I guess why the year of shadow seems to be better than the year of Luigi is because of timing. One was in the days of the worst Nintendo console, while the other was decided based on a successful movie franchise. One felt like necessity while the other feels like appreciation.
Not gonna lie the year of shadow feels really underwhelming the only things shadow related are coming out in the end of the year nothing in the early or middle at least Luigi had games the whole year
@@charlieasalgadosalgado1369 I kinda see your point, but then again, Luigi should've had his year in the switch era, and trust me if that was the case, Luigi would've got the biggest W a fictional character could get.
what would YOU rather? taller princess rescuer, or THE ULTIMATE LIFE FORM?
Would you rather jump 1.5 times higher than Mario
Or LIVE AND LEARN
It's Nintendo's fault that the year of Luigi failed, if only they gave this character all the care he deserves it would've rivaled and maybe beat the year of Shadow imo (btw these two are my fav characters in their respective franchise)
Luigi has been glazed so much by Nintendo in the last years it’s not even funny
I feel like the year of shadow was always destined for success
yeah I agree with you that mario characters don't have enough depth to dedicate a year long event of content for them.
though I will say that you forgot Super Mario 3D World released in the year of Luigi, filling the game with little pixel Luigis as well as adding Luigi Bros. to the title screen. (also yeah this makes more sense on a marketting perspective than a quality perspective otherwise most people generally agree New Super Luigi U was a banger and easily beat NSMBU)
as for the fact that it's dlc, NSLU had physical copies you could buy separately but later got bundled with NSMBU. It was such a mess.
@@mynameisntimportant1374 idk man they got some cool moves and the story around them is really awesome and the game is really fun but the lack of characterization is an intentional thing. Mario characters are meant to be more markettable and like a blank canvas, especially Mario. It does make them more likeable but doesn't warrant a year of Peach or a year of Toad or something.
I'd say Wario has the most going for him, genuinely, like warioware and wario land series of games
@@SurfRay not a word that came out of your mount was even remotely close to being right
And all yours claims are based around headcanons that were never stated or even premised especially since you can just admit you never even played the RPGs or are just being delusional
@@mynameisntimportant1374 luigi talks a little bit in the paper mario games, same as super mario galaxy, it's not usually much for characterization and doesn't warrant him enough marketability for a whole year of content based around him. The average person just sees him as a green, taller version of Mario with slightly more personality. He's the equivalent to if we got a year of Tails - not a good idea from a business standpoint. The year of Shadow for Mario would work if it was the Year of Wario instead. You gotta remember they're trying to market to everyone, not just their fans or fans of the character.
To most people Dr. Luigi is just a reskin of Dr. Mario and NSLU is just NSMBU but without Mario. It's not a huge tonal shift like with Shadow or Wario would be to the protagonist.
@@mynameisntimportant1374yes but those are spinoff games, so they’re going to be more overlooked
One is a cow to be milked and the other is the eternal second.
I like Shadow but it must be said: he is Sega's golden goose.
He is the character who receives the most attention and his lore is almost always brought back because it makes fans happy to see him.
Izuka himself really likes Shadow, even wearing a necklace of his during the central sonic.
He is to Izuka what Mario is to Miyamoto in the end.
bro they did almost nothing with shadow for 10 years, gotta admit thats no golden goose
@@radudumitru3306 Shadow was entitled to 4 games which explore his lore including 1 spin-off, appearances in other canon and non-canon media, goodies and merchandise, appearances alongside the main characters, as 1 films, a series , and a whole year dedicated to him.
This is the 4th time we've been fed Shadow's lore in a game.
The first was in SA2, the second in Heroes, the third in Shadow the Hedgehog and now, in this remaster.
The reason Shadow also appeared in Sonic Boom was due to his popularity, the character has always been popular both with Sega and the fans.
Few characters have had this privilege, Silver only had 2 games, 1 of which was completely forgotten (Sonic Rival), The Chaotix only had one and even a character like Tails did not have this popularity (he only had 2 spin-offs and it was during the classic era).
Shadow is also the only non-main character to have more than three Lego sets.
I don't even count games like 006 and Rivals which explores what becomes the character after Maria's death before becoming sad again in Generation
@@Coolmar15 Compare to 006 and rival, rival 2 didn't really stand out for him, seeing is sometimes forgotten.
