Can you please add an autofocus speed test in your next reviews? I think that AF speed in some cases is almost as important as sharpness.
Well done video. I own the Tam 150-600mm G2 for Canon and would rate it number one. I believe this G2 version will be my next purchase. You have nailed the most important issues.
I have the Tamron it's lovely. It does back focus a little but for wildlife it makes no difference just static subjects.. lovely lens. I use it on a d850. I would imagine it's brilliant on any body. It was fantastic on my D7200. No doubt the canon lens is brilliant.
Hi! I'm guessing you'll be looking mostly for corner to corner sharpness in those landscape shots, and you can get a very solid image at 2.8. Stopping down to f4 will give you a little more sharpness maybe but nothing huge, so I'd say the sweet spot in practical usage would just depend on what you want for depth of field. Chromatic aberration isn't an issue and vignette can be corrected easily in post as well. :)
Hello Scott, let me get this right when we use a wide angle lens we attempt to shoot with an aperture between f/11 to 16. But with the this Tamron 70 -200 mm end set at 200mm set it at an aperture of f/2.8 for a front to back sharpness for a sharp landscape image. Is that correct Scott ???
Allan Davies never said front to back sharpness and that’s not what you originally asked. Front to back sharpness will depend on the distance of your subject and won’t be specific to this lens, but true for any 200mm lens. The “sweet spot” of a lens usually refers to the best aperture for its optimal sharpness. Depth of field (front to back sharpness) isn’t really related to the sweet spot. Depending on the scene you’re shooting front to back sharpness is probably near impossible at 200mm anyway, (unless everything in your scene is relatively far)
Honestly, both haha... although the 24-70 is probably more useful for street and events compared to the 70-200. For portraits I'd like something a little longer than 70mm though, personally, and the 24-105 may be a good all around lens. Not the widest aperture, but it can kind of do it all.
I'd say the G2... it's a solid solid lens and the zoom will be much more useful in those settings. 135mm will probably be too long for a lot of moments especially if that's the only lens you have.
This is a great lens for sure. On a crop sensor camera like the 90d, it will be cropped to the center of the image so effectively the 70-200mm becomes like a 112-320mm. If that's a little long for you, you could also consider Tamrons's 24-70mm f2.8 (which would be effectively a 38-112mm). The Tamron lenses work very very close to as well as the Canon versions though, sometimes even out performing them depending on the generation, but cost a lot less. I'd highly recommend them :)
Is the Canon that cheap now?? Wow, in that case, the Canon is a great value for sure. Tamron too, of course- I'm assuming you're talking about a used Canon vs new Tamron?
@@ScottDumas got an offer used canon 2.8 is v2 for $800 pristine condition. idk if to get it or the v3 pristine condition too for $1500..yes tamron is $1300 brand new in where i live

Randy Ruiz Thanks so much! :) I would personally recommend the Tamron- it's a seriously amazing lens physically and optically. My biggest complaint is those switches (get switched off easily when carrying on a strap at your side) but there are a handful of workarounds for that. You won't be disappointed!
Hi! I didn't have a chance to test the extenders with this lens (only with the 150-600) but I can pretty much guarantee both the IQ and AF will suffer at least some. I imagine it would still be useable though if you really need the extra reach, however I wouldn't count on the autofocus for subjects with a lot of movement.
For a 70-200 I'd definitely recommend this one. If you're looking for something longer, I've never used it myself but heard great things about the Canon 100-400mm. If you're not sure you need the extra reach you could get away with the 70-200 and cropping depending on the body you're using, or use it together with an APS-C body to get more "reach" with the crop factor.
I'd pefere a new Tamron with 5 years warranty. Canon service messed with me, telling my lens couldn't be repaired due to lack of spare parts. They just wanted me to spend 2000€ for a new lens.
Although the sharpness and CA etc are comparable, why you may buy a Canon vs. Tamron is weather sealing and reliability. I accidentally dropped my 70-200 on wet flooded concrete and after simple cloth drying the lens continued to work without me panicking on an out of state project. So keep that on your radar if you shoot professional shit happens. That's why I keep investing in Canon glass reliable and excellent customer support.
Absolutely the same here, the Canon is definitely tried, tested and solid in every way. If money isn't an issue I'd always recommend something with a solid existing reputation.
They're both very good, but Tamron is cheaper. Canon is proved to be tough and last years without any future compatibility worries though. I think you'd be very happy with either, but of course hand holding a long lens with the 80D crop will not be easy for video. I'd recommend a monopod or tripod as well.

