Hi. I really like your videos. I bought an ODay 1985 in 2020, it’s my first boat. I’m a newbie but wanted to constructively comment on 2 items. My boat did not have covers for the battery boxes. The inspector suggested they be covered as a metallic object such as a tool could short the terminals and cause a fire. I added the covers with firm straps. The second comment is about reefing. I was told not to tie the reefing lines around the boom because if the reef fails the sail will be ripped. Also it was suggested to tie the reef point to the boom directly as the cam cleat on the reefing line is not reliable. I greatly appreciate your videos the immensely helpful and a bit scary you have pointed out so many things that can go wrong. Happy sailing! Malcolm
Great episode. One thing I would suggest for anyone is to add a battery monitor. With this inexpensive device you can have the confidence to use stuff like the autopilot and all the 12 volt stuff and still know you can start the engine at the end of the day (or night). Mine even showed me I could run the am/fm stereo, VHF and depth sounder with the 100W solar panel alone supplying the power. It also taught me that 1 incandescent bulb draws the same amount of current as 8 LED bulbs. Amazingly useful device.
Thanks, I've been looking at them for the house battery - also useful so you know hat solar might be needed to stay charged ... I just haven't picked on out yet!
@@AdventuresInParadise sure thing! Most if the negative reviews on it are bc people did not connect it correctly. You should have a ground from the battery connected to one side of the shunt then EVERYTHING ELSE connected on the other side of the shunt. What i did was i ran a short run from the battery ground to the shunt then from the shunt to my ground buses. Thats the only way you get real or correct readings from the monitor. I mean why install a battery monitor to monitor usage and charge if you dont run everything through the shunt. Its pretty simple.
Thanks! be on the lookout for a part 2 of how to make a sailboat that will be more extensive than he first one, using the experience and knowledge I've gained since then.
I sail a 1986 O'Day 28 on Lake Ontario out of Toronto. I've owned the boat for over 15 years and it's a great boat - looks good, roomy for it's size and it's so easy to sail. I've a few upgrades to make on my own boat and I appreciate you taking the time to video and share your projects. I enjoy the sailing episodes, too. Thanks!
"...just sit here and do nothing." This is exactly how I feel after doing anything on my boat. Everything you said is so true. Been following since the early Catalina 22 vids - that's what I have - but love your work and presentation with these. I hope to upgrade to something bigger in a few years, it's nice to know these videos will be relevant. Great job!
I just bought an 1986 28 O Day last week so I'm just getting to know the boat. I want to install air conditioning and wondering what unit is installed on your boat . I just love the way you present the project and show how installs often need a plan B

Just so u know u can cut a bigger hole saw over a smaller hole without the center hole. the way i do this require a scrape piece of play say 5 mm thick u then drill the larger hole in it for a 100 mm dia hole make a 120 square piece of ply cut the 100 mm hole on center of jig piece now u can use the jig to Aline and drill your new hole over the old one .Hope this helps.
Wow, that's great! You're not the first to tell me this and I can also think of the sailing channels we watched before taking the leap ourselves. Thanks for letting us know! Let me know how it goes.
How old r u? Im 38 and been thinking about buying a sailboat...like yalls videos bc seems more real than all those famous sailboat u tube stars with there 50ft cats or 45ft monoholes.

That was nice, thanks! We were laughing about how tired I looked at the end there... I was beat...
putting this same unit on my 28 this helps a lot.
Love this channel!
You guys are awesome !
You can put a block behind a hole saw. As long as the block is braced against the edges, it will work
good point
