Zootopia 2 could be the savior of Disney sequels. I'm not saying I guarantee since there's a chance it could be a disappointment but I'm confident in that especially since Zootopia is one of those Disney films that deserves more stories to tell in this world
I got no problems with sequels if they do it right, but the problem here is that they do so many sequels that there doesn't seem to be any room for more original, unprecedented films to reach BO success. Sequels should only be used for original films that have very little room for character depth and expansion. It's time we start innovating again. Show 'em how they did it back in the days.

Zootopia 2, the legendary-famous sequel to Zootopia, it is wonderful and superior to the first Zootopia movie, its plot and story is interesting and its morals are nice, not just delivering the same morals about prejudices that the first movie delivered but also ones about leadership and starting new chapters in your lives, and the premise of Nick Wilde and Judy Hopps going undercover with Nibbles the Beaver’s help to track down Gary the Snake when birds, primates, fish, reptiles and amphibians arrive in Zootopia is awesome, the songs and musical numbers are also great and awesome, I also hope Nick and Judy’s relationship becomes romantic and whether or not Nick and Judy will become boyfriend and girlfriend in Zootopia 2, if not I will be cool with it. The new musical numbers and songs in Zootopia 2 are also awesome, whether or not Zootopia 2 is a jukebox musical film or a musical film with originally written songs. The ending will also decide whether or not Nick and Judy will choose to stay at the ZPD forever as police detectives and a police sergeant in Nick’s case and police lieutenant in Judy’s case or have Nick and Judy become new police chiefs of the ZPD after Bogo is revealed to be a villain and arrested for it or killed in a stupid sacrifice in the climax while Gazelle and striped skunk Diane Floretine also overthrow giraffe FranklinSpots and red ruffed lemur Nancy Redfur current mayor and assistant mayor of Zootopia after Bellwether and Lionheart’s arrests as new mayor and assistant mayor of Zootopia when they are revealed to be villains themselves with Nick, Judy, Gazelle and Diane taking control of Zootopia’s politics and law enforcement and run the city in their fashion or have Nick and Judy resign from the ZPD for good to become detectives and secret agents and spies working in the Zootopia Intelligence Agency or a detective agency run by foxes, bunnies and animal species of all kinds, “The FoxWood Detective Agency” alongside Skye and Jack Savage and at their own Italian restaurant, pizzeria and bakery, “Fox and Bunny Cake and Pizza” cooking and baking the finest cakes, cupcakes, pizza and pasta in Zootopia and with them as its managers and head chefs and bakers and animal species of all kinds are allowed to work as chefs and bakers there. The film is also a massive improvement over the ultra-infamous sequel to Wreck-It-Ralph, Ralph Breaks the Internet.
@@ChristiahTshimanga-x7z I think it's because of POV; I think Disney designs many of it's fantasy stories to be open-and-shut, while Pixar leaves them a bit more open-ended. Plus Disney started doing sequels at an AWFUL time, as they became more focused on "maintaining the brand" than letting proper creativity flow. Hopefully "Frozen 3" and "Zootopia 2" fix this perspective of them.
Four sequels that didn't work, like at all: - Pocahontas II (1998) - Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002) - Ralph Breaks the Internet {WIR2} (2018) - Moana 2 (2024) {lukewarm at best}
@@djpyroteknikz135 To be fair, Pocahontas 2 and Hunchback 2 didn't use any of the same teams and didn't have a budget, in contrast to Ralph 2 and Moana 2, which had at least of the same people returning and a much bigger budget. And while I can't stand them, I do love Pocahontas 2 and Mulan 2 keeping the serious themes (even if the story/music wasn't as good), and I do prefer John Rolfe over John Smith.
Rating other Disney sequels: Good examples of Disney direct to video sequels, midquels, etc: Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (Perfectly good, Forte is a great villain and it further explores Beast and Belle’s romantic relationship and character arcs.) the midquel to Beauty and the Beast. The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, a masterpiece (Though Simba acts slightly out of character in the sequel, now acting like a stereotypical overprotective father to Kiara, but he redeems himself in The Lion Guard.) The sequel to The Lion King. The Lion King 1 ½ : A great midquel film to The Lion King and Timon and Pumbaa are at their absolute funniest in it. Bambi II: The midquel to Bambi, a perfect midquel explores Bambi and the Great Prince’s relationship perfectly. The Tarzan and Lilo and Stitch sequels and midquels, they also all rock! 101 Dalmatians 2: Patch’s London Adventure the sequel to 101 Dalmatians, and Patch and ThunderBolt’s relationship is perfect. The Cinderella sequels, they also rock! The Tigger Movie, Pooh’s Heffalump Movie and Piglet’s Big Movie and A Very Merry Pooh Year and SpringTime with Roo and Pooh’s Heffalump Halloween Movie also all rock!