Hi Scott. Thank you for this review. I had the opportunity to test Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 G2 (on Canon 6D) and compare to Canon 70-200 f/2.8 IS II. Their AF motor speed are at the same level, but I notice that Tamron every time need extra 0.3-0.5 of a second to confirm focus (focus locking). Have you also notice this issue?
Hi! Thank you for watching! I will soon be posting another video specifically about AF and/or include the information in my final review (I haven't decided if it's worth making a separate video or not haha). I did find pretty much exactly the same thing as you though- there was a slight hesitation at the end with the Tamron that caused an extra fraction of a second compared to the Canon which just locked on straight away.
That is great to hear Scott! I am actually in doubt between the Canon and the Tamron. I am based in Europe, and here the price difference isn't that big (2.100 euro's vs 1.600 euro's). Because I do a lot of sports photography I think it is a no brainer to get a new grey market 70-200 IS II for 1.670 euro's from Hong Kong?
Loïc van de Walle That's a really tough one haha... I guess it comes down to how you feel about buying grey market. I got my Canon used and love it- testing the tracking speed (video coming soon) I found that the Canon worked better on my mark IV. I'm a little bit surprised though because other people seem to be having no issues at all with using the Tamron for action/sports. I think it will definitely just come down to how you feel about grey market, but that would be a great price for the IS II.

Scott, I was also suprised. I also notice that some people report no issues with focus locking (no hesitation). Maybe we just get defective copy?
I wonder... my lens was perfect as far as accuracy and consistency so it doesn't seem like it could be defective... I'm curious, which body did you use it on? Someone told me that they heard there were issues with the 5D IV in particular, especially related to the AI servo mode. I'm actually super confused what to say about it so still deciding how to put the video together haha. On one hand it gave no issues in One Shot mode, and many others seem to have no problems with AI Servo/tracking... but there was a visible difference when used side by side with the Canon... maybe I'm just being too hard on it? I'll get some sample images together and probably just put it out there and let the viewers decide without much comment myself on that point.
Thanks for the great video! Would you recommend the Tamron 70-200 or Canon 70-200 for video? I am trying to get full body length video with bokeh on Canon m6 II, and I think I need a telephoto lens, with a lot of space. Everyone raves about the Canon, but new they are quite expensive. Any recommendations? Thanks again!
Hi! It might depend on the camera for things like AF performance, but in general the Tamron worked well for video too. I didn't test them overly intensely for video performance though, so not sure of things like focus breathing etc.
Haha yeah, people hate on it sometimes for like (literally) a hair of difference in sharpness. There's no way that any difference would be consistently better or worse on either of these because nearly no one shoots these in a laboratory :-P
I gave the sigma version to my kid bro after 2 weeks use!i could live with the noisy focus and abrupt breathing of the lens!I will surely buy the G2 version this christmas since its about as fast and sharp as the Nikkor version!
I have the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-EL and its amazing, works together as a trigger and can even control settings on Elinchrom. I would definitely recommend it! :)

gokhan tek Thanks for watching! I'm really glad to hear that :) Don't forget to check the description for some image samples and links to the lenses if you're interested in purchasing them :)
gokhan tek Through reviewing the lens I shot a lot at 70mm and 200mm (and some in between of course) and I did find that in some cases, especially on the long end, the Canon was sharper but I also found that it wasn't noticeable enough to make a difference. The Tamron is wonderfully sharp throughout the range, the difference in sharpness with the Canon is in no way worth the extra money (unless you want the Canon for other reasons as well). I wouldn't get too caught up on very small %'s of difference here and there- they're both winners :) Also- the files available for download are all full resolution so you can zoom into 100% and see if the Tamron is sharp enough for you. They're jpegs but if you import them into lightroom or check the file info you should be able to see the focal length. A lot of the files have the focal length in the name as well. Hope that helps!
Tamron is really good and 97% performance compared to nikon counter part..this all because of nikon's camera auto correction on capture.. In case of canon its different.. Better off canon lenses for canon cameras..
You say the sharpness is comparable, but it sure looks like the canon is orders of magnitude sharper based on the cropped and close up images. Other reviewers same story, whats going on here?
The Canon is definitely a bit sharper, but only barely. I think after a certain point it just becomes overkill and the Tamron is definitely much beyond the "very sharp" level. The Canon is no doubt still an incredible lens, and the one that I own myself, but it really is only side by side at 100% where you can tell the difference. Looking at the Tamron only I don't think anyone would ever think it needs to be sharper than it is, so in that respect they're comparable. Not equal, but more than close enough.
