  • The dreaded U-Turn! I think it's something every rider was nervous about while learning to ride. It's also one of the easiest maneuvers to get wrong. Turning a big heavy bike around in a small area can be nerve wracking. There's so many things you're trying to think about. When do I turn? Where do I look? What do I do with the bike? In this video I'm going to break down how I do a U-Turn on a motorcycle and also some practice tips to make it easier and with a little bit of practice you'll be able to do the U-Turn anywhere and with confidence.
    Hopefully everyone is enjoying short series, just a reminder the setup in these videos isn't to scale for the mod 1 test area. There is a link below should you want to practice this to scale in your own time

    I had my first day of my DAS yesterday and really struggled with U turns. Watching this video though, i see that they had me training in a much smaller space. The turn was much tighter and i was having to initiate the turn much quicker as well. I'll try out some of the tips from the video today and hopefully improve.

    Great video and I'm really shocked on the size of the area. I've been practicing on a side road which is the width of two parking spaces. Loving the channel and at the moment I'm practicing on my 125 and all your videos are really helping. Still working on my speed at the moment trying to get to 50mph. Thanks and I'm looking forward to emergency brake and avoidance video.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the width of the U-turn is definitely one of those things that plays on people's minds. Thinking it's quite tight when it's actually pretty wide. I wouldn't worry too much about speed on your 125. Some 125s you really have to push hard to get to the national speed limit. Anything over about 50-55 they scream their head off 😂. First time you're out on the road on a bigger bike you'll soon realise just how easy and quickly you'll get up to 50. 🤜🤛

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the U turn can be a tricky part of the test. Always remember to look where you want the bike to stop. It can take a few attempts, but stick with it. 🤜🤛

  • @_fleur
    @_fleur 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Maybe stupid question sorry, but for going slow/controlled in the U-turn, are you keeping the clutch at the "biting" point and pulling in on the clutch if you need to go a little slower (instead of fully letting clutch go), or breaking?
    Thanks for the great video!

  • @BillyHey72
    @BillyHey72 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    U turns were my nemesis for a long time before my Mod 1. Probably not helped by the fact on one of my first practices I dropped the bike and that was forever on my mind. In the end the best tip I got was get used to feeling your right elbow tucked into your side. Once I got that every one after that was a breeze.
    Still don't like doing them IRL though, unless it's a wide road. At least once the test is done you can dab a foot if necessary.

    The trick is to look at the end point . Last week when I practiced I was turning a bit too sharp. Any tips for a nice smooth turn ?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd start by practicing circles. Get used to keeping the bike smooth as you do it. Throttle and clutch control are key as well as using a small amount of back break if needed, this can help keep the bike stable. As for turning to sharp, create a reference point that you need to go around, this will prevent the sharp turning. After some practice it will become 2nd nature. 🤜🤛

    I'm in the middle of my lessons an got my mod 1 on Tuesday... my instructor has told me throughout the mod 1 slow control if my break light goes off at any time its a minor. So he wants a constant red light at the back. Breaks always on. Even when stopped transferring from back to front an vice versa? Have you heard of this before?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey, Jake. What part of the slow control? I'm assuming after the slalom and the figure 8? If it's the slow control in a straight line, feathering the back brake definitely helps, but I've never heard of getting a minor if the brake light goes off. Maybe that's new but it definitely wasn't part of the test when I sat my mod 1. 🤜🤛

  • @BaldemnicSW
    @BaldemnicSW ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you maintain this level of control on a twist and go? All of the fine manoeuvring seems to rest on clutch control.

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  ปีที่แล้ว

      You would treat it exactly the same as a manual bike. As long as you have the correct speed going into the U turn, using the throttle alone will be enough to manage the bike through the turn. 🤜🤛

  • @RF-jr1od
    @RF-jr1od 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What's easier MOD 1 or 2. I personally think MOD 2

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I thought mod 1 was the harder of the tests. It wasn't technically that difficult but it's so much easier to fail. Mod 2 isn't exactly straight forward either but as long as you treat it right, it's basically just riding around showing you can stay in control and ride safety. 🤜🤛
