Transmog, perhaps one of the most beloved features in wow, is a product of the ethereals introduced in MoP. If the void and ethereals turned on azeroth and attacked, the most crushing blow they could deal is to take away the ability to transmog, and the only to get it back was killing the end raid boss of the void expansion. no way all ethereals would turn. they are a race of many factions. I could see them becoming playable (it would literally be fan service and probably the most requested race since they were introduced) and some becoming the main enemies. Kinda like how we got death knights in wrath and demon hunters in legion. Now we got dragons and we're fighting bad dragons.
I've been playing WoW for 15+ years now so I feel like I have a decent understanding of the lore, but whenever I watch one of your videos I still am amazed at how much you teach me about the game. You are unbelievably knowledgeable in the lore and you break it down in such easily digestible ways, it's very easy/fun to listen to. It’s interesting that after years of horrifically bad story telling, I’m finally optimistic that the current team might be able to pull off a void story line worth diving into. Crazy what a decent expansion can do in a positive way haha
I think a large part of it is not being treated like idiots "My machinations lay undetected for years!", like at least say the dreadlord betrayal of Sylvanas in Wrath's invasion of undercity made sense from his background. Now everything is either insinuating we missed some crucial clue that never existed, or its on such a cosmic scale that we could never have imagined it because there's little to nothing on it. Plus plot twists are neat but It's starting to look like a braid of licorice with the amount of 'twists' back and forth going on in the last two expansions.
I have been BEGGING for the Ethereal to become a playable race. From their pose to their voice to their running animation; there is so much I love about them. I need to play as one!
That wouldn't make sense at all! We have seen Ethereal Mages Priests Rogues Warriors Warlocks Hunters and I believe Shamans They would clearly get Monks as well and eventually DKs. Paladin wouldn’t surprise me as one of their starting classes either
I'm gonna be honest, I think the 'Master' might be our old Dagger Waifu herself, Xal'atath. My reasoning? The fact that one of the last things we hear her say is that she wants to 'find her own fate'. Plus, considering everything we've gone through with her, she seems like the type to keep tabs on us, and using proxies has always been the 'Old God'/Void Entity way.
People are quick to want the grounded, mundane, classic fantasy - but the reality of the matter is that the core fantasy of the game is absolutely SOAKED in tabletop fantasies; and even there, no matter how much you want to just kill wolves and hunt dragons in their lairs, there are and always will be stories that matter on a cosmic level. We cannot ignore it, so let's make it the BEST it can be.
shadowlands had *so much* potential to be this* intro to a new dimension to the lore; a capsule around our universe, a core understanding about the cosmic fundamentals but instead the writers hyped everything up so much and then couldn't even find the ball to drop. galactic-level threats and and the stories that come from them are interesting, they just need to be written by people who have a clear sense of the why as well as the what and how.
I always found it interesting how Shadowlands had no Ethereals, but came up with another race that's basically the same exact concept without the backstory. It's almost like they were trying very hard to point out that Ethereals cannot breach that barrier, that is the one place they cannot get to.
Void is like quantum mechanics. All information but indistinguishable. Fate seems to be that elusive determinant, that one remaining variable to understanding everything in all time.
There is some Void- stuff in 10.1, but I believe they're saving the Ethereal plot for a Void- themed expansion. Maybe K'aresh (or what's left of it) will be the Outland of that expansion.
Honestly yeah, I think an Outland 2.0 would be good to explore a new world similar to outland. We know there are so many worlds in the canon mythos that it'd make sense we'd venture to one. Especially with the implications on void's influence on our world. Beyond that, it would be a good way to return and see the world changed again as we've seen lots of evidence for an old world revamp.
13:57 "The Void is a truly chaotic force" Yes, unlike say, the literal cosmic force of Chaos/Disorder which was until recently united under a Titan's rule. I find it very strange that the Void seems more and more associated with "endless possibilities", whereas Chaos/Disorder just wanted to destroy everything until there is nothing left. It's a cool idea though, so I think maybe Bliz just wrote themselves into a corner with the established lore and are doing their best. EDIT: Ooh, just had a thought! Since the Chronicle is now questionably canon thanks to Neltharion's annotations, what if the whole concept of the Six Forces is simply a lie (or more generously, a simplistic interpretation) by the Titans to portray the world as being more fundamentally ordered than it really is? What if the underlying structure of the cosmos is more haphazard than a Titan would admit or even understand, and the distinctions between Void and Chaos is less meaningful than we realise. It could even explain why Fel Warlocks are able to summon Voidwalkers and Observers. As much as I do actually like the Six Forces cosmology, it doesn't actually have much support and it often seems like the Devs regret its inclusion, so maybe this could be a way out? Just a thought.
It would be so cool if Ethereals became a new race or allied race. Possibly even a new race class combo for both factions to build the neutral race foundation a bit.
