You would think with the presence of an optical connector, that everything could be squirted down one cable.
@@paulmurgatroyd6372 The TOSLINK protocol unfortunately does not have any means to transmit data other than PCM audio. It leaves no "room" for any additional information. The optical conductor could of course carry much more information (as could every standard copper cable, really), but interoperability with other devices makes it impossible to implement such a thing. Optical was really only chosen because of electrical isolation.

Please don't ever change your format. I love the fact that you take your time and explain all the details. Your videos are always so fun to listen to in the background of whatever I'm doing, and I'd hate to ever have them change!
One reason why I love this channel is because with every video it's like walking into a museum exhibition and leaving it a little bit wiser and educated. As a child of the 90s, I missed out on so many of those things, either because nobody around me had technology like that (barring an occasional classmate), or because it was just too expensive for me to purchase (after spending it all on a Nintendo 64 and a cheap Aiwa HiFi set).
Please continue what you're doing, Matt, and ignore the blokes who probably also wander into the British Museum while proclaiming loudly all the time what the bloody point of it all is :)

Don't listen to the few people complaining that you take too long to get to the point. The vast majority of us are here exactly for that, and love the backstory and humour!
Exactly, I like watching Him talk and show random or odd technology and often moaning about it, hence the name.
I run an independent record label. When we produce CDs, we deliver the disc contents with a DDP file, which is basically an archive file containing all in one place: the audio "image" data, the CD text information, and if applicable for enhanced CDs, another image file for the CD-ROM data. The CD text can include more metadata such as the CD's UPC code and the ISRC codes for each track. Most CD manufacturers seem to prefer the DDP format because on their end, there's no room for errors-- the DDP will produce the disc contents the exact way we exported it. Because of this, I'm pretty shocked to hear that there are CDs being produced by major labels today without CD text, as the DDP format basically makes it standard procedure. Some CD pressing plants like DiscMakers even ask for the track titles and seemingly will put the CD text onto the disc whether you ask for it or not.
took me years and years since knowing txt data can be on them, to find a way to burn it on my own discs. but. I managed to do it. in the mid to late 90s. the holy grail for me would be to have an external display to show as many or as few characters at once from the disc. many players only have a tiny width.
Toast on the macintosh side of things was the first app that allowed it in my world.

My favourite band, Midnight Oil, finally released a new full-length album last year. It's called "Resist" and was released by Sony, so it has CD Text. When I play it in the CD player in my van, the title shown is "Show Of Hands". Apparently this was a working title for the album, and the phrase survives as a lyric in one of the album's songs. So CD Text can also be a fun source of bloopers or easter eggs like that.
I'd say blooper. Somebody didn't provide or get the title change in time before the discs were made. That's if they even noticed it at all.

Oh Mat, don't let guys like " Mr. Get-To-The-Point " ruin your day. I for one always leave here feeling entertained and educated. Over the years you've introduced us all to golden nuggets of retro tech and the like that we'd have never seen or heard of anywhere else. I always look forward to a new video because I'm almost always presented with something I've only ever heard about or know nothing about at all. Before I wrap this up I just wanted to offer my condolences on the loss of your mum. It's hard losing a parent no matter what age we are. Thank you and take care of yourself.
Even if you want to just "get to the point" you still have agency in your role as a content consumer- you can just skip to the end of the video or skim it. What a strange criticism of this channel.

@@hoshimaruhajime7933 trust me, I know some people in their 40s or 50s who aren't capable of typing a coherent sentence. I'm sure there are kids who are quite coherent. It's not always about age or maturity, as some people are just good at reading and writing at a young age, while others just don't comprehend it.
For reference, I'm 42-years-old. I communicate via telephone, in person, email and documents at work all day long, and receive lots of communications from various people.

Always love new episodes whether it's something I know of or, in many cases, stuff I have never heard of, but always interesting and many many many times I would end up finding more information or bring back memories..... Just one of my favorite channels hands down. Please don't stop doing what you do and providing FUN and entertaining content. 🍻🌎❤️🌮🎶
This channel has many points. It's educational, historical, great for tech geeks, great for reminiscing, etc. And many of us also find it is pure ASMR. This is a top notch channel, loved it for many years.
I could not care less about the Technology in the videos however Techmoan has got Me hooked, I love listening moaning about random stuff.

