The end of this movie hits me really, really hard. Professor X is much more a master of his emotions than I was. That moment when you first realize that you can't use your legs is, in my experience, absolutely terrifying. He is clearly upset and scared, but he handles it really well. I was a lot younger than him, but I absolutely freaked out. They had to sedate me so that I wouldn't inadvertently hurt myself even worse. I always had a special appreciation for Charles. A superhero in a wheelchair was an important bit of representation to me as a fan of superhero movies.
I appreciate the grace and poise it takes to go through such a difficult life transition. Albeit more slowly, watched my mom do so over the last couple of years.
Never understood why he wasn't ever seriously considered for Bond. Suave, can speak multiple languages, has stone cold eyes, and most importantly, is a damn good actor
That was a great scene and acting performance from Fassbender(hell the whole series was filled with great acting from him), especially the line "You could say I'm Frankenstein's monster and I'm looking for my creator." And he would make a great 007.
Charles using Cerebro for the first time sent chills down my spine Also The Coin scene became so iconic and such a brilliant moment and the best in the movie. Micheal Fassbender is a phenomenal actor and was a great successor to Ian McKellen
Kevin Bacon was born to play a super villain. Not only is his power (a tuning fork that absorbs energy) great, personality-wise, no other villain has come close to matching his unique sense of creep factor.
Yes, Alex Summers is Scott's older brother, and his codename is Havok, able to create powerful plasma blasts but has difficulty controlling them. Scott's power is similar due to their relationship. Azazel is Nightcrawler's father, which is where Nightcrawler gets the teleporting, and Mystique is his mom, hence the blue skin :P I always loved Banshee as a kid, I thought that was such a cool superpower to create hypersonic screams
In the comics the summers family is the most complicated in the entire universe, his dad is a space pirate he has a 3rd brother named Gabriel and he's superman level powerful, cable is his son sent to the future to get a cure to virus that causes that metal half body, cables daughter is the mutant messiah, and cables mom is a clone of Jean grey, and Scot is actually older than Alex. Scott and Jean have a daughter from an alternative future that has been erased from the timeline but Rachel is still in the current time line.
Magneto is by far the most intriguing villain. What drives a villain, their motivation and why is what makes a good villain. Ultimately Magneto sees mutants as the final stage of human evolution. Professor X strives for coexistence with humans despite their fear and hatred of mutants while Magneto knows all too well what humans are capable of. My favorite line of Magneto from the 90s tv series; Make peace with the humans Charles? They can’t even make peace with themselves. Truer words were never spoken, even to this day.
That’s why I’ve always been on the fence about X-Men and the other Fox properties going to the MCU. Fox have often given us a more realistic take on the world, and normal people’s reaction to people with powers. They hate people with powers and superheroes, but in the MCU they love them (at least in terms of the movies.) so I don’t know know how they’ll do it, especially when mutants have often been stand-ins for the disenfranchised.
But Erik isn't right either. Mutants are every bit, if not more, capable of what humans can do. Getting rid of humans won't solve anything. It's just more genocide. There will always be another war, be it between mutants or something else.
@@Kayoss13212 In the MCU, there is some divide. If people with powers were uncritically loved, things like the Sokovia Accords (signed by over 100 countries) wouldn't have happened. It also doesn't mean that something can't happen to change how those with powers are perceived.
This one began life as a Magneto Origins film but after Wolverine Origins tanked they retooled things a bit & made an origin story for the whole team with some extra emphasis on Magneto.
Any concept can work fine with the write actor, director and writer. I mean who would have a thought a whole Joker movie without even seeing Batman in it would work, most studios would reject that concept outright.
@@hamzah5643Joker worked because it's not a DC comics Joker representation. They used the names Joker, Wayne family, Arkham Asylum to get the studio and general audiences to watch a movie about mental health. Taxi Driver and King of Comedy are the inspiration for that movie, not anything from DC comics.
I love that a couple decades of comic book movies has provided, in more broadly digestible form, the massive universe, fantastic powers and emotional storytelling that used to take years of comic book reading to grasp.
@Dayspring blah blah blah. You sound goofy af pretending like reading hundreds of issues of a comic is anywhere as easy or cheap or available as all of these movies are. Get serious nerd gate keeper.