Bad examples of Disney direct to video sequels and midquels: Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World, Pocahontas cheats on John Smith in the sequel and gets a new love interest, John Rolfe! John Rafficle also appears as its villain again when a new one should have been introduced. Beauty and the Beast: Belle’s Magical World: The midquel to Beauty and the Beast, feels unnecessary, Belle, Beast and Fifi, Lumiere and Cogsworth were flanderized into unlikable characters in the film and its plot feels weak and useless. The Jungle Book 2: An inferior rehash of the first Jungle Book movie, the animation is cheap, Shere Khan was flanderized into an am evil kind of villain, King Louie and the wolf pack are absent which comes off as disappointing and Bagheera and Ranjan’s father were absolute jerks and strict, overprotective and mean-spirited ones to Mowgli and Baloo, and acting petty about the whole Shere Khan and “Being in the Jungle” is dangerous kind of deal. Shanti, despite being a tattletale and getting Mowgli in trouble, Mowgli and Ranjan and Baloo and Colonel Haiti and his troops and the Bander-Long are the only characters who are likable in the sequel. It could have done better. Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp’s Adventure, Scamp acts like an absolute jerk towards Tramp in the sequel and Lady is given a tiny role! The Fox and the Hound 2: The midquel to The Fox and the Hound, the animation is cheap, Tod and Copper joining the Singing Strays felt unnecessary and it lacks proper placement in The Fox and the Hound timeline. Big Mama, Dinky and Boomer are also all absent. But Dixie and Tod and Copper and Cash and Copper’s relationships were also executed pretty well. The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, Yet another inferior rehash of the first movie, The Little Mermaid though Melody is a great character. The Little Mermaid: Ariel’s Beginning, a terrible prequel and King Triton is an absolute jerk in it! The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2, the Gargoyles play an unexpected small role in the sequel. Mulan 2 and Peter Pan 2: Return to NeverLand, feel unnecessary from my point of view.
I believe Zootopia 2 has a far greater chance at sequel redemption. It has been worked on for a far longer time, voice work was done earlier in the year and I both see and hear wonderful things within its development. There is a great chance that Zootopia 2 could be a better sequel than what Disney has been producing recently and I hope it all remains true that it will excel at one of Disney’s greatest sequels if they do not make the same mistakes they’ve been making already.
Well, sometimes a sequel can indeed stick the landing. Just as long as it makes something new and interesting for the characters from the previous entry.
I didn’t mind Moana 2, but I think it could’ve done so much better if they made a prequel about Maui and how his parents abandoned him in the ocean, became a demigod bc the gods found him, And him desperately trying to please people by lassoing the sun. Personally I think it would’ve done so good and then they could’ve released Moana 2 afterwards, looking into Moana’s demigod journey
Even if they can work, I think Disney needs to take a 10 year hiatus from sequels, remakes, and reboots. It's all just dull, forgettable white noise that blends into the background, even the stuff that isn't so bad.
@@wizardoferror9942 THANK YOU. So many people use "Disney" as a catch-all term; rarely do I see people using the term just for Disney Animation and not Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm, etc.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 It's a gamble, but I wish Disney would actually set up their sequels rather than on a financial whim (though being financially successful IS important for a business). "Moana 2" did this with a post-credits scene, but not in the way I mean; it's set up as a revenge/blast from the past thing rather than a continuation with a fresh new story. Plus the film itself was meh, so IDK if I'd watch a third film.
@@OpticalSorcerer You’re welcome. Usually not many people realize that Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm work on their projects without Disney interfering. Mostly.
@@OpticalSorcerer I wish Disney looked at how Pixar did sequels. No matter how good or bad Pixar’s sequels were, they at least were sequels worthy of the big screen.
You're right. While most of Disney's past sequels haven't been good, that is not to say that their future sequels can't do better, because they do have that potential. Their next sequel, Zootropolis 2, I'm still cautiously optimistic about, for the following reasons: 1. Unlike Moana 2, Zootropolis 2 was always intended to be a feature length from the start 2. One of the directors of the first film is returning for the sequel, so that's good 3. They're bringing back Shakira from the first film too
The only theatrical disney animated sequel that worked for me is the rescuers down under. The animated sequels can work if they have a story to tell. Disney needs new artstyle. Disney needs to try to create a new artstyle for making their sequels like puss in boots the last wish.