@@Pan-cackeswho cares. If there’s a character that’s popular, well liked and easily marketable then I say that that opportunity. Your claim rlly doesn’t amount to anything that disproves the success Shadow’s had so far
As a Shadow and Luigi fan. I’m both happy with Shadow’s current hype and marketing and disappointed with Luigi’s failed year 😭
People in these comments sections hating on the Year of Shadow is so funny lol. Hatin' just to hate? Sad ass behavior and so boring. Come up with something new LMAO!
It’s cool. Mario fans aren’t used to taking L’s so they’re just getting a reality check 😂
It's funny to watch the comment replies go to war.
I really like Shadow, however, I prefer Luigi (both as a character and as a year)
But seriously, people in the comments are literally comparing a cowardly plumber to a fearless hedgehog. What do you expect?
I liked Year of Luigi the most because even though it came out during a bad period for Nintendo, it's good. Luigi's Mansion 2 is awesome for me, and you have to admit that even if you hate it, Luigi's character is very well done. New Super Luigi U is a good DLC/Game, Super Mario 3D World was so awesome it got a re-release on Switch (with an extra adventure too), Dr Luigi is fine (Yes, I like Dr Mario's spin offs, cry about it), Mario & Luigi Dream Team is a good spin off. I really like the Year of Shadow too, don't get me wrong. Just because I like the Mario franchise more than the Sonic franchise (I risk being insulted) I still like Shadow. Yeah, there is Sonic 3 the movie, and there is a new game/remake with a new adventure (Sonic x Shadow Generation), however (as another comment said) Shadow is the golden goose for Sega in a way. And in my opinion this year should have focused even more on Knuckles. I mean, for Shadow there is a movie, an extra adventure, a manga, a 4 minute YT series and maybe even more...For Knuckles despite his 30th anniversary they did NOTHING (The TV series is not dedicated to Knuckles except for the name, the protagonist is Wade Whipple) and I honestly prefer Knuckles to Shadow (cry about it). The Year of Luigi would have worked if it wasn't for the WiiU era, which flopped. Despite this, I really like both years and the characters
Luigi isn’t even a coward and he actually can save the people he cares about
Pretty sure the reason mostly comes from two different companies, one actually supporting fan games and listening while the other one goes with what they make the most. So Nintendo didn't provide much for Luigi that year while Sega did alot for Shadow, see what i mean? (Will still watch the entire video eventually but it's an interesting discussion!)
@@stephaniejohnson5361 Cuz Nintendo barely did anything for Luigi whilst Sega actually put more love towards Shadow to make it totally awesome, it's Nintendo's lack of effort and care for Luigi.
@@BasilisGamerHD yeah they take down every fangame that isn’t sonic related and they don’t take down sonic fangames cause of sonic Sammy there is a video about this you can search it’s called “why sega isn’t protective of it’s ip ?”
Shadow simply can't fail this year. In terms of Shadow vs Luigi, Shadow has alot more material for a movie, video game, anime and so on.
Year of Luigi, because guess what At least it actually feels like it lasted a year this year. Most of the shadow stuff is coming out later.
It’s still a failure. Shadow’s year has better hype and marketing. Get over it 😂
It's true that Luigi got NSLU & Luigi's Mansion 2, but Luigi also got 3D World with the Luigi Bros. Arcade mode, Super Luigi Bros which is just SMB1 but flipped, Mario & Luigi Dream Team with the Luiginary attacks, & Dr. Luigi with Operation L.
That a nice way of saying luigi suck while shadow remains being a ultimate badass
Why are people so worked up in the comments it's just fictional characters bruh
Luigi Mansion 2/Dark Moon although no one's favorite Luigi's Mansion game, it sold very well so I think it was entirely the Wii U's fault that Nintendo lost so much money. If Nintendo ever did something like that again with Different Mario or Nintendo Characters, it would probably be a success.
Side note: it would be cool if a Kirby character got a year like that maybe Meta knight or King Dedede, with how much Kirby content we get every year and how much lore the Kirby series has they could easily make that year
I really like luigi he is my favorite mario character of all time but i think the of year shadow is better i agree for sure
this is such a funny comparison to make
It’s true tho. Sad as it is for Luigi, it’s true. I’m also Shadow fan so I’m pretty happy at the same time
It case if there will ever be another Year of Luigi, I hope they do better than the one they did last time
People really tryna cope on be-half of Luigi. Don't get me wrong he is much better in terms of character than his own brother Mario but saying he has more depth than Shadow is more absurd than saying Nintendo is consumer friendly, Seriously one look into SA2,Heroes,SHADOW 05, 06 and you'll see why people have stuck with shadow for 20 years even in his lows
While he doesn't have more depth, they really could've given him a lot more depth during his year. Most likely they're going to do that for Shadow this year for the movie and game anyways.