Don't worry about calling Scott by the wrong name. The Hulk is now known as Robert Bruce Banner, because Stan spent an entire issue calling him Bob Banner despite his name being Bruce. I'd say you're in good company.
There was also the early issue of Spider-Man where he was, I believe for one panel, "Peter Palmer." Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had a little trouble with Dr. Watson's first name, too.
@@anthonyleecollins9319 Same thing happened with DC Comics, Two Face's name was Harvey Kent on his first appearance, it was changed to Dent to avoid confusion with Superman's adoptive parents.
@Dayspring She started off talking about the previous X-men title that she reviewed. In that one she called him Steve and posted it before realizing her mistake. So this video started with an apology for her mistake. She hadn't seen this movie yet.
not sure if someone has already commented this but the scene with wolverine, the look of surprise on their faces is genuine. it wasn't scripted, Hugh improv'ed the line so they genuinely were surprised when he told them to "get lost"
In the comics, the loss of Professor X's legs was caused by an obscure villain named General Lucifer. It is usually made to be Magneto in adaptations, which works much better--even more than "streamlining" the mythology, it adds a layer to their dynamic. Lately, people have begun to resent Charles for "respectability politics" but if the man can be so even tempered, even open-handed, with the one who took away the use of his legs then he can be forgiving with humanity at large. Every conversation they have, they know that card is there, so voices aren't raised, and arguments have to be at their most objective and utilitarian.
In the comics banshees daughter was siren who made a cameo in x2. When the soldiers were going through the house siren used her sonic scream to wake up everyone in the house giving the students a chance to escape
7:11 You've already met her, and just recently. Do you remember Wolverine's former girlfriend's sister who was being held hostage by Striker in X-Men Origins? The blonde who turned crystalline in defense, looking like diamond? That was Emma Frost, as is this.
Their father is Christopher Summers, he is now called Corsair, Captain of the Star Jammers. They are Space Pirates. He and his wife got abducted by aliens called the Shiar, the Emperor D’Ken. When Alex and Scott were children, they were forced to parachute out of a plane when their parents were abducted. Scott suffered a concussion and that is why he can’t control his optic blasts.
I noticed Michael Fassbenders natural Irish accent slipping through a few times in this movie. It doesn't have a negative effect on his performance though, I still love this film
Alex Summers (a.k.a. Havok) is Scott's younger brother in the cómics. But here, his character was reinvented, because otherwise it would not fit in the timeline.
They did Darwin so dirty in this movie. His power is literally to adapt so he can survive ANYTHING so he should have survived Shaw. Dude could even adapt to survive in space without man-made protection! That being said, this is easily one of the best X-Men movies IMO, so well written, so well shot, a fantastic cast...I'd like to see Marvel bring back as many of the X-Men from this as they can when they debut in the MCU, but especially Lucas Till as Havok and (somehow) Edi Gathegi as Darwin.
I love this movie. This is probably my second favorite movie from the franchise (you’ll get to my favorite soon 🙂). James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are absolutely fantastic as young Professor X and Magneto. They are just as good as their older counterparts if not possibly better. Kevin Bacon was also fantastic as the villain. He’s often overlooked as comic book movie villains go but he might be my favorite villain from all of the X-Men movies. I can’t wait for you to continue this series.
Simon Kinberg proved that he can do a better job as a producer than as a writer In fact, he was the one who pitched Matthew Vaughn to direct this movie, after seeing KICK-ASS
Great reaction, as always! This is easily one of the top 3 X-Men movies out there, and I just wanted to say, that casting two real life friends as Eric and Charles (Fassbender and McAvoy) really takes things up a notch, as they showcase a natural, instant connection. Not to mention the fact that both guys did an amazing job as individual actors.
I just love it when we get to see Ollie! He's really a beautiful dog, and coming from a guy who rehabilitates abused and neglected dogs who will be euthanized unless I can help them through their trauma, I REALLY appreciate it when I see someone treating their dogs lovingly and appropriately, like YOU just did. I also can tell you're a good dog parent by the fact you have that fantastic pillow in the background with his wonderful smiley face, obviously specially made. I see a lot of broken dogs, so I LOVE it when I see that you're so good with yours, and that he is clearly healthy, happy and loved, the way ALL dogs should be!