I agree on everything you say man, the problem will always be that this people on Disney only think in MONEY, and so far none of the sequels they have ever produce (with a few, veryyyy FEW exceptions), Disney seem only concern with brand recognition, other than make a good sequel story....different to Dreamworks and Pixar who have made already incredible sequels some surpassing the originals......Disney so far at least in the theatrical run have never done that, and Moana been one of the worst cases of greed and desperation, despite the film not been as bad (a miracle that only can be credited to the animators and talent behind scene that Frankenstein this in a decent way to work somehow), the only sequels we have ever gotten that is as good is not better than the original is in my opinion, TANGLED as Tangled the animated series is actually fantastic, but is a TV SERIES not a film.....Disney need to let the talent actually work in good stories, without the new mandated Hollywood limitations some movies have gotten by idiotic social justice crap movements like the Me too stuff that avoid Li Shang to be a character in the live action remake, you can let that stuff limited the writers, or the women can't be bad or evil like in WISH that avoid the queen to be a bad person and we loss the opportunity of have a Disney evil couple as main baddies, as long stuff like that happen...Disney will always make crap sequels and modern films, this absolutely need to stop.
I actually enjoyed both Moana 2 and Frozen 2. I thought they were quite messy and had too many ideas crunched together, but fundamentally when I saw the next chapter in the lives of these princesses I actually did feel like these sequels were taking them where I thought they'd be.... just imperfectly. Moana 2 wins out for having a more coherent plot, but Frozen has the far better songs.
disney should re-imagining Thumbelina 1994 in CGI animation with sabrina carpenter as the voice of thumbelina, Alex Aiono as the voice of prince cornelius, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mrs toad, Lin Manuel miranda as Jacquimo, Blake Roman as Berkeley Beetle and Sarah Stiles as Mrs Fieldmouse✨🧚♀
What they should do is to not make any sequels that are over capacity, like say a fourth frozen film or a fifth Toy Story installment just doesn’t work and no one asked for it. It’s only fair that most of em could stop at 3 as a fully completed trilogy and save the other stuff for a tie in series instead of another film to follow up. For example I want em to just make a Frozen 3 as the first Disney animation studio to have a full fleshed out trilogy and just stop there, if they want to make room to expand the story and characters more they should save all of that for a tie in animated series (kinda like what they did to Tangled the series, no sequel sadly, but that’s ok to have a follow up series to tell more of her story along her journey, that makes sense) I just think that is unnecessary to cramp so much into one film which is technically what Disney did before with its direct to DVD sequel era (Atlantis 2 and Beauty and the beast 3 were just terrible in comparison to Moana 2 recently) but with a few other examples like Aladdin and LILO & stitch had shows to tie in its sequel line up, I think they can do the same with Incredibles 3 and Frozen 3 (maybe a Moana 3?) to just stop at 3 and move on to animated shows as follow ups so that way Disney will have more room on their release schedule to make more original movies in the near future.
Current Disney doesn't use sequels for "new ideas." They're making weaker rehashes of past successes b/c they're too PC to make any new successes. There's no creative freedom or innovation when you're constantly micromanaged to not be offensive.
moana 2 and frozen 2 have similar endings frozen 2: elsa freezes and becomes the 5th spirit and reunites with anna moana 2: moana got struck by lightning but was revived and became a demigoddess and reunites with simea
Yes, Walt Disney himself was totally against the idea of sequels to his features because they be risky enough to undermine the originals respective stories ine way or another
I feel like he would’ve made an exception for Toy Story 2 though if he were alive during the 90s decade considering John Lasseter’s story of seeing that little boy at the airport excitedly showing a Woody doll to his dad would’ve touched his heart and emotionally convinced him to let a sequel happen. Though of course, it would’ve been made by Pixar straight from the beginning instead of another project for DisneyToon Studios to make a direct-to-video, which those direct-to-video sequels probably wouldn’t have existed with Walt being alive considering his stance against sequels like you mentioned.
@@CinnamonGrrlErin1 Makes sense. At the time, the idea of a continuation would probably be immediately stereotyped as "more or less the same thing" (and may have been).
