Highway 99 Tunnel Program - Keeping Vessels Moving During Construction

The Government of B.C. is moving ahead with the replacement of the George Massey Tunnel to make your travel faster and more reliable. Building a new eight-lane tunnel in a working river is a complex process. As part of the planning process, the project team created real-time navigational simulations to demonstrate how vessels will safely navigate the Fraser River during tunnel construction.
A navigation simulation uses a three-dimensional model of the Fraser River to simulate how vessels would navigate the river under different conditions. For the purposes of the Project, the simulation modeled the temporary navigation channel detours that will be required to build the new immersed tube tunnel, while allowing ships to move through the area safely.