I felt like other TH-camrs who watch this movie fail to notice that Charles calls Erick, Hank, several times during the submarine in the air part. I feel like I'm one of the only people who noticed that when I saw it theaters.
"Steve" is close enough. I mean, in the comics, Stan Lee originally had his name as Slim Summers, but in a later issue he forgot and called him Scott. They made Slim his nickname to explain it. (Similar to how Bruce Banner became Robert Bruce Banner because in one issue Stan referred to him as Bob Banner.)
Alex Summers is Scott's older brother in this... in the comics he's the younger brother. They explore this somewhat in the film X-Men: Apocalypse... though that movie is terrible. One other significant relationship that they don't really hint at at all (other than the fact that they look so similar): the parents of X-Man Nightcrawler (the blue teleporter from X2) are Mystique and Azazel.... at some point between X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past I assume those two hook up but Mystique abandons the child to some German monastery, probably thinking it best for the child given her current lifestyle of terrorism and living and on the run with Eric. They don't explore this at all in the films, just hint at it. There's that scene between Nightcrawler and Mystique in X2. And then in DoFP... pay attention when Mystique is looking through some photos of old teammates... she does get more emotional when she gets to the photo of Azazel.
One thing about the X-Men movies is that when they're good they're some of the best superhero movies ever made. X-Men(highly underrated), X2, First Class, The Wolverine, Days of Future Past, the Deadpool Movies, and Logan are all good/great.
I love watching your reactions, and when I saw your dog with a tennis ball in his mouth, I just wanted to grab him and give him a big squeezy hug. I hope he does more cameos in future movies.
What an awesome reaction! So excited for the next one (Days of Future Past, which is one of my favs too). Can't wait for you to see it!. Can't wait to see how they incorporate Xmen into the mainline MCU. I think Havok is the older brother to Scott (or Steve if you're a ture Addie fan). Last;y, your dog is definitely seeing something out that window (maybe I watch too many horror movies).
Cyclops's other mutant power is identity theft. Yes, this is absolutely one of the best. The character development and back story is legendary. For all of the amazing ones in this movie...My favorite scene is with Wolverine. Short and sweet.
28:45 "Are these more . . . comic-like, I wonder?" The color scheme definitely is. In the comics, the suits were traditionally yellow and blue, yellow and dark blue, or yellow and black. (This blue-to-black shift may have been a systematic transition over time, but I'm not enough of an expert to know.)
Azazel and Mystique are Nightcrawler’s parents, just like how Magneto is Quicksilver and Wanda Maximoff’s Dad. Emma Frost, the blonde, is Scott Summer’s ex girlfriend too. The lore behind X-Men is absolutely fascinating
Talk about perfect casting. Charles and Erik played perfectly by the leading men. My only issue was Hank, my all time favorite mutant, but didn’t think he was cast right
I'd argue the casting isn't wrong for Beast, the writing is. Nick Hoult could definitely fill the role, but the characterization the script gave him is just too bland to work.
24:45...these are DEFINITELY more true to the comics. What amazes me is how well they managed to make that jump. Thanks for sharing your reaction with us!
A really great soft reboot to get the origin story closer to the comic books. This reinvigorated the X-Men franchise. Can't wait until you get to Days of Future Past. The single greatest X-Men movie of all time.
I love watching all of your reviews. this one stands out because of your dog coming in and out waiting to play with you and wanting to go outside . especially with the ball in the mouth lol.
Late to watching your reactions to these, but really enjoying them. I feel like with the amount of time they had, they did a great job of detailing the relationships formed by them all, Magenato and xaviers bond can be really seen and felt with the scene where he teaches him how to find joy and not just anger in his powers. Btw your dog is adorable;)
One of my top 5, sold me on franchise reboots after X3 and Origins disappointed. Perfect casting for young Charles and Erik and everyone else does good work too, taking full advantage of a setting where civil rights activity was at an all-time high. And indeed, the costumes are much more true to the comics.
In the comics, Alex is actually Scott's younger brother. In the movies, it's the other way around. This is because the producers and writers didn't want to have too many characters that had been in previous movies and wanted to have most of the characters be ones that hadn't been seen yet. Also, the older woman that Raven/Mystique turned into in the bedroom scene with Magneto is actually Rebecca Romijn, the actress who played Mystique in the first three Xmen movies.