As someone who used 100s of minidiscs in the entertainment industry, I had no idea this lead existed! Thank you for taking the time to educate us on it. I for one would rather watch your videos than a film or TV. Keep on finding these wonderful bits of tech that we didn’t know existed!
I’m a big fan of minidiscs (I even got the famous last one, the MZ-RH1, with its infamous OLED display), but I didn’t know this cable exists ! Clearly a nice catch !
I must have been younger than sixteen when I started watching this channel, it's over ten years ago. Hearing Techmoan say there is no point to his videos makes me very happy. That's why this is the only channel I'm still subscribed to since I was a child. Very well made video's about something interesting without any pretentions. Thank you so much.
I had always wondered why so many of my CD's didn't have the text displayed when I played them in my car - it seems like such a simple and obvious thing to include, especially since it can be done so easily. Thanks for the info!
Hello Techoman! I just wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for your amazing videos. I absolutely love every single one, and I truly mean it when I say that you don't need to change a thing! In fact, the quirkier your videos are, the better they become.
You went to great lengths to transfer CD Text to a minidisk. It was an absolute gem and, in my opinion, deserves to be part of a digital technology museum. I'm pretty sure that only a handful of people have ever attempted this, and you demonstrated what was truly possible with your ingenuity and creativity.
There is just one thing that I would like to see in your future videos, and that's the return of the puppet. It would be great to see it brought back to life and featured in some of your upcoming videos. Keep up the amazing work, and I'm looking forward to your next video!
My brother’s a musician, and I helped him record a demo CD about 5 years back. I imported the .wav files into iTunes and labeled them in the Library, then burned a master disc with CD Text from the library labels. Next I ripped the ISO* and uploaded that to CDBaby so every CD copy would have the CD Text. It’s something most might not have cared about if it was missing, but it was a nice treat for the crowd playing the CD in their car. :)
*EDIT: This was 5 years ago, so it may have been that I sent them a physical disc to make copies of. Either way, they had a master disc image to duplicate - not a collection of files - so the CD Text of my master copy passed through perfectly.

Audio CDs cannot be ripped to ISO files. An ISO file (short for ISO-9660) is an image of a computer filesystem, albeit one that's intended for use on CDs. But audio CDs don't have them. You can create an ISO file from its contents, but you're creating a new ISO filesystem that contains files that contain a transcoded (albeit potentially losslessly transcoded) version of the audio data on the CD. I imagine that extracted CD Text would be extracted as separate data; it's not intermingled with the audio on the CD, but recorded as a separate track.
@@raginganarchist depends what you transpose to. ALAC is lossless for example.
@@cooliofoolio For audio CD purposes, you should probably use DDP, as that's the standard used by CD replicators.

Each episode is like an adventure down "memory lane" ...even if it's not my memory, it's usually some forgotten gem from yesteryear. I admire when Matt tries to repair whatever he's found, I can relate trying to fix something that's been a hand-me-down or gift or just something I've come across with odd interest like minidisc or laserdisc.
I love the unique content on this channel, and the wonderful community that support it.
Fascinating about the separate cable to transfer the text versus the audio! As far as making a point or not - that doesn't matter! Many people enjoy "spoken word" videos wherein someone talks about things which are interesting to them and a few others. It's a form of story telling which is relaxing to listen to. Any educational content is a bonus, but hearing you discuss something you are interested in is where the value is.

Matt's a smart man and a self-directed, capable adult. I'm sure he doesn't need blubbering, fawning compliments about what he does to put his passions on screen on a regular basis. The introduction wasn't sincere whatsoever, and I hope you can at least perceive that much.
For sure! At this point I'm quite certain the Venn diagram between Techmoan, Technology Connections and Cathode Ray Dude channel audiences is basically a circle!
To me born in the mid-90s when computers were starting to change our tech lives, to see what made sense before things like smartphones, PCs and laptops is something I really find interesting along with other bits of tech featured on here. What makes these often mechanical devices tick is really cool to see. Hell can I argue CD isn't quite obsolete? Sure the form factor has been superseded for the most part in terms of convenience but I think if you've got a nice version of an album on CD, back it up and put it the devices you listen on because it'll still sound great.
Your closing remarks were heart warming. Thank you for providing fun and informative content that can take our mind away from everyday troubles.

I am about 28 years old living in the US and have been following your channel for a few years (I believe I found you through the Prison Tech video - one which I've watched at least 5 times since). I often put your videos on when having meals and always feel that I've spent the time well, learning something about some piece of tech I've maybe only heard about in passing. This is like Saturday morning cartoons to me. I live in the US and wake up to a notification for a Techmoan video and I get excited!
Granted I'm in my mid thirties and am both a tech geek and nostalgic for just about every technology you review but hey I appreciate your videos!!
I once owned a home CD -player that not only had CD-text, it had an internal memory that let you painstakingly type in your own text for non-CD-text CD's. IIRC there was only enough storage for about 100 CDs worth but it was still a fun novelty.
The PlayStation 3 interestingly enough also has this feature.
I think some bang and olufsen units had that feature as well?
My Sony home and car cd players from the late 90's had that, and decent jog wheels that made entering text not too painful. They'd load all the discs so you could look through what was in the changer while a disc was playing, which was awesome in the car.
Had a Phillips CD with that feature. If you lost or disposed of a cd with out first deleting the title you could not remove it from the machines memory short of wiping all titles.
I had a car CD player that did that... Completely forgot about that!
Don't lose your confidence. Your videos do have a point. You're conveying information about equipment and formats. The history of media is always fascinating.
What I admire the most is that this chap spends hours to get and then explain on video the stuff that was used by like 7 people across its lifespan. I am so amazed that I subscribed. I love watching this. And most of all, you can always learn something!

