Watt was definitely very sturdy and durable, in the chin, jaw, and skull department. He Did get cut up quite easily though. Although he was periodically nailed pretty good by Arguello, Watt also made him miss quite a bit, with Arguello's various punches, especially the booming right hand/money punch that Arguello possesed. Alot of missing and grazing punches from Arguello. Watt took the flush landing punches like an iron jawed warrior. He gave a game and valiant effort but I think it was simply a matter of a Strong Tough guy fighting a Stronger Tougher opponent, who also punched with nearly twice the force.
I was a kid watching this I remember Watt was supposed to lose to Howard Davis and he prevailed. Sean O'Grady was also supposed to beat him and didn't....Arguello had slashing punches which caused cuts and Jim had facial skin which cut easy,but he bravely lasted 15 rounds....4 title defenses very respectable

I watched every fight Arguello fought that was televised. I was a big fan and thought he was a great champion. I also thought he was so precise and economical with his punches that his fights were sometimes boring…until he decided he could drop the hammer.
Great sportsmanship at the end, and throughout! Watt was never going to set the world on fire with his style but he did defend the world title successfully three times (albeit in a poor lightweight era). Went on to have a successful boxing commentating career after with Reg Gutteridge at ITV too, kept his money and his marbles intact, well earned in the toughest sport!

Jim Watt was a good champion and he beat Olympian Howard Davis which was impressive in this era. Needless to say to also go the distance with a big puncher like Argüello was not an easy feat!
Unfair to say Jim Watt made his defences in a poor Lightweight era. The man was a world champion and fought the best of his era. Jim had a total of six world-title fights, which includes winning one world title and four successful title defenses. He won five of these fights and lost this one of course to Arguello.
Watt fought mostly to survive. How two of the judges only had Arguello winning by 4 points is insane. Arguello dominated the entire fight, was fresh at the end even, while Watt was a bruised bloody mess.
This fight was the beginning of Arguello's decline...He was never the same fighter after this fight. He was still Alexis but ...something was lost. No mortal ever really beat Alexis not even Pryor... it was Father Time that finally got him...RIP Champ.
I remember this fight clearly …Jim Watt a highly intelligent fighter and a late developer had his work cut out because Arguello was such a big fighter…..the other thing l remember reading about was Jim’s training camp was orthodox and he sparred about 100 rounds before this fight but Arguello sparred less than 10 rounds but but but. Alexis had done hundreds of rounds on hand pads which were a new and novel thing back in the late 1970s….the pads had got him razor sharp and ready without any pain and the sparring Arguello did was just to get him in the mood …..Arguello was a great but Aeron Pryor beat him and he was only smallish at light welter but seem to think he may of had some chemical help ….might of remembered that bit wrongly …

Loved Alexis & respected Watt. To take on Howard Davis, Sean O’Grady & Alexis consecutively at the end of your career, got to respect that. Those were 3 tough opponents he didn’t avoid. That being said, I found this fight on the boring side. It just seemed to be a battle of jabs with an occasional power punch once in a while.

His commentating at times is questionable - Benn v McClellan comments at the end dissing McClellan when the guy was having a major brain bleed, and also dismissing Pacquiao after the first Morales fight saying 'we've seen his best' referring to his win in the Barrera fight, as though it was a fluke and that was as far as Manny would go. Manny reached heights well above that after his first loss to Morales.

His commentating at times is questionable - Benn v McClellan comments at the end dissing McClellan when the guy was having a major brain bleed, and also dismissing Pacquiao after the first Morales fight saying 'we've seen his best' referring to his win in the Barrera fight, as though it was a fluke and that was as far as Manny would go. Manny reached heights well above that after his first loss to Morales.
