    Hi Mynda, thanks for your great content! You could also reverse the roles from Excel and PowerPoint. In stead of pasting your dashboard in PowerPoint, you could just copy / paste your PowerPoint slides in Excel. Every slide in its own sheet. Turn of gridlines - formula -bar and hide the ribbon and make the slides as big as the screen. No one will see the difference. Only drawback is that there are no slide animations, but who needs those when you have a live dashboard?

    Thank you Mynda, great tips. You could also embed small excel exercises in a Word document. One point for attention: if you switch from PPT to Excel during presentation: be aware of the settings with dual screen. If you don't practice this (at home you don't have a beamer but a second screen can do) this often causes some hickups. Same is true for youtube video's in PPT.

    Great video. Embedd as a picture can be useful because it means the dashboard will not change but you probably need several static slides. If up to date data is needed then I put a link on a slide to open the dashboard in excel and switch apps.

      Thanks! Yes, I agree, better to just insert an image and then switch to Excel when you get to that section of the presentation.

    You can actually re-size the embedded Excel by dragging the gray dotted border whenever you are in editing the file. I do this for very simple editable tables with Excel's conditional formatting.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can, but the size doesn't stick. Once you click out of the edit mode, it reverts to the truncated view.

    • @latedayJM
      @latedayJM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyOnlineTrainingHub We must be doing something different from each other then. I am able to freely re-size embedded Excel Sheets based on my needs. I do this on a weekly basis. I can adjust the "window" to show a 9 x 9 grid of cells, or 4 x 6, or 2 x 12. And my sizing sticks. I have not once had to re-embed my Excel due to a wrong size.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wonder if it's because the size of your Excel area is smaller than mine. My dashboard takes up the full 1920 x 1080p area of my screen, so I'm thinking that is exceeding the limit of what PowerPoint can embed. IDK, just guessing based on experience.

    • @latedayJM
      @latedayJM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyOnlineTrainingHub Yeah. You probably are exceeding the limit of columns that can be made visible in an embedded Excel. In this video you can see how re-sizing works : th-cam.com/video/9jfRPbIwY2Q/w-d-xo.html
      And this solution seems to indicate there is a rather small size limit for columns in an embedded Excel answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/excel-object-in-powerpoint-2013-resizes/3c17b99c-8b27-44bc-b9e5-5b72315216ee (you can embed any Excel, but there is a limit as to what is visible)
      I love your videos by the way and have learned so much from them.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I said in my video that you need to build your dashboard to fit inside the limitations of that bounding box, which typically isn't ideal for a dashboard, but it might suit some.

    I'm experiencing this "chopping off" the right side of an embedded sheet which is really frustrating. The other options don't work for this specific need that I have as I need someone to double click on the Excel object, update values in a table in the spreadsheet and then have the view of this data show in Powerpoint. At least good to know that it's not my configuration or actions that are the cause, a material limitation in Powerpoint getting in the way.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Glad my video explained the problem. The solution is to make your dashboard smaller so it fits inside the area PowerPoint defaults to after you exit out of edit mode.

    • @graemegourlay2850
      @graemegourlay2850 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyOnlineTrainingHub Thanks for the idea. Unfortunately in this case this solution presents usability issues as the content is used on a screen to present to an audience and with the amount and when downsized becomes unreadable. This one is a definite constraint in the Microsoft suite interoperability.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub

      I would share the Excel file with them and use workbook protection to guide them to the relevant parts of the file they can interact with and protect the rest. Or use Power BI and share the reports securely using the Power BI service.

      You can use Excel Web App to embed the dashboard in a web page: www.myonlinetraininghub.com/interactive-excel-web-app-dashboard

  • @Jakeu1701
    @Jakeu1701 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can also link the charts to the PPTx without embedding the excel file. As far as the charts being cut off, if you double click again and open the embeded file, you can then resize and move the viewable area. I used to embed until I found a way to link the charts. The file size drops like a rock when you just link. I prefer linking the charts instead of linking as an image as the charting I have do not line up with the PPTx format (I suppose I could change that) and if I someone else needs to make a change in formatting, display of callouts or axis range, you do not need to have access to the original excel file.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jason, I agree, the first example I showed was a linked picture in PowerPoint. The problem when embedding dashboards is that they are typically large and the embedded area size in PowerPoint is limited. So, while you can double click to resize the viewable area in an embedded dashboard, there is a limit to how big this can go, and often it's not big enough for a dashboard, which is why it appeared truncated on the right hand side in my example. Mynda

    Excellent video. It's very annoying that you cannot interact with the slicers in presentation mode. I have a large Excel table one slicer that I want to embed in PowerPoint so we can interact with it during the presentation by changing the slicer. Is there no way to do that?

    I don't get why you'd want to embed a dashboard on powerpoint in the first place. Mine typically use a vba macro in excel to zoom to selection (being the dashboard area) to ensure the user sees what i want them to see regardless of resolution etc, and just hide the tabs, headers and ribbon.

    • @MyOnlineTrainingHub
      @MyOnlineTrainingHub  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, Andy. Embedding the dashboards in PowerPoint is a bad idea, but plenty of people want to do it!

    • @TSSC
      @TSSC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Embedding creates a copy that isn’t linked to the source. With this comes the risk of the files not being in sync. Especially important to consider if the data (not filters or slicers) is added or modified in one of the files. I’d stay away from embedding. Perhaps the Fluid framework will solve this.

      You can't copy and paste a Slicer on its own, instead you have copy the whole area of the dashboard including the cells the Slicer is sitting above and then embed the Excel workbook in PowerPoint, as shown in the last example.

      ==> Then an Excel logo shows up and by double clicking it's opening by itself in a specific window. (sometimes the sheet is too large and you prefer hiding it...)
