Having won the Olympic gold medal at Barcelona 1992 and Atlanta 1996, Cuba were looking to become Olympic Volleyball champions for a third time at Sydney 2000.

I had the privilege to see them in person in 1999 and 2000 at the Philippine Manila Grand Prix leg. Together with the Brazilian National Team, we were all star strucked....The Cubans, Russians and Brazilians of this era were one of the most formidable line up ever...

Las reinas del caribe son las dominicanas porque después del 2000 bajaron su nivel.

Good old memories, when they come to the Philippines and i was to young at that time, I'm an instant fan, they are saying that the cubans are rude because of the trash talking, but for me it was a part of the mind battle game, cubans are the Queens of the Volleyball arena. I miss Regla Bell, ruiz, costa, fernandez, and i wish i was able to watch Mireya Luis the legend of the cuban team. :)
Simple... mejor equipo fenenino de la historia... mi papá decia q la única medalla de oro de Cuba en Sidney era la del voli femenino... Rusia ganó los 2 primeros y yo me acosté a dormir... mi papá se quedó viendo el juego... al otro día ne levanto y me dice q Cuba ganó... pensé q era una broma y me reí de él... gracias a Dios... era ka realidad... esa medalla de oro y el salto de Ivan Pedroso en el ultimo intento frente a Jay Taurima... lo mejor de Cuba ...

Yo estaba en una fiesta por la noche por motivos de trabajo(si no no me lo perdia) de pronto se sintio una algarabia desde las casas que paralizo a la orquesta todos querian saber que habia pasado hasta que nos enteramos del noticion, las morenas habian ganado el oro en Signey despues de perder los primeros sets contra las potentes rusas!!!

i am one of their biggest fans from Ambon Mollucas east Indonesia,,yeah, i was grown up with these dream team, at middle era 80's until new millennium 2000, we saw most of greatest female players born in Cuba!from Mireya Luiz, Carvjal, Regla Bell until Anna Fernandez and Yumilka Ruiz, at their best peak, another team very difficult to beat them,, so this day, the young Cuban event lost in qualify for the olympic, Volleyball is still not complete without them, but honestly, the new generation need work more hard, while we saw USA, CHINA, BRASIL, still dominant in new millennium! i missed my Cuban team,,
This Generation of Gold was developed during the 70s and 80s when Cuba was financially supported by the communist countries. Sports was highly supported from the goverment. But nowadays, there is no money to support Sport Schools for children, no competitions or Leagues where they can develop young players. The ones who play the work hard but if you don't have certain conditions and a working support system it is nearly impossible to reach world class in any type of Sport.

Soberbia Yumika Ruiz era espectacular y ese equipo el mejor de la historia.
Ese partido fue épico e inolvidable, lo increíble es que tenían a Mireya Luis como suplente de Yumilka con ese equipo ni Ruso ni nadie que no fuera Cuba podía campeonar.
Y Yumilka quizás es la única jugadora en el mundo que podía reemplazar a Mireya Luis.
Estamos de acuerdo amigo solo y. Ruiz podía ser la sustituta de Mireia la jugadora fuera de serie

+Efrain Herrera I rooted for Cuba all the way, but realized after this, how devastating it was for the Russians. They came so close to winning the Gold on so many editions of the Olympics, but their roster was solid in this one

The fashion of one-piece uniforms started with the Australian basketball team in Atlanta 96, and many teams copied. The Cuban sponsor (Adidas, I think) took a daring step and turned it into this beautiful bathing suit.
By the way, the Peruvian team, which had the same sponsor at that time, wore the same type of one-piece for a while.

Al fin encuentro un comentario sensato y JUSTO : en verdad todas fueron ESTRELLAS. La gente olvida muy fácil la palabra EQUIPO , todas debidamente enfocadas, cada una cumpliendo su tarea en el juego, con un status psicológico sincronizado y de esta forma LOGRAR UN ÚNICO Y FINAL OBJETIVO : TRIUNFAR !!

They were just unbeatable not only because the great players they had, especially Mirella Luis and Regla Torres, but because they were psychologically tough. And with Eugenio George at the helm plus a national pride that simply is not there anymore with the current Cuban athletes.
