I had the great privilege of being on stage with Birgit Nilsson once and hearing her later again in live concert. No recording comes near the phenomenon of this voice in a large hall. What we hear in this recording is very nice but for me only a reminder of what that voice was. As a musician and singer I am still in awe.

I'd like to say something about Sir Colin Davis. I didn't know he had died and have only just found out. We met in 1980 after he had been conducting Siegfried (Gwyneth Jones, Alberto Remedios et al) all evening at the ROH. He was very friendly, but must have been exhausted. He received his knighthood that year. The first time I heard Birgit Nilsson was when I was at art school at Epsom and the librarian, who knew German opera and lieder well, recommended the Solti ring to me (the Culshaw production). I hope that Sir Colin and Ms Nilsson are at peace.
Madame Nilsson had extremely acute perfect pitch and that can be a problem with instruments whose intonation can vary a good bit during a performance. The intonation of the orchestra is not absolutely perfect.

Nilsson by far is the greatest interpreter of this work. I would second Marjana Lipovsek and Jesse Norman as close seconds
