Wondering when this was filmed? and is the area that was a lake just a dry lakebed now? I had read elsewhere that the lift scene took place at Lake Lure in North Carolina. Do we know for sure?
When you have a chance, you should look into the geology of the lake. It's pretty fascinating. Evidently, it has years were its full, like the time the movie was filmed, but in other years, it's mostly dried up.
In terms of filming, a lot of the filming took place here, but there were also many things filmed at a summer camp in Lake Lure, North Carolina. The practice lift itself was filmed in Mountain Lake (it was actually fall by then, they had to spray the leaves green and the water was frigid), but the other filming from that scene (including the log part) was done at Lake Lure. Lake Lure was also where they did a lot of the indoor scenes like the main ballroom, the sheldrake hotel, the dance studio, etc. Also, the staff cabins, the famous staircase, Johnny's cabin all at Lure.
