the feminist movement trying to make demands. Really just replacing one bad supressing system with another.
    I know I´m gonna get beat up about it but... just thank you. Thank you for not being so holy that everything have to be a political statement. Something as simple as putting on an eyeliner. It´s fine if it is but the pushing it on other women and viewing them as "bad accomplishes" (I heard it expressed that way, recently) is just... "skidetræls" as we´d say in Danish ;)

      I don’t know if she will see this, but thank you for sharing that! I’m glad you’re finding joy in that! I often fight with myself because I’m overweight and constantly have a mix of thoughts like “you can wear whatever, it’s your choice” and “no, just wear what it’s comfortable to you”. But as years go by, I have learned that comfort is more like joy, because having confidence and being happy with our choices is more important than meeting someone else’s expectations. 😊

    Thank you so much for such an eye-opening and inclusive discussion.... I am worried about one thing, that doesn't get spoken about a lot. There is sooooo much pressure being applied on people to procreate... I am childfree by choice and constantly find myself having to justify my choice to people who think it their business to worry about my womb... Like wtf? 😂 Why do people care? It's a choice just like any other.... I have also been wondering why this topic seems to ne such a taboo when linked to sustainability.... Any ideas, anyone?

      Well so two things: I absolutely hate when people ask me about having kids too, it is an incredibly personal decision and it puts the person asked on the spot in a really uncomfortable way I feel like - especially so if the questions is asked in sort of a "small talk, how's the weather" way. ugh, no thanks...
      I do see it being talking about some in sustainability, however personally I talk very little about it. Both Jens and I have mentioned our thoughts in videos as well. I think the reason why it might be regarded as "taboo" is because it is so incredibly personal, and it can quickly turn into a really black and white discussion about what the correct thing to do is. I don't want that on my platform, I don't want to tell people if they should have kids or not, that's not my place; I understand why some people choose not to, and I understanding why someone would want them as well. I hope this might clear it up 🌿

      @@Gittemary thanks for taking the time to read and reply to my message.
      Sorry about my rant, but it happend to me this morning yet again, so I think I was a bit on edge 🤪. I hope I didn't offend you or anybody else in this lovely community...
      As for your decision not to discuss certain topics, it is perfectly understandable. Some issues would only end up upsetting people, especially when they are soooooo personal. So, keep up your amazing work. I also wanted to add that your good mood is contagious. Thanks for getting me out of the dumps yet again 🙂

      It is a very sensitive subject. Mostly cause of emotions that children invoke to most of people.
      I can put small input cause l was very much thinking l will not have children till l was like close to 40 years. There were many reasons as you mentioned some of them and they are completely valid...
      But my husband and l started to feel we would like to have a child and we got a baby girl now 5 months old. I do completely understand and support child free life but now l also understand why maybe some people don't. Having child wokes up such a deep feeling of love that it changes you as person and some people are not so good in putting themselves out of their subjective experience and they think you are missing out. Some might be just mean ofc we can't know for sure but many ppl are just thinking you are missing out cause they are not able to see outside their scope, and some maybe just genuinely want you to maybe feel that love. I understand it's uncomfortable to be always questioned l was too...it is one of those subjects (unfortunately) that will take few more generations to evolve to acceptance of choice. Your life your choice. Stay strong 💪🌞

    As I got older I stopped worrying about shaving. I shave my legs maybe 3 months of the year and don't even do a good job. I have long legs so I just don't like the time that it takes. (and yes it's dark hair) If someone doesn't like it they shouldn't look. I do the armpits and the bikini area every week because it's fast 😂

    I had always have this weird equation that hair=warmth. My body hair is so thin that it seems non existent and am constantly cold, who knows if it's related. But seeing other girls who have thicker body hair than me and wears less clothing than me gave me the conspiracy theory. So yeah I've always been weird so don't mind what I've just said.

    Women don’t need to look more and more presentable but at the same time I’ve seen women attack and make a lot of comments about each other and their appearance and it’s sad when they preach empower women and each other when most don’t do that.

    I remember my mom telling me about this one actress. Pretty sure she was in the 1940’s. The actress’s husband had never seen her without makeup. She would get up very early, put on a full face of makeup, fix her hair & crawled back into bed. Yikes!

      @Trinity M It's more about marketing people a product that is normally unethicality made and trying to make women think they need it.