At least in 2026 we’re supposed to get something original from Walt Disney Animation Studios which is just as well since it’s supposed to be the summer of quintuplet films with both Toy Story 5 and shrek 5 that being said I’m excited to check out Moana 2 on Friday and zootopia 2 next year
there are Disney sequels that I love... so yeah Disney sequels can work... they just need to try, the problem is that they don't try because they know it will make profit anyway
Compared to the first movie, the music was so much worse. Moana is full of memorable music and lyrics but the only thing I can remember from Moana 2 is “I’ll go beyonnnnddd” No other lyrics just that part specifically

I also hope that Nick Wilde will be appearing as the main protagonist of Zootopia 2 while Judy Hopps will be appearing as its deuteragonist so that we could focus way more on Nick and his own backstory, character arc and personality in the sequel because we already focused enough on Judy’s in the first Zootopia movie. I also hope that Gazelle, Clawhauser, Flash, Priscalla, Fru Fru and her friends and family, etc. will play prominent roles in Zootopia 2, and the new characters introduced in the sequel like Nibbles the Beaver and Gary the Snake will be great, I also hope that Gary the Snake or another new character will be appearing as the main villain of Zootopia 2.
I trust Pixar more with sequels than Disney
I mean... yeah fair enough
@@ChristiahTshimanga-x7z I agree. Even Pixar’s most hated sequels, Toy Story 4, Incredibles 2, and Cars 2 had positives.
@@wizardoferror9942Incredibles 2 was more disappointing than hated.
@@waters228_91 Never thought that was true. Thx.
Four sequels that didn't work, like at all:
- Pocahontas II (1998)
- Hunchback of Notre Dame II (2002)
- Ralph Breaks the Internet {WIR2} (2018)
- Moana 2 (2024) {lukewarm at best}
Rating other Disney sequels:
Good examples of Disney direct to video sequels, midquels, etc:
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (Perfectly good, Forte is a great villain and it further explores Beast and Belle’s romantic relationship and character arcs.) the midquel to Beauty and the Beast.
Bad examples of Disney direct to video sequels and midquels:
Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World, Pocahontas cheats on John Smith in the sequel and gets a new love interest, John Rolfe!
I flipping agree and plus Zootopia 2 is by the same people
The sequels can work, they just need the right people working on it.
Big hero 6 deserves a sequel
There was already an animated series of it. So no need.
Unless you count Inside Out 2, Toy Story 2 and 3, and Monsters University.
Oh wait, those are *Pixar* sequels.
Their next sequel, Zootropolis 2, I'm still cautiously optimistic about, for the following reasons:
1. Unlike Moana 2, Zootropolis 2 was always intended to be a feature length from the start
2. One of the directors of the first film is returning for the sequel, so that's good
3. They're bringing back Shakira from the first film too
Hopefully.. I mean look at Inside Out 2.
There are some good sequels
I actually enjoyed both Moana 2 and Frozen 2. I thought they were quite messy and had too many ideas crunched together, but fundamentally when I saw the next chapter in the lives of these princesses I actually did feel like these sequels were taking them where I thought they'd be.... just imperfectly. Moana 2 wins out for having a more coherent plot, but Frozen has the far better songs.
I really wish that if wish was successful right now they would keep moving forward with more original ideas like Penelope or Bluebeard
disney should re-imagining Thumbelina 1994 in CGI animation with sabrina carpenter as the voice of thumbelina, Alex Aiono as the voice of prince cornelius, Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mrs toad, Lin Manuel miranda as Jacquimo, Blake Roman as Berkeley Beetle and Sarah Stiles as Mrs Fieldmouse✨🧚♀
Correction: NOT ALL sequels can work. Lol
DreamWorks, Sony & Illumination: Try us
I knew they would work!
I cannot believe how Pixar is part of Disney but still puts out better stuff then them
Current Disney doesn't use sequels for "new ideas." They're making weaker rehashes of past successes b/c they're too PC to make any new successes. There's no creative freedom or innovation when you're constantly micromanaged to not be offensive.
Well, we didn't really give them much of a choice, now did we

moana 2 and frozen 2 have similar endings
frozen 2: elsa freezes and becomes the 5th spirit and reunites with anna
moana 2: moana got struck by lightning but was revived and became a demigoddess and reunites with simea
I could be wrong, but perhaps even in his time, sequels were associated with a lack of creativity and cashgrabs, ruining their reputation up to now.
@OpticalSorcerer even back in silent film days, sequels almost never got the same numbers as the original

Pixar sequels may be hit or miss, but either way they even make sequels better than disney.

Compared to the first movie, the music was so much worse. Moana is full of memorable music and lyrics but the only thing I can remember from Moana 2 is “I’ll go beyonnnnddd”
