Why the Voltron Fandom was TOXIC

  • We know that fandom culture can be bad sometimes. But what about the worst of times? Voltron: Legendary Defenders was one of Netflix's greatest animated series, until it wasn't. And the reason it went downhill so fast isn't a mystery. And for once, we can't pin the blame on the studio execs or the writers.

Yes. Plus they did say that there would be rep. And people assumes that it will be for example Keith and Lance, because of the animation style and some parts of they personalities. And fine. But canonically they relationship was always ambiguous.
And that was a last minute choice to marry Shiro off to some random. There was even a drama about illegal leeks about Shiro's ending. And he was ment to marry some other character.

One thing I have to disagree is needing representation for your show to succeed. You don't need it.
A good chunk of the most well known, liked and talked about cartoons, shows, Anime, etc have no representation and managed to succeed and still stand the test of time very well.
I dunno if the showrunners really made promises to include representation or not, but one thing I noticed from this Fandom and that it is also noticeable in other fandoms, shippers tend to be extremely toxic.

Reminds me of the Shipping wars in Fairytail, FT fans took it far enough to bully and make death threats toward other fans because they shipped characters, it caused so many to no longer enjoy the show because shippers in general can be bitter. I don't think having representation is a solution, because Dreamworks were never at all at fault, the Voltron Shippers were so spiteful that they intimidated voice actors from showing up to cons. Its the fault of Entitled nerds whose head canons were invalidated so they decided to throw tantrums like children and target whoever they can find because they either forgot or never learned basic etiquette and common sense and thats on them if they want to be this way about a show thats intended for children which is Ironic. bitterness and toxicity comes with shippers, Bleach had a explosive issue with shippers for example. I'm not suprised when I get into a new fandom and when the shippers touch it, they either make the fandom toxic or fortunately become a side of a community no one cares about and everyone ignores or laugh at. Shippers are a joke.

The funny thing is about people blaming Dreamworks is that Dreamworks came out after the Adam controversy to state that they knew killing off Adam would be a bad look. They wanted Adam to stay and be a character but the writers said no.

It also got tiring seeing how many people, well I guess this might tie into the “telephone games”, would claim that so and so animator/producer/voice actor/etc outright states that xyz ship was originally going to be endgame, but the thing is, it literally seems like this was said about most ships in the fandom (ie klance, sheith, kallura, shallura, kacxa, allurance, lotura, etc) and I know the show was in production hell but c’mon. Leads me to think shippers just talk and say whatever to get likes and notes for attention, especially after the obnoxious entitled behaviors of one of these groups tainted the show and overall fandom experience, leaving others to resort to being just as petty back. At this point, the “what could have been” claims ultimately do not matter and don’t count, because a) some were not explicitly shown within the show itself and left to MULTIPLE interpretations and b) if more than one of these ships were considered at one point, and they share the same characters (ie klance/sheith vs kacxa/kallura sharing Keith, allurance vs kallura/shallura sharing allura, allurance vs plance/lotura sharing allura and lance, etc) then all that really “proves” is that the writers had many ideas on the table so it seems they gave little nuggets to everybody to interpret as they please and allurance got the big one because Lance already had an established crush on Allura, but I, like many also believe that it could have been handled much better and Allura should have lived. I was much too invested in the story and enjoying these characters to obsess over potential romance between them and watched from the sidelines as a multishipper for lack of a better word. Plus, many also seem to weaponize these “what ifs” only when it comes to ship wars rather than for actual plot points, like character deaths for instance. If you’re going to say a specific ship is “canon” just because the writers considered it at one point, then you also need to acknowledge that a character is technically dead “canonically” because the writers considered killing them off at one point but ultimately didn’t (and no I am not referring to Shiro bc he actually did come back, I am referring to other characters with supposedly rumored deaths for them being “originally” considered but not followed through). It’s all too ridiculous at this point; multiple realities exist in this show, so let your imagination thrive in your desired reality and mind your own damn business while others enjoy theirs.

