nice however there isn't anywhere close to me to run back and forth to to scale to be able to figure that out. Nice vid and thnx for the info appreciate it
What's really sad is the F-150 in the video only has 200 lbs less cargo capacity than my F-250, because of the way Ford fictitiously limits F-250s to 10,000 lbs GVWR to save on insurance and registration.
@@velikijoxotnikno he’s right have you tried googling the phrase “gcwr ratings brands” or “gcwr ratings manufacturer”? They intentionally keep it hush in order to sell more half-tons
I have 2012 Chevy 1/2-ton 2wd crew cab with 5.3L V8 weights 5100lbs. The owner's manual list my max trailer weight at 6200lbs. The hitch max trailer weight is 5000lbs, distributing weight is 10,500lbs, & tongue weight is 600lbs. If my truck weights 5100lbs, four adults 750lbs, full tank of fuel 160lbs, misc. cooking utensils, small generator, clothing 400 to 500lbs. I'm over my GCWR, is that correct? And this is with an empty water tank.
Most setups max on payload before going over combined. You can find your payload capacity on the tire loading sticker. With all the cargo, and tongue weight, you may be getting close to payload limit.
Sorry, not trying to sound stupid, but when you way you are measuring the "weight" of the vehicle and the tongue weight and the combined weight of the vehicle and trailer, how are you doing that? Where do you go to do that or how are you measuring those?
I used BetterWeigh, an onboard scale device. I first weighed the vehicle alone, and then with the trailer (combination). You can also use a scale at a landfill, or sole truck stops have a CAT scale for weighing.
So I installed the app and added all the values based on my setup: 2019 Tundra : 7200 GVWR with max cargo at 1265 and 15540 GCWR (per the user manual). The trailer Rockwood 2516s: 7772 GVWR with 1568 max cargo. All said and done the app now reads GVW 6829 for the Tundra (yellow warning) with a total GCW of 12289. That's with ZERO cargo added to either the truck or trailer. If I move the GCW slider to the max (still yellow) to 7195 that puts the GCW now at 13139 and only allows me 300lbs cargo in the truck (not even covering my wife and I) and 550 lbs cargo allowed in the trailer. And the optimum tongue weight at 816. Anything above that everything turns red. Is that accurate? Did I get too much trailer for the Tundra. Please advise!
You have it right. Most setups these days max out on payload before reaching a combined limit. As pickups add larger cabs and luxury items, the payload left over has gone down. Some loaded F150’s have less than 1000 lb payload capacity. This payload has to cover tongue weight as well as cargo.
Quick follow up on this. I used a tongue weight scale yesterday and the trailer came in at just under 800. Might as well call it 800 lbs. weighed my truck at the local Catscales and with a full tank of gas, just me and no cargo it weighed 6520. We took the trailer out yesterday loading up just some essentials for a long weekend. Not much stuff (not even any firewood). Nothing in the trailer other than our typical cooking utensils and some beverages for just the two of us. Reweighed the truck and trailer at the scales and the drive axle came in at 7820lbs, the trailer axle at 5980lbs and a gross of 13800lbs. So I’m over on my GVWR by 620lbs?
I dont think these weights are explained the way AI answered my towing capacity formula. My towing capacity is 6000# My truck weighs empty 3000#. If you subtract these two it gives you the weight allowed to tow. Only 3000#. Not 6000#. I guess Towing Capacity on sticker is a reference point or formula to start weight tow ability fast and easy These weights are not using the trailer weight in any formula. But now I know how heavy a trailer I can tow. Now this weight is towing weight and not payload weight I can put in truck. From my understanding you can still fill up your payload to GVWR. But your payload with trailer tongue attached is going subtract some payload in truck than without trailer attached. The tongue weight adds weight to truck (GVWR) so its a reduction in truck payload I read to get tongue weight you measure the trailer on a scale with just axles on scales. This puts tongue off scales. Then move trailer back on scale and get weight resting on tongue. Difference is Tongue Weight An easier way is to weigh just truck, then truck and trailer, then only trailer over axles and tongue off scales. The combined weights of truck and trailer on scale should be subtracted from just axle weights of trailer on scale. The difference will be tongue weight. Now you can continue to max GVWR of truck for trip. Im just looking to buy a 3000# pound trailer loaded with water propane to tow behind my 1995 3.0 Ranger. 2wd auto
Just starting out and looking to pull a trailer but I was wondering if RV dealers have weight scales available for finding the actual weights of truck and/or trailers ?
Unfortunately, no, RV dealers do not have scales. Landfills and major truck stops are your best bet for floor scales. BetterWeigh is an onboard scale you can use anywhere. www.curtmfg.com/betterweigh
@@michaelhall3485 Thanks for the info. I am used to doing annual weight checks on big wide body aircraft . Most truck stops have CAT Scales to weigh semi-trucks on 3 axles simultaneously: steering, tractor drives, & trailer. If u place your pickup correctly, you can get this same split on the scale ticket. Runs ~$14.
Been using the app 6 months & very helpful in selecting a recent SuperDuty purchase & seeking next RV. 1. Do manufacturer’s GVWR sticker include fuel weight, if not does the application factor fuel wt.? 2. Does the app calc/include a buffer/safety factor before reaching yellow caution range? Love the app because it’s easy to use & stores the ratings on multiple (pulling) vehicles. Suggest a link or page included detailing it’s parameters. Thanks
im just now learning about GVWR and i was wondering if you know how to change the GVWR from a 33,000 rating down to a 26,000 rating so i can avoid getting a cdl
If your taking about a vehicle and not a trailer, I don't beleive you can. At least not as a pratical matter. It would have to be re-engineered by someone who is authorized. De rating a trailer is much easier and much more common. I beleive its done via the trailers manufacturer. I believe the path of least resistance may be to get a non commercial DL if your state offers one. Non Commercial Class B to drive it, Non Commercial Class A to tow with it, unless the GVWR of the trailer you want to tow is less than 10,001 pounds GVWR. Then you can do that with only a Class B CDL. But I have never been able to determine conclusively if non commercial CDLs apply to anything other than RVs./motor homes. But all the requirements are based on the state you are licensed in and not based on the state you are driving in. No state allows someone with a Class C DL to operate a vehicle with a GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs. without some sort of commercial or non commercial DL because that limit is Federal and no state is allowed be less restrictive than Federal requirements. If a non CDL isn't an option, I would likely just sell the truck and buy one with a GVWR less than 26,,001 lbs. to avoid all the hassle. But that's just me.

Jesus Christ why do we need a freaking college degree to know how much my FREAKING TRUCK CAN TOW
Your question is a bit narrow-minded. There is more to [legally and safely] towing a trailer than simply knowing how much weight a truck can pull.

Go to a site that can take your VIN and it will gig you the specs. Or go to a Ford dealer.
Where in the manual can you find the gcwr? I can’t find it anywhere online, in the car or in the manual.
How is the pin weight determined after your fifth wheel is loaded
I understand all the other weight limits.
Thanks in advance!
How do you weigh this stuff. My scale isn’t big enough to put a car or a trailer on

does gross tow weight include tongue weight