When you are going to watch the next one Days Of Future Past , try and find the longer version that's called " The Rogue Cut " it really is a better movie, if not then you will just have to watch the Theatrical cut of the movie. And maybe see The Rogue Cut some other time and see the difference, I enjoyed your reaction to this one 👍
This is my favourite X-Men film (though Days of Future Past is a close second). There are so many amazing moments, but I in particular love Magneto killing the Nazis in Argentina, turning the satellite dish and lifting the submarine, as well as the training montage at Charles' House. The score for those moments is sublime, Henry Jackman knocked it out of the park.
- My personal thought of a very defining moment in Magnetos character is from a different movie, where he goes into the woods to find his child, and the series of events that follow with the soldiers who were sent to bring him in having discovered his true identity. That moment was a crucial moment in defining who Magneto became for the future.
Please also start watching Daredevil because it's the best superhero show ever made and I'm sure that you're going to love Charlie Cox performance as Matt murdock/Daredevil
You get more Wolverine in the First Class sequels. They are Fantastic too. Also, Erik has such a tragic story, you haven't even seen the he'll his story becomes. And, in a way, they redeem the Phoenix story arc.
Rose Byrne is an amazing actress - I'm glad she was in this film. I'd love to see Addie react to some of her other films in the future, i.e. Spy, Instant Family, Like A Boss, Peter Rabbit 1 & 2, etc.
Addie, be sure the next film you watch is 'THE WOLVERINE'. It would be a shame if your skipped that one before 'Days of Future Past', as it leads into it.
Moria is supposed to be Scottish even though she is played by an Australian actress. The actress does a good job playing the character even though she do a Scottish accent. The red teleporter is Nightcrawler’s father.
Havok in the comics is actually Scott's younger brother and like his brother he can shoot energy beams too but he shoots them out of his wrists instead of his eyes they changed things in this movie. Also in the comics Beast did look normal to start off his hairy blue form came later as his mutation progressed.
I remember liking this movie a lot and it has a lot of great moments too! One of the movies that I regret not watching this movie in theaters!! You’re gonna LOOOOVE the next few X-Men related movies!!! Great reaction, Addie and you didn’t called Scott “Steve” in this one! :D xD
Ahhh can't wait for you to react to Days of Future Past! First Class and Days of Future Past are my favorites in this "Slight Reboot but not really" sequel hahaha
Azazel (the red teleporter) and Mystique are the biological parents of the mutant Nightcrawler. You saw Nightcrawler in the second X-Men movie, attacking the President in the beginning.
Interesting enough if in the comics, Beast was always going to end up looking as he does now. His actually in a slow and constant state of changing. The serum just fast tracked it. In the comics he eventually looked more catlike.
There was a time in the 90's and 2000's when X-Men and it's various spin off titles, solo titles etc were Marvel's biggest money making franchise even eclipsing the Avengers and Spiderman. I remember growing up in the 90's it was everywhere; and Wolverine don't get me started, there couldn't be anything Marvel related that didn't have some X-Men presence including Wolverine, Storm and Rogue becoming members of the Avengers main team alongside Captain America and Ironman.
Addie, 2 of the characters in this movie are in the 1995 movie, Generation X , a movie about the Xmen's second junior team, , their first junior team the New Mutants had a movie in 2020
The Emma Frost character was also in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, she was Kayla’s sister that they rescued from the facility with Scott and the other kids. She even turned into her diamond form during the escape. The continuity is crap in all the X-men movies so the timelines are all off, the Emma Frost in this film should probably not even be born yet. Also, Alex Summers (Havok) is Scott’s younger brother in the comics but Fox made him older in the films.

Stan did that a lot in one Spider-Man story doc Ock called him Superman. Stan said DCs lawyers were probably on vacation because they didn't sue.
Might be the fact I'm a big history buff but this was always my favourite of the X-Men films, was looking forward to seeing you reaction to it
Alex Summers is Scott's older brother in this... in the comics he's the younger brother.
The story and the cast (esp Michael F & James M portrayal of Magneto & Charles X) was fantastic, excellent movie 👌🏾
The Wolverine is next in the release date.
Cyclops's other mutant power is identity theft. Yes, this is absolutely one of the best. The character development and back story is legendary. For all of the amazing ones in this movie...My favorite scene is with Wolverine. Short and sweet.