Also W for the Luigi love he's way better than Mario imo 💀
It also doesn't help that aside from being more cowardly and clumsy, there isn't much else to expand on with Luigi. The Mario Bros already along with the rest of the Mario cast are kept simple and basic for multimedia purposes. Whether it's a mainline game, spinoff, film, Manga, the works. These characters can be used for virtually anything and Nintendo will find a way to make it work.
Spin offs like Luigi's Mansion, Wario Land, Donkey Kong Country, Mario Kart, or even Dr. Mario can easily feature any character as the main star with minor changes to its lore and will work out perfectly. Mario Kart doesn't even need to be solely Mario characters as MK8 and Deluxe proves non Mario characters can still rank in the money if not even more like Super Smash Bros.
@@mikeanthony3300yeah clearly you never actually consumed the franchise to have an opinion about writing
Who invited heroes ?
And Luigi does unironically have the same depth as shadow if not the same motivations
Also sega Isn’t consumer friendly either
I knew there was a connection. People love shadow. Alot of sonic fans are just shadow fans.
And Luigi? Who’s shipping their oc with someone as goofy as him?
Also you sound like Luigi but without his accent
You have no idea how many people do
Also Luigi is houndreds of times more popular than Mario
Year of Sonic predates year of luigi
year of luigi Failed cuz Nintendo did not give a shit but Sega KNOWS people love shadow .also it is already a success cuz SEGA got over a billion dollars
Its not fair sonic got 2 years to celebrite

@@Opiumchao It's one of Luigi's main appearances though. And at the end of the day, almost any game focusing on Luigi would count as a spin off.
@johnathonturner2279 ok that is true but in terms of main console games featuring him there was barely any. Tho as u said any game featuring luigi is considerd a "spin off"

@@GlitchNooob ok? It's part of the luigis mansion series which is a spin off
Joke. Luigi is infinitely better than shadow. In this comparison, it doesn't matter what the company profited, but what fans think. 2013 was the best year of life, especially with Luigi mansion dark moon being the best game of all time. Wii u is a fantastic console for me and many people, but it didn't sell much, especially for marketing. And also, I wouldn't buy shadow generations if it weren't for the movie, which will be very brave. There is no doubt that it is being successful just because of the movie, that's obvious. Without this movie, there would be no shadow. Luigi mansion is part of the main line, and sells A LOT. Luigi number 1.
You have this of always wanting to rival and compare things. Pathetic.
Say that when shadow generations fails.
@@hoonencode2430 yeah you clearly are a Sonic hater if you think that way. Sonic Frontiers did very successfully and contributed to games like these being released. The original Sonic Generations game sold very well and was well received by fans and critics alike. You’re salty 😂

Bro, what about Luigi’s mansion dark moon! Even if you don’t like the game you can admit that Luigi’s character was pretty good in that game, exactly what a game dedicated to the character the year is for. I just wanna say. Seeing all the salty Mario/Luigi fanboys crying in the comments makes me laugh. I initially felt bad for Luigi’s failure of a year but after seeing the bitter comments from Mario fanboys, I don’t feel bad anymore. Keep fuming, I love it. Shadow’s year better 😂😂
Year of Luigi >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> year of shadow
Also sucks how they have this year to shadow and not knuckles
It was never Knuckles'. Knuckles wasn't even much in his own show, so why should this be his year? Not only that, he isn't the start of the next movie nor is he getting insane promotional material like Shadow is. I'm sorry, but it would have been a very lackluster "Year of Knuckles" with the lack of promotion. Sonic Team went IN on Shadow and the hype is deserved from how much they are promoting. The Year of Luigi wasn't even that good and you can't delude yourself into thinking that it had much substance. There's been insane promo for Shadow ranging from Jakks Pacific merc, IHOP menu items, a 3-part anime, a MANGA series, another manga series with the Shadow Chao, a new expansion on a remastered game, the Sonic 3 movie, and possibly more. Luigi's year hasn't even come close. Knuckles's promotion hasn't even touched the amount Shadow's had.
This year isn't about Knuckles, bro. It's not even Sonic X Knuckles Generations, it's Sonic X Shadow Generations.
I really like luigi but he is not close to the year of the utimate life form stop coping
Luigi is better than Shadow 💀 at least Luigi saved brother and his friends unlike Shadow couldn’t even saved Maria