LOL I love your commentary about things not having a point. Sometimes the point is just pure enjoyment, and I think these days a lot of people forget that things don’t need a point to be enjoyed!
Just turned 40 at midnight - decided this video would see me through the transition! 😁 So at 11:50 I pressed play as a "young" man - and by the end I was a fellow "old bloke". Your video's are great and bring enjoyment to millions - as good a point as any for existing 👍
As a mastering engineer, I used CD-text on every master that went to fabrication as a DDP package. Our company used the Pyramix suite for the process, and any licensing was included in the ridiculous (!) price for the whole suite. 😅
Occasionally I used my own Mac to shuffle together a valid DDP (and check the hash), and that was only doable by using the terminal command line. 🤓
So, either expensive and easy, or cheap (ish) and very finicky to make CD-text work. And, the fact that few could read it, many hours wasted, but much learned about the different files making up a DDP package. Archives and preservers will find it useful, I guess…?
Our masters were fabricated across Europe, and those factories wouldn’t have the time for two way logistics - i.e. really listening or talk to us before glass mastering. They just pressed (!) ahead. Any errors would be on me, then…🙈😂
Glad that’s over and done with, but so is the economy of “selling” audio on pieces of tangible assets.

I wouldn't listen to the naysayers. You have 1.3 million subscribers! That's a lot of people that value your content! I don't know what I would do if I couldn't get my weekly Saturday morning dose of Techmoan and VWestlife. No matter what your content it soothes my soul to hear your voices.
Please never stop making videos like these! TechMoan you are a TH-cam favorite of mine! It's fun just to hear your perspective on music and older technology. The only thing I really miss are the puppet videos but I know you already said the Mrs. now uses that room for a home office and that's definitely more important. Thanks for what you do!

I'm an old bloke who likes hearing another old bloke talking about old tech I owned (or at least heard about) from the past. To me these videos are entertaining and informative, and they do take my mind off things (they have been a good distraction over the last few years).
While most 16 year olds don't even care about your videos, me, a 29 year old, cares very much. I'm amazed by how many music formats and appliances for them have been invented so far. There's always something, that still can surprise me.
Keep telling these stories, point or no point. They are interesting, raise curiosity and bring back a nostalgic mindset we are missing. Thank you for your efforts. They are sincerely appreciated.

For me the whole point of Matts channel is that is a living archive, of both useful modern technology, prototypes, obsolete units and the just plain weird. There is a lot of people talking about the technology that got use to were we are now, most of them focus on what they grew up with computer-wise the program software-wise. But Matt gives us a wider range of everything.
i really dont get people who complain about your channel. like what is there not to love about going over wierd wacky and otherwise interesting technology of the day? your channel is part if the reason i got into CD changers, different wave Radios, HD-DVD, etc
even though you don’t necessarily go over all of them, its the mechanism of it and the ingenuity to get it to work to the point of being a product on the market that brought me in. your channel does just that as well “this goes here, pushes this, bob’s your uncle, and I suspect this reason is why it was made” is one of my favourite parts of your videos
your channel is a technology museum and to me that is the best thing ever, especially as a 21 year old who never got to live alongside these interesting machines
I purchased a CD mastering program for my Mac some years ago called DSP-Quattro, and it includes the ability to easily add CD Text during the mastering process. I then had a small run of 100 CDs made for my band's album, and the CD Text worked fine on the duplicated CDs.
A real shame CD text wasn't made completely standard and universal. I have that Marantz CD player you mentioned and question why on earth didn't they add the software to link the text on the CD to the display. And no, your videos never go on too long, I have NEVER skipped through one. I find this old and obsolete stuff really entertaining, VWestlife does lots too - a recent one about buying floppy discs!
I've got the earlier CD6005, very similar unit and display, and that does display CD-TEXT. Maybe they ditched it to save memory so they could add another feature.

My CD5005 displays CD Text. Seems a step backwards to remove it from later models.