For the record, Shaw is now Schmidt.
@@DragonbIaze052 I’ll give you that
I think Nick Hoult did an ok job as young Beast but the casting of kelsey Grammer as old Beast was perfect.
24:45...these are DEFINITELY more true to the comics. What amazes me is how well they managed to make that jump.
Thanks for sharing your reaction with us!
Probably my fave X-Men film...plus "Days of Future Past" which I'm sure is on your list. This prequel cast is fantastic!
Addie, you should really watch the Rogue Cut of Days of Future Past. It answers some loopholes
A really great soft reboot to get the origin story closer to the comic books. This reinvigorated the X-Men franchise. Can't wait until you get to Days of Future Past. The single greatest X-Men movie of all time.
Make sure you do the rogue cut pls
What a coincidence it’s James McAvoy’s birthday today🎉🎉
I forgot how great the ending was, can't wait for your future xmen reactions. 😄
I love watching all of your reviews. this one stands out because of your dog coming in and out waiting to play with you and wanting to go outside . especially with the ball in the mouth lol.
If you didn't pick up on it, Moira is the one attending to the body Charles moves to at the end of The Last Stand. "Hello Moira." ".... Charles!?"
Late to watching your reactions to these, but really enjoying them. I feel like with the amount of time they had, they did a great job of detailing the relationships formed by them all, Magenato and xaviers bond can be really seen and felt with the scene where he teaches him how to find joy and not just anger in his powers. Btw your dog is adorable;)
for more Hugh Jackman as Logan, don't forget the movie The Wolverine.
Make sure you watch the Rogue Cut of X Men Days Of Future Past…so much added information
The difference between Origins and First class is huge.
This movie is one of the many reasons why I prefer the X-MEN over the MCU
Me too
but the X-men are about to join the MCU
@@marlonclark1896 after what they did to Hulk and Thor, no, thank you
@@LeonardoKlotz well that's too bad they're joining whether you like it or not hahahahahaha
@@marlonclark1896 I wonder if you will
Michael Fassbender is great as Magneto in this. The standout performance of the film.
I’ve been a paraplegic since 2001, and I wasn’t expecting Charles’ injury to be in this movie. A bit of a gut punch in the theatre.
24:41 the scene alone demonstrates how Eric would never toss Mystique aside the way he did in X3. Best to ignore that chapter entirely 😂
When you are going to watch the next one Days Of Future Past , try and find the longer version that's called " The Rogue Cut " it really is a better movie, if not then you will just have to watch the Theatrical cut of the movie. And maybe see The Rogue Cut some other time and see the difference, I enjoyed your reaction to this one 👍
one of my favorites of all time. You capted perfectly the escense in this video. good work
This is my favourite X-Men film (though Days of Future Past is a close second).
- P.S. - I was vague on the details on purpose, so you could know what I was referring to, without too much spoilers in the comment.
The Wolverine scene, Jackman improvised the line and threw the actors off and they kept it!
27:43 The older woman that is Mystique turns into is played by Rebecca Romijn, who was Mystique in the first three movies.
:D xD
In the comics, Charles’ legs were crushed, not paralyzed. He uses his powers 24/7 to endure the pain.
In the comics, Azazel is Nightcraweler's dad. Care to guess who his mom is?
Ahhh can't wait for you to react to Days of Future Past! First Class and Days of Future Past are my favorites in this "Slight Reboot but not really" sequel hahaha
The rogue cut add enough to warrant imo
Logan cameo for the win.
I remember growing up in the 90's it was everywhere; and Wolverine don't get me started, there couldn't be anything Marvel related that didn't have some X-Men presence including Wolverine, Storm and Rogue becoming members of the Avengers main team alongside Captain America and Ironman.
grew up watching it and love it
Addie, 2 of the characters in this movie are in the 1995 movie, Generation X , a movie about the Xmen's second junior team, , their first junior team the New Mutants had a movie in 2020
The Emma Frost character was also in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, she was Kayla’s sister that they rescued from the facility with Scott and the other kids. She even turned into her diamond form during the escape. The continuity is crap in all the X-men movies so the timelines are all off, the Emma Frost in this film should probably not even be born yet. Also, Alex Summers (Havok) is Scott’s younger brother in the comics but Fox made him older in the films.