Scott Dumas thanks for the reply! That all makes sense for sure. I also downloaded the images and can see some of the major differences I was seeing was just slightly different focus points, and the Tamron is way better than I gave it credit for.
I wouldn't say much sharper, in most cases it was very close for me. No doubt the Canon sets the benchmark here, but I think the Tamron held up well and even pixel peeping into the raw photos it wasn't a huge difference.
@@ScottDumas for the financial reason i'd go for the tamron. no question (just an amateur) but for professional shootings i found the differences on your shots more zhan noticible...
So the Canon is better, but not hundreds of dollars worth better. Also, since my 24-70 2.8 is also a Tamron, the controls on the Tamron 70-200 will be the same for me, rather than turning in opposite directions.
Welcome back! :) The Canon is a seriously tough competitor, but I was really impressed with the Tamron. I think it will come down to money for most people. Which point(s) did you think was strongest for the Canon?
Haha yeah- People love the Sigma Art series for (sometimes) cheaper 3rd party lenses, but I honestly much prefer this new line of Tamron lenses (as far as IQ goes). I do already have the Canon, but if I was deciding for myself it would be a very hard choice! Price price price lol
Very true... there's a certain comfort that comes with brand name (usually)... glad to see the 3rd parties are becoming more reliable and better options though :)
If you can’t see a difference you need to go and see an optician. I have watched loads of reviews over several years and you are the only one to basically slate the cannon. There is only one benefit to the Tameron and that is price. You totally negate the build structure and materials used in both and the optical specs. You also don’t even mention industry opinion. Hay ho each to their own and as you said this was NOT a true technical review.
I'm not sure what reviews you've watched "over several years" because the Tamron was only released less than a year ago. Of what I've seen several, if not almost all people who reviewed the G2 Tamron say optically it was nearly on the same level. If you've had and used both I would imagine you'd see the same. As this was an IQ video, of course I did not mention the build structure or materials, I have a separate video on that topic and on top of that only time will tell how well the Tamron lasts. As I mention in my build quality video, there's no doubt the Canon is time tested and proved to last and it is the lens I own myself after all. I never claimed otherwise. Even IF the one benefit is price, if everything else is within small percentages of difference, there are a LOT of people who would rather save the money (or have no choice but to go with the lower priced lens). I don't think anyone who cares about industry standard is going to be watching TH-cam reviews to decide if a Tamron or Canon is the better lens, I think you're missing the audience for this one. I also never claimed it was a scientific review, but it was a fair side by side comparison based on how the IQ stacks up in real world situations. All the images were shown and even available to download so people can make their own judgements, but I don't think I misled anyone with this, sorry if you felt it wasn't an adequate review (of IQ).
Sherab, i own a d850 nikon. This means i cannot use the canon lens, however to say the price is the only reason you would buy is laughable. The Tamron lens is very well balanced lens. i have taken some incredible photos. I have used it professionally for publications in London. It performs to professional standards, from someone who shoots for a living not a youtube aggressor!
Thanks for the great information , now I can recommend tamron to my friends, and I can consider buying tamron, thanks very much, you may don’t know how your information benefited me, god bless you .. 🤍💖

Hello Scott, if shooting a landscape image at the 200 end what would the sweet spot aperture for this lens. I thank you for your time in advance ...
Hi! I'm guessing you'll be looking mostly for corner to corner sharpness in those landscape shots, and you can get a very solid image at 2.8. i am confused .. which lens should i buy 24-70 or 7-200 for my street photography , portraits and events ?
Honestly, both haha... although the 24-70 is probably more useful for street and events compared to the 70-200. For portraits I'd like something a little longer than 70mm though, personally, and the 24-105 may be a good all around lens. Not the widest aperture, but it can kind of do it all.
Short and Precise!

G2 or sigma 135 art? For portrait ,events and weddings?
I'd say the G2... it's a solid solid lens and the zoom will be much more useful in those settings. 135mm will probably be too long for a lot of moments especially if that's the only lens you have.
Sigma art lenses are lovely
What about focus speed?
Hi, i want to buy canon 09d anf this tamron lens being normal photographer. So it is good for me ?
This is a great lens for sure. On a crop sensor camera like the 90d, it will be cropped to the center of the image so effectively the 70-200mm becomes like a 112-320mm.