I also remind you of Murmur... that thing is eldritch horror as it gets, and we only beat a fragment of it in BC... the ethereals have their hands in all sorts of pies, like the Jailer, but way better
I kept thinking about Murur throughout this video. Are they void? Something akin to this "7th cosmic force" we're supposed to fear from Shadowlands? The discription in the Codex of Blood is in itself haunting "Existing only for chaos, its slightest whisper meant the destruction of whole worlds!"
I swear I remember hearing that Void Lords do not survive all that well in our realm/reality. Could that be why they die so easily when we encounter them?
i think the reason dimensius died so easily is becasue staying in reality for too long caused him to weaken. it just doesnt make sense that this rando miniboss was the one to obliterate a species known for its incrdibly advanced magic-tech

my biggest wonder is how they would even do character creation on a race thats just bandages. give us special ethereals with like magically arcane humanlike faces with some choices to just cover your face with bandages? a choice of bandage shapes and color? maybe arcane sigils all over the body and face? They gotta do something or everyone will look the same.

i feel like in later expansions or maybe this one, blizz will have players choose between the light and the void. Horde and alliance is kinda dying out now and factions play a HUGE part in the game so i would not be shocked if the remaining old gods/azshara become the main villains and we choose to side between the light and the void who hate each other
Ethereal race has always been the most interesting race to me, since I played with the love of my life in the original BFA. Most of my many alts level through bfa Nagrand to relive them. Really hope they do them right
Ya know, as much as I actually like old god stuff, and then Etherials are kind of cool, I'm a bit wary of a lot of this stuff. I don't want this expansion to veer left from the more personal Dragon Isles story into bringing back a bunch of old established characters just so people can go "oh dang it's X again!!". Like I'd love it if it's done right, I think they've done an amazing job with the various Aspects, Kalec with the Tuskarr was quite touching, I LOVED the time travel chase with Chromie (more Chromie in general please), but I've also enjoyed not seeing like... Thrall and Jaina and Anduin and Sylvanas etc etc. I didn't like the green dragon quest with Ysera, Tyrande and Malfurion at all, and I still haven't taken the time to do the Baine quests because I just... don't care about Baine. I'm wary of them going back into something like the Old Gods and, say, bringing back Azshara. And don't get me wrong, I think Azshara is a great character, but I worry about bringing her back, bringing old god stuff back, and then not having it feel DIRECTLY tied to the dragon isles. If the void stuff comes back up again I really hope it's directly tied to the dragon isles, have the void lords have something to do with the Infinite Dragonflight and give Chromie some real meaty stuff, I don't know. Have Azshara make a pact with the Djarden or the Primals or something idk. I'm staying cautiously optimistic because I think so far Dragonflight has done a very good job story wise, but I'm still gonna be a little wary after the last two expansions.
A modern interpretation of the Dimensius we fought in TBC is that if Void Lords are the equivalent of a Void pantheon like titans, then we just fought an avatar, like the one Sargeras used before Aegwynn destroyed it.
I honestly don't remember ANYTHING about coins in the journal, and I was there throughout pre-patch and until now. It didn't appear for my main or any of my alts, and I've done all the quests and side quests already.
Kaja'mite. Mimiron's experimentation on Pigmies. Azerite is Azeroth's Blood, Saronite is Yogg'Saron's Blood. Surrender or Else!, quest in the Lost Isles. Goblins helping Neltharion and Azshara (And building their new settlement in Azshara). And they really, really like coins... We don't know if Pigmies are Titan failures like Troggs and Drogbars but visually, it fits. And Kaja'mite... Giving you IDEAS!. Goblins are children of Chaos and Order. Of Void and Titan. Sure, Humans, Dwarves and Gnomes too. But Humans turned to Order and Light via Tyr's legacy. Dwarves are pure order, following Khaz'goroth for a while and turning to Norgannon for Knowledge. It will not surprise you, but Gnomes and Goblins have a lot in common. But Gnomes were Mechagnomes, used and loved by Mimiron. While Goblins, well... They were experiments, left to themselves when the fun passed just like Troggs and Drogbars. Gnomes were inclined to follow order, but Goblins, no. Goblins had to prove themselves. No Uldaman for them. So they reproduced. A lot. And became Azeroth's most influential trade markets. But why? And how?... Well... If mom's all over my other siblings, I guess I'll turn to dad, right?
I get a very “NeverEnding Story” vibe from this like one day they’re going to address us directly as players instead of our characters. Ultimately though, the whole idea of us being unbound by fate means we have plot armor and will never lose.
This is what Thal'kiel aka Skull of the Man'ari has to say about Elisande and her scrying. "Her attempts to control times flow are futile. Subtle forces work against her. Ones far more powerful than she could ever imagine." So with this it sounds like somebody was manipulating what she could see. I do agree that for the most part the players do achieve what was thought to be impossible, just the Elisande reference is kind of hard to say because of what Thal'kiel says
To be honest, I see the Void Elf's starter zone and I love it. But I can't imagine a full expansion like that. Imagine every zone, always dark and void... Full of void related creatures. I mean, I love it. But they need to really expand the field. Xal'atath (weird you didn't mention her I think) is like an upper society void member? They need to give us lore, how (and who from) the void "nourished" Azeroth, how much we don't know about it... If we go to a void expansion place, I hope they have great ideas and big imagination so it does not feel repetitive. I trust them.