It was The Big Fandom just as anti/proship started to become a thing, that's why Shiro's va was harassed for liking sheith. and also while there was def misinfo going around, netflix and crew did do some queer baiting marketing when it came to Shiro. A banner with his silhouette around a rainbow pops to mind ik there was more but its been years. As in, the episodes that have the rep better be at least be 75% through the animation portion of production before revealing that info. We all know executives are very flakey with different aspects of shows so promising something that you don’t know for certain can lead to an even greater falling (although i heard that dreamworks did say that they were ok with queer characters but i didnt fact check this so take this with a grain of salt)

Some character ships are cute. I won't deny. But people need to CHILL out when it comes to them being canon. Stuff doesnt need to always be canon.

I think the show was honestly really good but the religious shippers were the downfall of the fandom. I’ve heard death threats were sent to people and honestly I could see that being true.

Geez, honestly things don’t need ‘representation’ just let the writers make the material, Fans should act like audience in sports games, in the sidelines and not forcing themselves onto the field to hit a player

Wait they are toxic? I NEVER interacted with the fandom. Never have and likely never will mostly because Voltron is one of the few shows I love but have no inclination to talk about it that much.

Why the need to make it a big deal? Series and stories are either well done or poorly executed. No matter the characters gender identity or sexual preference. I mean, not like people were analyzing Inspector Gadget’s identity or preferences back in the 80’s.

The telephone happened with the plot too, there was a lot of factors tumblr was getting too comfortable being toxic with their anon messaging/ the advertisment, trailers and twitter of the Voltron crew said one thing butvwatching the season was disappointing. Fandom did magnify and wrote things better so seeing voltron after was meh.
But plot was also a telephone game, compared to pidge and how her story developed and then compared to the other characters? When jeremy said “Lance straight up dies.” We wern’t exlecting it to be so meh, the trailers said keith was going to be black paladin but watching the series? Keith was never with voltron season 4-7 and even 7/8 dont count as they got to earth and were focusing on defense than anything else but keith kinda floated around. They brought back zarkon but it wasn’t really noticable, we thought Lance would use his altean sword, shiro didnt get closure with keith killing sendek and not him, keith had his story just shown to him via a space comet where he and his mother shared memories and it also ‘conviently’ told him shiro was a clone. We wanted to see Lance realise that. Overall comparing pidge and how her development happened how she had more flashbacks/character development family stuff and a goal outside of voltron it felt like the rest were side characters to her show. I know people enjoy voltrin so I think maybe the adverts/ twitter posts probably create a different expectation esp since new fans say they dont see a problem with voltron, but personally I think after s1/2 the writing went downhill compared to them it had weight it mattered it came up and would be explained meanwhile the rest of the seasons it felt like things were just forgotten. Why did shiro have a flashback of a friend of the garrison only to go home and stare at the obituary name of adam sadly then forget about it after? Like what was the point of that? Without romance/lgbt like why introduce a character and kill him? Years later I’m still confused on what the story of voltron was so supposed to be?

agree, honestly, people should stop assuming there will always be a gay character or queer on everything
But yes, i think modern shows should not put any romantic scenes anymore since those seems controversial.

Look Voltron fandom was toxic before 95% of the people watching this video were even born honestly there was a huge split between Voltron Lion and Voltron car people I mean I was like 9 years old when Voltron was on TV and even at that young of age there were people that we shunned because they we're team car. And I'm 9. And they didn't talk to us either cuz we were team lying so any toxicity that shows up 20 25 years later 30 years later is not surprising in the least

If you need to feel represented in a piece of entertainment to enjoy it, only to be disappointed, it's not the entertainment that's at fault.

Watching SPoP and VLD was…something else. They quite literally shared so many of the exact same tropes, but in a “VLD copied SPoP’s homework and turned it in first.”
Guess which show ages better. Hint: not VLD.
(Also since both were under Dreamworks, and VLD’s EPs both despised Shiro for being a paragon character so wanted to kill him off and only half-heartedly brought in the clone arc (and clone murder to actually bring him back but “out of their way…”) while ALSO wanting to be patted on the back for making Shiro in canonical MLM relationships while ALSO ALSO ignoring Every Single Warning they were given about what they were doing would be a Bury Your Gays… yeahhhh… I wouldn’t be surprised if my Copied Homework crack theory IS actually legit…)

The reason we're toxic was because there was CLEAR chemistry and hints dropped for multiple ships...
And then season 8 rolls around and dreamworks screws it all up. It just flopped after season 3 and 4.

I rewatched it fairly recently and there _really_ weren't any "hints" for most of the ships, especially not in the first few seasons.