Anyone who says the Tamron cannot produce professional images like the Canon isn't a professional or they cannot use a camera/lens competently.
I think you'll love it! This is easily one of Tamron's best lenses at the moment :)
wutchu recommend for illuminometering?sekonic or other brand?
I have the Sekonic LiteMaster Pro L-478DR-EL and its amazing, works together as a trigger and can even control settings on Elinchrom. I would definitely recommend it! :)
sounds cool!got a nicephoto 600watts battery flash with some yongnuo 622n triggers!going to take pix of falling leaves which I will throw and put it on 1/4000th of a second!do you have any vids with that litemaster and use of it?
just saw a video of it!dang thats a lot of control for a 500 bucks controller!a little monster!do u also use skyport trigger with it?
Please add IS test!
I like this video very much. Helped me a lot when I decided
gokhan tek Thanks for watching! I'm really glad to hear that :) Don't forget to check the description for some image samples and links to the lenses if you're interested in purchasing them :)
I heard that the canon between 160 mm and 200 mm is sharper. Do you have a chance to test it?
gokhan tek Through reviewing the lens I shot a lot at 70mm and 200mm (and some in between of course) and I did find that in some cases, especially on the long end, the Canon was sharper but I also found that it wasn't noticeable enough to make a difference.
Great video. Thanks Scott!
Thanks so much for watching :)
Tamron 70-200G result is softer on 90D
At 1:50 the tampon is sharper
lol
Thank You Thank You So Much I Realised more😀❤️ Love from India
You're so welcome!
you just earned a new subscriber
good Work
Thank you so much! I appreciate it :)
Excellent review!!
Tamron is really good and 97% performance compared to nikon counter part..this all because of nikon's camera auto correction on capture.. In case of canon its different.. Better off canon lenses for canon cameras..
pro tip: the canon 80-200mm f2.8 L (magic drainpipe) is online for less than 400 bucks. no IS but sharp as a tack. save your money!!
Tkx, it stays at 2.8 at 200mm right .?
Thanks for watching and sorry for the delay in my reply! It does stay at 2.8 throughout the whole range :)
Houcine Sinaceur yes
Awesome, glad to hear the photos were helpful! :-D
I was purchasing this already but subbing for Japan representation (Okinawa here).
Awesome! I've always wanted to visit Okinawa. How long have you been there?
Great review!
Thanks so much! :)
Great Review. Thanks!
Thanks so much for watching! :)
Tamron is nice and and at $800 well under 1/2 the cost of the Canon
for a second, i thought it was tony northrup
Shutter Leaf Haha really?? I never thought of that but you're actually the second person to say that in the last couple weeks.
+1
How?
the little brother of ??? TONY!
Haha, I've heard that before! I'm not sure I see it myself but there must be something there since more than one person has mentioned it :-P
i might be weong, but on direct comparison the canon lense seems to be much sharper...
+Erik Jensen exactly! At a certain point it’s a big price jump for very little extra quality. I love the holy trinity from Tamron for the price
@@ScottDumas What's the third lens in your trinity? A 50mm 1.8?
@@ErikJensenDetroit usually the wide, mid and tele... for Tamron that would be the 15-30 f2.8 G2 to complete it :)
thank you !!!
Fantastic. Best video ever.
wow..great one man..subd!
Thanks so much! I appreciate it! :)
I likes ur video ...thanx man
My pleasure, thanks so much for watching! :)
Just found you Scott! great content! I am also a TH-camr I have 4,300 subs. where are you from?
Hey, thanks for finding me! :) I'm from the US but living in Japan... how about you?
Ya i am back again haha.😂😂😂
Canon💪
Welcome back! :)
The Canon is a seriously tough competitor, but I was really impressed with the Tamron. I think it will come down to money for most people.
Which point(s) did you think was strongest for the Canon?
2 lens allmost same to same not too much difference.. but money is too difference.. but canon is brand lens and some time canon beat tamron thats it.
Haha yeah- People love the Sigma Art series for (sometimes) cheaper 3rd party lenses, but I honestly much prefer this new line of Tamron lenses (as far as IQ goes). I do already have the Canon, but if I was deciding for myself it would be a very hard choice! Price price price lol
ha ha price price is main fact. but third party lens and brand lens..
brand is brand . brand is expensive..
Very true... there's a certain comfort that comes with brand name (usually)... glad to see the 3rd parties are becoming more reliable and better options though :)
Love the vid hate the hat>>
hahaha :-P I'll take it
I like
If you can’t see a difference you need to go and see an optician.
