There were parts of this album that were a challenge. I think there are a few times when I mention that I have to actively shut off the part of my mind that follows lyrics and just listen to everything as sound. It's very different from what I'm accustomed to, but I do enjoy what's going on. There are a lot of interesting layers, and I can see why people can throw this on repeat for several listens in a row. I'm going to chew on this album over the next few days and do a follow up video on it.

    1. An opp is short for opposition

now that concerts are slowly coming back, and covid 19 is becoming less of an issue, people are starting to understand what cartis vision was when he created whole lotta red and it is aging pretty well. its clear to see this album has inspired a lot of hip hop music coming out right now too.

The metamorphosis is carti's maturity and his tendency to completely change his music sonically. He would never have done this kind of album 4 years ago if he hadn't gone through this metamorphosis and straying off finding new sounds. He foreshadowed all of this slowly in his album Die Lit with Flatbed Freestyle and R.I.P, but went full throttle in this album. Personally I would have recommended listening to his discography chronologically as it would have highlighted the "metamorphosis" strongly

30:05 the “metamorphosis” carti is talking about is the style of music he is making now opposed to just a couple years ago. his last project “Die Lit” has a completely different sound to it, more of a mesmerizing melodic sound. with wlr, it’s more dependent on hard-hitting drums, loud and raspy vocals, almost a blend of punk and rap. also, his clothing style has changed drastically from just a couple years ago, as in he used to dress more basic in aesthetics and would wear streetwear like supreme, off white and jordan’s. now he dresses as some have dubbed like “a bisexual vampire”, focused more on high fashion designer, mainly black clothing.

Something I never realized about Carti’s music until watching this reaction is how vital pop culture context is to hip hop. I mean, I knew it was important of course when discussing songs that are about social issues, but there are actually so many little cultural artifacts in this album that you (by not fault of your own) couldn’t have picked up on without being invested in Carti’s music for years. Your association with “Vamp” as Red for Bloods the gang is very cool, but I’m not even sure carti meant anything that deep. He literally has been dressing like a vampire for two years and posting on Instagram strange photos of himself that were a total departure from his earlier image (hence DJ Akademics reference to these posts on the intro of ‘Control’: many hip hop fans thought these photos were “gay”). Beyond that: in metamorphosis, Carti sings about using “hieroglyphics” because people can’t understand him, which is a meta and tongue-in-cheek reference to the whole industry telling him his lyrics were garbage. Whole Lotta Red is Carti being the best at being the worst. Embracing punk rock aesthetics to say the least in the coolest way possible and get out before the track gets boring. It is honestly an incredible artistic statement and (unfortunately for your rap discovery journey) is actually kind of an end marker for the “trap” genre, the final stage before a, well, Metamorphosis. I could go on about other little moments: Vamp anthem sampling a classic Vampire movie theme while Carti calls his legion of “vamps” fans to ride with him and the rest of the industry to “get ready” (imagine this track at a concert) or the usually not-concerned-with-subject-matter Carti screaming his heart out over his love for his dead brother (Die4Guy) its and explosive, emotional and exhilarating album that deserves to be heard as loud as possible with as many people as possible. To me, it’s a masterpiece that can only truly be appreciated with enough cultural context. The thing is though, you HAD to hear this record at some point, And I’m really impressed you gave it this much careful consideration and thought. You’re a gem on this platform, man - enjoy the ride!

I can’t imagine how jarring it might be for someone going from the funk/soul inspired old school hip hop into the electronic inspired Southern style of trap. Jumping from something like College Dropout into this would make you wonder where exactly the appeal is coming from.

There are so many times when I'm trying to digest something in a song and I know I have a massive knowledge gap regarding the immediate topic. It makes it very tough, so I'm glad you picked up on this. It's also why I try to focus on my own interpretation and hear what the song is telling me rather than trying to read all the side notes on Genius.com. Those notes can help me understand more, but I like letting the art speak to me however it can, even if it means I'm wildly incorrect haha
But I think that makes it fun for you guys, too. A different perspective. Different mindset. Thanks for commenting on this specifically. Lack of context/knowledge has made song albums a real challenge.

To understand the “metamorphosis” and understand the grand context of that word relating to the album, you would have to listen to Carti’s earlier work. This album WLR was the most different, experimental piece of work he’s ever done. Before WLR, you can see on his previous album Die Lit how the transition started with flirtations of rock and different beats. Before DIE lit his notable work was Self-Titled Playboi Carti, which is and sounds completely different from WLR but it sounds similar to Die Lit. From the start of his career and up to WLR he’s evolving, and I believe after watching your video that he still is evolving.

Around the 30:00 minute mark on the song M3tamorphosis, i think the evolution he's talking about, is his own artistic evolution. Cartis initial entrance on to the rap scene, was as a fairly average uninspiring artist (in my opinion of course), but now that he has spent time working on 3 albums (that have all become more and more experimental), he is morphing into someone i regard as one of the most forward thinking, new and experimental rappers out there. I get his lyrics are far from deep or layered, but as most people have pointed out, thats not the reason we are listening, i suspect most of us are listening because he's a one of a kind artist in the landscape today.

On Punk Monks, at least how i interpreted it, was that he wasn’t specifically saying he dislikes people who are friendly, more that he dislikes people who are fake. Or people who are just using him to advance themselves. This ties back into the verse where he’s talking about all these rappers he was close with before they were popular, wanting to sign them and help them grow, and basically getting screwed over or they turned his back on him. And no because of this he’s basically just cynical and wants nothing to do with anybody. Exemplified with the ‘don’t talk to me’ line.
