  • Today, we'll take a look a knife that's very good, except for the fact that they're slacking in the blade steel department, the CRKT and Ken Onion Slacker.

      Seriously. This design is friggin awesome. Them I sae the steel..
      Civivi and other budget brands upped their game up in quality and materials and still at a lower price point/quality. They need to cut their manufacturer and move to another factory. This is getting out of hand. 😒

    • @SlavicCelery
      @SlavicCelery 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      People are paying for the R&D costs for the takedown system. Same thing is going on with the deadbolt locking system. They're going to get cheaper and better quality the more the economics of scale kick in.
      All of that said, D2 for me is a damned good balance point between use and cost. I will say, 8cr13mov is an excellent steel to learn sharpening on. But pick up a Ganzo/Harnds/Various decently made chinese blades. Not because they're the best choice for use. Mainly just for getting better at sharpening skills.

    1.4116 can be a pretty decent stainless, but like most kitchen cutlery companies, CRKT has chosen to run it soft. For toughness, or some other bullhockey reason. They should have chosen 14C28N or 154CM and run it at 60 #rockwizzlefoshizzle . They could very easily do it at the current price.

    Living here in the Portland area, CRKT just seems like the special-needs child in the classroom, everything from the crappy steel regularly chosen to the fact that they're the ONLY local knife company that lacks a local warranty office. I'd LOVE to own some of their designs, but the steel makes them toys. I also get that I'm not their target market...they're looking to the person who just got out of the gas station knife world. They work with designers to make beautiful butter knives.

    I really I think you need to check out the CRKT HVAS. It has the same problematic steel, but has been designed for a much lower price point and may be the epitome of what a field strip knife wants to be. Also has an aggressive hollow grind to help cutting performance.

    Love the video, but I have to disagree with your assessment of it not being “righty tighty”. In reality, it is righty tighty...you are just on the wrong side of the bolt head. If you place the knife front side down, you will have oriented your body correctly to the head side of the bolt instead of the thread side. Since your body is now oriented to the bolt as normal, it will now be a normal righty tighty. Sorry for the nit pick.

    I really like the blade and handle shape. Its showing on amazon for $65 so the price point is not too bad. With that said with the steel issues and teflon washers it should be in the $45 range not 65. If they bumped it up to the Aus 8 range with a good hardness and put in phosphor bronze washers. $65 to $75 all day long and I would definitely buy one. As always thank you for the great review and your honest thoughts and opinions on the knife. seems like they "slacked" on this knife.... sorry I couldn't resist.

  • @knifeinfluenza

    1.4116 is a common steel here in Europe for kitchen and hunting knifes. It's a good steel choice when you need a very high corrosion resistance + easy to be sharpened. 1.4116 is dishwasher proof and resists the "liquids" that sees the world when hunting. It has a tendency to roll the edge instead of chipping, which is good for food prep. e.g. when a bone is touched hardly with the edge. It is then very easy to re-sharpen or to be kept sharp by stropping. It's used for user-knifes from low to mid price ranges. Of course it might be the wrong steel choice for the average online buyer to cut down piles of cardboard each week.
    Knife makers in Europe have a lot of experience with this steel and the heat treat. I wouldn't skip a knife just because of this steel.

    I don't come across many CRKT folders that really catch my eye. I love the way the Homefront looks, and I really like this design as well. I would own them both if not for the blade steel. Im not a steel snob whatsoever, but I have experience with these Krupp steels, and they really are lacking when compared to any other steel being offered on budget knives these days. If this was in 8cr, or better yet AUS8, I would buy it in a heartbeat. This is an ongoing issue across the CRKT line, and I am really sick of seeing these beautiful designs go to waste, because they are being outfitted with inferior steels, and cheap synthetic pivots. I dont get it. Wouldnt it be cheaper to use a chinese steel instead of a german one? Give us a break CRKT

    If it was aluminum with a 14c28n blade I would definitely pay 80 for it

    Seems like a great blade to throw the steel away for and make a utility blade or scalpel blade holder for.

    If crkt would get a better basic steel i would consider them an actual knife company. As is its just 70% off at cabela's discount crap that you feel ripped off even at 70%.

    CRKT managed to find a way to sell a thickly-ground Victorinox blade for $80.
    A human being signed off on that idea.
    This is why democracy is a mistake.

    My experience with CRKT is that, when they (or actually, their contract makers...because CRKT actually does not make anything) try for a harder steel...they end up botching the heat treat. I've had several such issues - the edges are too brittle and develop microchips very easily. This has soured me on the brand. Message to CRKT : STOP cutting corners....and watch the QC of your contract makers more closely. Otherwise (and until I see that happen)... the answer is... NOPE.

      Who makes their knives, if they don’t? I’ve got a few CRKT knives and I’d be curious to know who made them.

    • @NotYou9311
      @NotYou9311 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SamPeabody No idea. Various Chinese contract manufacturers, as I understand it. I don't think they publish that info, though. For me, that doesn't matter. All that matters is that the products (knives) are properly made and perform well. I really have no major complaints about how they make them...just the performance.

    I'm surprised the pivot thing just works sans any adjustment. Seems like it would be easy for them to get that not quite right on any given unit and then the owner would have no way to tweak in the way we always do to fine tune the action.

    CRKT has some great designs etc but really what they sell is an outsourced product that was made as cheaply as possible. I made the mistake of buying one. Won't be buying another.

    Funny part is, I like that steel for its budget rust resistance factor, like a budget h1 or lc200n, but Not for 80 bucks. Keep the steel, fix the price! Or damn it yes do a second run with better steel at this high price and drop the price on the 4116 model... I love my Hvas, and can wave it, so I don't Need the slacker, especially at that price. Too bad though, I kinda dig it!

    Imagine 3rd party blade for this platform with great steel and super thin slicy edge for another 30-40 $... and it comes with bronze washers....

    I totally agree. I wanted this knife (and many other CRKT designs that are great), but they are too expensive for the shit steels they use.
    I would really get at least 5 CRKT knives if they were more balanced (steel / price).

    1.4116 is used for most German kitchen knives. It's OK for savages who put their knives in the dishwasher, but overall it's a very outdated stainless steel. I have an 8€ Cold steel eland in this steel, but I definitely would not buy a 80$ CRKT in 1.4116.

    • @BManningtree

      @Skamperlin Yes, but the folding knife market seems far more competetive in that regard.

      @Skamperlin It's weird kitchen knives don't use the good steel usu. used in pocket knives. Took me a while to find an S35VN santoku knife (North Arm!).

  • @ZakWilson

    4116 isn't tough either. There's essentially nothing to like about it.