If nothing else your channel provides an engaging history of the journey from an analog world to a digital one, highlighting the diversions and deadends encountered along the way. My grandchildren marvel at my audio collection which spans vinyl to lossless digital formats together with the hardware to play them (the only format I've never used is mini-disk). Keep up the good work and take as long as you like not to get to the point.
I love it when CD Text shows in my home and car decks.
When ripping CDs, I make it a point to incorporate as much information as possible into the files, including ID3 tags so as much as possible will be displayed when playing them on devices.
You would be surprised how many of us love and appreciate watching an entertaining old bloke talk about the minutiae that we also care about. Keep up the fantastic content, as always. Thanks

Really missing the puppets
I was under the impression that some WMG albums also still have CD-Text in them. Some of them use it also rather artistically. For example, I'm pretty sure (atleast my pressing?) of Coldplay's "Everyday Life" has. During tracks 9-16, each track lasts 3-4 seconds and each one of these tracks is a bell note playing a piece of what is commonly known as "Westminster Quarters". Everytime a bell sounds, a new letter will pop up on the screen spelling the phrase "GOD=LOVE" and it gives it a rather clever and unique animation effect. Very clever.
if the artist requested it, im sure cd's released by both EMI, Warner and so on, would have cd text on them, if not standard for all releases, then just those specific ones.
Oh the irony of having to buy another MD player just for this video.

If your Sony is just a player not a recorder then I believe it's not the same thing.
No, actually your CD-player reads the total playing time and track numbers and you can then memorise a title for that specific disc in your player. When you play the same disc again it recognizes it and displays your title. The Gracenote, CDDB or other online title databases work the same way to recognize a CD
I think there is a point. The point is learning about defunct tech we've never heard of, or reliving fond memories of a time-gone-by.

I usually think of your shows as little trips down memory lane. Little blasts from the past to when I was younger (or my parents/grandparents were younger in the cases of really old tech). Your show does really well and I’m all the happier to see you.

There's something fascinating about old tech, hearing about the stuff they came up with in the past that never really took off. Some people will always be impatient, nothing one can do about that. Keep up the good work, Mr. Tech!
The placing on record obscure, obsolete and forgotten technology as well as dipping into a little nostalgia and reviewing tech from a "middle aged guys" point of view makes this channels point. Its a great distraction and an enjoyable trip into the past in many episodes, personally I enjoy the reviews of the modern obscure such as nixie clocks or visual displays just as much as the older stuff and its that mix that makes it for me.
I watch and thoroughly enjoy every video you post. This includes subject matter that I would normally be completely disinterested in. Just really enjoy your presenting style and the humour involved. Keep up the good work...
I saw "CD Text" and MD, thought "those are two things I'd be happy to learn trivial information about!" and then spent 16 minutes doing just that. brilliant work
I'm 19 and i wasnt even born for like 90% of the things on this channel but still i love videos about old tech cause its new and interesting (to me) don't let people not liking ur videos get in the way or get u down there are quite alot of people including myself who love ur videos keep up the great work

What a throwback to my youth.
Not only did I end up buying a Sony head unit for the car with CD-Text (and 10-cd cassette).
When I eventually got my first CD-ROM, I ended up spending a fortune in time and blanks to reburn original CD's to get that TXT in the car ...
Ohhhh. The coolness factor it had in my nerdy circles (or so I thought - it was nice, but nobody but me really cared)

This is really fascinating. It occured to me that all of those thing coming together - a CD with text, the player, the recorder, the specific cable - represent a Venn diagram with the smallest intersection imaginable lol. I'd wager that less than twenty people, including your good self, have actually had all of that equipment in one place to try that experiment haha.

I just need the TextCable. I have got the Disc- and MiniDiscman, which could do it. (exactly the MiniDisc from the video, with a working internal Battery) and the shown Discman (but without FM-Radio).
Looked for the cable, but couldnt find it anywhere.... Always wanted to see the CD-Text-Copying in Action...but...Thankfully Techmoan shared the Experience. 😎
I used to dream about this cable, but then discovered that not any CD player was compatible… Also was bummed when realizing my integrated Kenwood system CD + MD was not able to retrieve CD Text data😢Troubled times indeed, the MD was a great format though. It offered a lot more in terms of money saving and portability. Being able to program recording of radio shows for 74 minutes was a real plus. Thanks for the travel back in time, please keep it like this 👌

I thought CD Text was a great invention and made sure all of the CDs that I burned included it, mainly for use in my car but I also had other CD players in the home capable of reading and displaying CD Text. Shame, it didn't become more popular really. No one else I knew was even really aware of it until I mentioned the feature.
None of my burned CDs ever have track names. However my MP3 player is able to display all info and includes album art for select titles.
@@Clay3613 - Provided the CD burning software that you’re using supports CD Text you need to first put a check in the box then either manually type out all of the artist and track names or download them from an online database.
I absolutely love your content!!! I left school in '97 if that matters and I find your videos very comforting. Please don't ever stop, you are sooooo very appreciated, believe me......
