We Pulled a 1958 Chevy Impala out of an OLD GARAGE! (1958 Impala Rescue)

  • The 1958 Impala is a fairly uncommon car to find anymore, so when one pops up on Facebook Marketplace less than 30 minutes from my house, we have to go buy it! This '58 impala is originally a two-tone black/white car with a tri-tone black, gray, & turquoise interior. This car would have been very sharp back when it was new. Thankfully, it was kept inside and out of the elements so its not a total rot box. It is missing quite a few parts and pieces, but the car exists and that's the important thing.
    Thanks for watching!

These old vehicles that you restore are part of American history. Thank you for preserving a part of America that would otherwise be lost.

When I was 9 I had an assignment in school to write a short essay on any subject I liked. I wrote my essay on.. the 1958 Chevrolet Impala (true story). I think it was supposed to be like 3 or 4 paragraphs and I wrote 6 or 7 going on and on in great detail about how one day I hoped to own a ‘58 Impala convertible, red with a white top, and how it would have a 283 with a four barrel, etc, etc. I was smitten, then, and still get the warm and fuzzies whenever I see one. Something about that trio taillight arrangement..
Anyway, I really enjoy the channel, good luck with the ‘58, and keep up the good!
    Brian.

    Excellent good find. I have a 58
Impala. I bought it in 74 right after
American Graffiti came out fell in love with Toads 58. Had to have one for myself. It was my first car.
    Found one after looking
for awhile. Hard to find even back then. Today I still have it restored in my garage with a powerglide tranmision ( turbo Glides were junk) and a 348 tri power engine.
Couldn't sell it now, it would be like cutting my arm off. It was red with a white top when I bought it but now it's all white. ( of course) Price back then a cool $200 bucks!!

      Perfect specs. !!
I was born in 58. My uncle had a 4 door 58 with the 6 cyl.
Actually the American Graffitti 58 was Ron Howard's, and Toad was to take care of it for him. I forget Ron's character name.
And, sadly, it was small block powered.
Love that yours has the wedge fire 348!!

      Hi Harold
      Well Cool Man!
I was born in 59. Yes I know Ron Howard's character's name was Steve Bolander some of the hot rod guys around here call me that. I did pick up a 59 2 door Bel Air sedan back in the '80s when things got bad at a farm auction. Had a 6 cylinder in it and 3 on the tree. They said the engine was blown but it actually just had a bad coil. Got it for $130 bucks in real decent shape.. Drove it for about a year and sold it for $500.....wish I would have kept it. But I had my eye on a 74 Nova Spirit of America hatchback. I bought it and ran it til I got married in 81 then sold it. Wish I would have
Kept it also....but they were just cars then. I have since picked up another 74 Nova...Just a 2 door coupe it shares the garage with the 58 Impala.( never sold it thank God) I think my friend we
Grew up in one of the funnest times in history the '70s and '80s was a bitchin time to be alive.... could have done without the Disco! Craze though Right?

We had a Biscayne 4 door 6 cylinder auto growing up. A drunk driver in a 59 Cadillac hit the 58 sitting in front of our house and only bent the bumper into the tire but hit our 50 F-1 pickup and tore the fender and wheel off. All my dad and neighbor did was pull out the bumper and it was drivable.

I was born in 1951 so late fifty early sixty I started to really notice cars. It was easy to determine years and makes in those days because of vastly different styles from year to year. When we found out new models arrived at local dealerships we would always go at look at them through show room window. I always preferred 59 chevy when I was younger but now I appreciate the 58 a little more. I have great stories from youth in both years. Thanks for finding these gems.

Love the '58 Impalas! I've had my original paint Sierra Gold hardtop since 2004. Amazing how the '58 and '59 body styles are radically different. Went from a rounded body to a paper airplane. Who would think that owning the exact same car just one year apart would be like owning two completely different cars. Can't do that with today's cars. Hell, cars today look the same as 10 years ago. Speaking of my '58 -- I found a very nice original dash pad out there in south central IA and had the whole dash removed and shipped to me here in PA. Probably the nicest used original '58 dash pad in the world. It refinished nicely and is now in my unrestored car. It seems that out there in IA is where it's at.

