  • A hungry bird is trying to catch a duckling, but it escapes before it can be caught. The crows and magpies are meat-eating predatory birds, and they, along with the gull and the heron, have been hunting and attacking and eating the ducklings on this duck pond from the start of the ducks' breeding season, and their attacks are very hard to stop because the ducks haven't got the necessary skills to adequately defend themselves and their ducklings. Ducks are aquatic waterbirds that live on freshwater and seawater; ducks don't have the predatory instinct to hunt, but they will eat small water and land animals, plants, and insects. A female duck is known as a pen, and a male duck is known as a drake; the duckling is a tiny baby duck with no avian flight feathers but fluffy plumage, and a young or adolescent duck is much more giant and more confident as a food forager with their avian flight feathers almost grown, and spending less time close to the mother duck. The magpie is a species of omnivorous bird from the Corvidae family of birds that includes ravens, rooks, nutcrackers, jays, and magpies that eat various animals and carrion for their meat-eating diets and a variety of seeds and grains, fruits and nuts, and almost anything they can find when they are foraging and feeding. Magpies have a predatorial instinct to attack, hunt, and eat other animals they can handle, such as rats, mice, and other small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The magpies will also eat other birds and their babies, especially during the avian breeding seasons, and this type of predator eats animal prey; feeding behavior has evolved over millions of years to enable them to have an extensive menu of wild protein-rich food. Food eaten without chewing is how magpies and all birds eat their food because they have no teeth for crushing, and dining on big or small portions by swallowing in gulps is how they feed. The magpies are avian animals that can be found living and breeding in many habitats throughout the world.

Crows (Corvidae) are not predators per se but rather opportunistic omnivores which are able to take advantage of a wide variety of prey and non-prey items. If they were predators they would enjoy more efficient attack strategies so as to avoid inefficient energy loss. This Magpie was taking advantage of a possible prey item struggling in front of it but it wasn't prepared at all to persue it. Additionally, the Mallard chick was in an inappropriate habitat (on land) and so much more vulnerable. Herons and gulls are more efficient and wily predators of ducks and there is a habitat overlapp.
