  • The Romanovs are one of the world's most famous royal families, having ruled Russia for over 300 years. Their tragic end is well known, but the origin of the dynasty is less talked about. In this video I will try to explain where the Romanovs came from, and how they rose to power.

Fun fact at 10:31. The monastery that hosted Michael Romanov and his mother in Kostroma was the Ipatiev Monastery. That's the spot where Michael was proclaimed the new tsar of all the Russias in 1613. In 1918, the last Romanov tsar, Nicholas II, was executed, along with the whole imperial family, by the Bolsheviks in the Ipatiev House in Yekaterinburg. Creepy coincidence, huh? The more you know! ***Rainbow***

@@matthewbowen5841 Ipatiy is a saint (saint Hypatius) there are many churches in Russia but also many orthodox christian saints, so its sort of common but not too common. Ipatyevs house is a house of the Ipatyev family. This video is good, but misses a crucial point: like Boris Godunov before him, Michael was the legitimate, legal heir.
Russia at this time operated under the Byzantine Nomocanon, which recognized brothers-in-law as *actual* brothers, which meant that Boris was the childless Theodore’s heir. When the Godunovs all died, the next closest male relative was Michael, as his grandfather had been “brother” of Ivan IV.
At most, the Council could have found a reason why the Romanovs must be excluded from consideration, but Michael was the natural legal choice to succeed.

There is another genealogy which is much more plausible.
In 1555, dumnyj ďak Elizar Ivanovič Cypletev prepared the Gosudarev rodoslovec, a genealogy book of bojar and princely families, whose contents would later be used in the creation of the Barchatnaja kniga, one of the most extensive genealogy books in Russian history.
In the book, Cypletev writes, "From German lands came Ratša. He had a son named Jakun. Jakun had a son named Oleksa. Oleksa had a son named Gavrilo. Gavrilo had two sons: Ivan Morchiňa and and Akinf the Great. Akinf had two sons: Ivan and Fiodor, the childless. Ivan had two sons: Aleksandr and Andrej Ivanovič Kobyla..."
Except the book makes a slight error (it was fashionable at the time to have a foreign ancestor), as Ratša was not from Germany but instead came from Kyjiv, there's entire lore about him as well, but you can check this out for yourself.

...it is pure fiction written by Greeks. The Bulgarian title Bolyar, is written with an "l". It comes from the Bulgarian word "bol" which means "big" and "plenty", as in BOLshoy or izoBILie. The Greek usurpers of Moscow could not pronounce Bolyar, so they changed it to Boyar. That's how you know the "chronicles" are fake.
The actual "Romanovs" are Greek oligarchs who bought and bribed their way to power. "Romanov" is actually anagram for "romei" (meaning Byzantine Greeks, still used in Greece today). Their dynasty is full of Greek names which were very exotic in Moscow, at the time. Names like Theodoros, Evdoxia, Aleksios, Dimitris, etc.

@@user-kb2no8yg1o I am not sure why some Russians are horrified of their own heritage and desire to be something other.
Americans, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders all respect their English founding culture. Russia and Ukraine seem to have problem with accepting theirs. Tragic and sad.
Is this a race issue or inferiority complexes?
There is no "prestige" in Europe or trying to be more European. The continent is named after a Greek woman. Europe is ruled by Greek oligarchs who originated from Asia Minor (modern day Turkey). I will contest any idea of European "prestige" and "superiority" over my own heritage.

No, not at all. Romanov means son of Roman. It was common for many of Slavs to take there father name as there surname (alternatively there surname could be based on there job). As such, for many centuries surnames would change whit each generation, but over time Slavs would stop whit that practice.

The Rurikids were originally the rulers of Ukraine from Kyiv. They were descended from Swedish Vikings. After the fall of Kyiv to the Golden Horde (Mongols), one Rurikid prince founded the City of Moskva on the Moskva River. Prince Yuriy Dolgorukiy was the Price of Rostov-Suzdal on the borderlands of the territory of the Kievan Rus. He transformed this principality into the independent power that would evolve into early modern Muscovy. Strangely he was half Anglo-Saxon (his Mother was Gytha of Wessex, a daughter of Harold Godwinson, who was killed at the Battle of Hastings by William the Conquerer.)

There never was no such thing as "Rus". Modern Russia is spelled Россия (Rossiya) with an "o". Sometimes the "o" transitions into an "u" for ease of pronunciation as in русский (russkiy - Russian).
The Greek word "Rosia" (Ρωσία) was brought by the Greek Merchants the Romanovs (anagram for Romei - meaning Byzantine Greeks). It comes from the Bulgarian word "рожь" (rozh' - rye; offspring; red hair) which was a nickname for the Kievans.
It is pronounced similar to the French "rouge" but with an "o" not with an "ou". Our Greek neighbours do not have this sound "ж" and replace it with "s".
About 350 years ago, the Romei (Byzantine Greeks) merchants, the "Romanovs" subverted the Principality of Moscow and changed its name to "Rosia" (Ρωσία). They also renamed the medieval Bulgarian language spoken there to "Russian".