Actually tend to lean more towards the base cars as there was ALOT of gingerbread trim on the Impalas.
    Keep digging 'em up!

Nice to see a black one, not another red or coral example. It's really change in the formula of building fins from horizontal to vertical, altough in '58 they were yet so modest that they kind of disappeared in side view. Especially with no cove-specific two-toning like on Pontiacs. Good to hear it is in knowledgable, yet cold hands of Ryan now :)
There is one interesting piece of styling that is left from '57, the molded hashes beside headlights on front fenders, filled with trim on Impalas and left bare on lesser models.

58 model's brought chevy out of the dark ages. In so many ways. You can drop a 454 big block with out a sledgehammer side engine mounts. Transmission cross member in the right place . Shocks attached to the FRAME. Outer weel houses. O let's see coil springs all around. FIRST lmpala. First big block. The most beautiful stirring weel and interior. when some try5er tries to put me down and says his car is great .I tell them right away. In the fall of 1956, the 1957 Plymouth ad stated "Suddenly its 1960". Apparently Chrysler Corp. did not like what they had lined up and moved up the car that was going to come out for 1960. As stated the one year only body for GM was pretty costly since most cars in that period were on a three year rotation. Coming from small town South Dakota in those days I never saw a real 58 Impala until after American Graffiti came out in 1974 (l loved that car in the movie). I bought a 58 Impala model in 1974 and painted it like the move (still have that model today). It seems that movie started to generate interest in these overlooked cars. Before then the focus was all 55-57 Bel Airs and 62-64 Impalas. It took awhile for people to truly appreciate the 58-61 Chevys. The people who liked these cars early on got some good buys on these cars.

If that were not an Impala, I'd say that it's only good for parts. But thanks to the 1973 movie "American Graffitti", showing Ron ("Opie") Howard driving around in that beautiful white '58 Impala, '58 Impalas have ever since been unforgettable! Therefore restore it! Paint it white! Maybe George Lucas may want to use it to film "Still More American Graffitti."

I found it somewhat odd that GM scrapped most of the tooling from '58 to '59, but brought back some of the features in 1960 from 1958. With that, left the 1959 year of impala being the "odd ball" but the best choice for impala in my opinion.

Personally, I like the '58 Impala better than the "tri-5's", and the fins on the '59's and '60's were too extreme for my tastes. I am NOT knocking anyone that prefer any of the one's I mentioned that don't "touch me" like the '58. To each his own is my motto.

Same X frame from '58 to '64. 1958 Chevy and Pontiac had 1 year body, but Buick, Olds and Caddy were same body 57-58.

1958 was a one off car. Chevrolet built cars in 3 year sets at the time meaning for 3 years they used the same sub body with different sheet metal, The 1955,56 & 57 used the same sub body but the 1958 was an orphan.

I like the shorter 'greenhouse' on the impala, but don't really like the wider fins and skinnier trunk lid necessitated by the three taillights.

In 1959 the more upscale the car in GM, the more vertical the fins. Chevrolet = Horizontal. Pontiac = Canted. Cadillac = Vertical.

GM was a little late to the fin party. Mopar already had the beginning of fins in 55. When Vergil Exner designs were introduced in 57, the public went wild. Everyone wanted fins. I think most of the 58 GM line was passed over because they looked out dated.

58s have their fans, but I much prefer either the 57 hardtop or the 59-61s. 58s were just overdone in my opinion, maybe that's why they were one year onlys?

  • @SuperCommando60
    @SuperCommando60 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I luv the '58 GM lineup...all of them. own a caddie, but fav is the Bonnie. so much style, trim, presence and 1 year only. Mopar pulled a fast one, and were able to do it because basically all the 57 Mopars, except Imperial, are the same car...same glass, cowl, firewall. GM copied the basic idea where the cars all shared the expensive stuff...bit more a difference between the long wheelbase and short wheelbase cars than Chrysler,

I'm a Ford guy, but IMO both Ford and GM got butt ugly in '58. Of the Big Three, only Chrysler/Mopar was putting out good looking cars that year. First year twin headlights were legal in U.S. which didn't always improve the looks, and sometimes detracted (think Corvette, T-Bird). GM righted their ship stylewise in '59, it took Ford two years to look cool again. Can't wait to see shop lit up!