I don't speak for all WoW players but I've been wanting to have the etherals as a race/class since legion so I'm ready for them. I would suspect though since we just got a healer/dps in Dracs and tank/dps prior then just straight up dps would be next. I'm down for that! Maybe one spec is ranged, one melee and third one a combo of the two. Wishful thinking I'm sure but who knows, it can happen.
One of the ethereal state that they summoned the void and let it consume their world to transform their bodies and acquire immortality. The brokers are also a divergent of them.
This whole thing brings a question to mind. How did the Outland black dragons get back to the dragon isles? And were they the only ones that took that path?
@@OrbObserver true, portals being maintained by mages. Be it Alliance, Horde, Dalaran, ect. People would have tabs on who comes and goes. SI:7…the horde equivalent, the uncrowned, ect. And it’s evident that Wraithion would have his finger on that pulse. So either he is out of touch, playing dumb, or the Outland black dragons came through a different portal. …this could all mean nothing…or other factions are involved
As a sidenote: when I returned to Wow in the beginning of shadowlands, I thought the SL cartel npc's were the same guys as burning crusade ethereals. Same vibe and all.
In a perfect world we’d get both brokers and ethereals as playable races, idec about transmog restrictions they’d bring, become so desensitized to it because of mechagnomes and dracthyr, I want me a playable energy being who glows and has an exotic culture and voice who’s low key as greedy as a goblin and as knowledge obsessed as any mage
What if the old god corruption isn't actually void but free will. What if the supposed most powerful titan yet to come didn't have the strict order mind set of the titans but free will to see the big picture
I've always wanted the Ethereals to be a playable race since TBC. Imagine playing an Ethereal paladin who's always looking for the best deal and manipulating lesser species for god knows what. Would be great for roleplay and just cool in general. Much like the pandas, they'd have to be a neutral race since playing both sides of the fence is more....profitable

The "Curse" of Flesh is not a curse and comes from exposure to Azeroth's spirit. The Titans call it a curse and blame the Old Gods because they just want us to antagonize them. (???)
maybe the heroes of Azeroth are Paracausal, they sit outside of the hand of fate, making their own fate, it's an idea that's used within the Destiny franchise for the Guardians, it very much sees fitting
Ehtereals are near to beings of pure energy, which would seems to give them an innate susceptibility to cosmic energy forces. The brokers are just death-aspected ethereals, and have likely been so long enough to develop their own unique culture but are still driven by their mercantile nature. I doubt they have any grand plans outside the Shadowlands, content to continue in their way as eternal beings of acquisition.
Evil's downfall is always its infighting, they're selfishness turns against each other. Good unites the harder things get, even the Horde and Alliance banding together.
i think the next expac will have us venture to another continent, alliance and horde together, unable to return to the azeroth we know for the duration of the next expac. while we are away, these guys take over, and the team have remodelled all the old areas, and void stuff thank you for coming to my ted talk
Well, since every cosmic force has a goal it inexorably strives towards, due to it's very nature (much like the Chaos Gods of Warhammer/40k), it would make sense that they are limited in what ways they can affect the material plane. Whenever one tries to get control, it gets beaten back by Mortals influenced by Azeroth. Why Azeroth? Well, we know most of the races sprang forth from either elements, including Spirit, Order, or the manipulation of these two by Void. So, as living things come into contact with Azerothian influence, thier ability to manipulate balance past what any of the primal forces can naturally forsee, stems from being an amalgam of all of these different forces' influence. We can choose, conciously or not, to draw strength from one source or another to shift the balance, breaking through nexial points of "fate" to dismantle those knots and the paths unwinding now builds new ones in the eternal struggle of the primal forces. We're the scaletippers. It seems the Void has figured out that "hmm, maybe we should stop messing with these creatures and just observe them, see if we can glean more info in what possibilities seem more likely than if we, by our own nature, drive full steam ahead over and over". So instead, they're letting themselves fade into the background more than usuall and just... Watch. With many eyes. Trying to predict the way we choose on a whim to cook the spaghetti of fate this time, compared to other times.
I'm confused...i thought the fel was chaos, which is why the titans of order were weak to it. Now the void is chaos? did i miss some realignments at some point? after looking at the cosmology chart, im even more confused because shadow is right next to order and light is right next to chaos, so doesn't that mean that light is more chaotic than shadow? does that mean the old gods are of light or death and enslaved by shadow?
I have always loved lore theory crafting and such. You do a great job with these but I don't have any faith left in Blizzard as a company. I'm sure they have some great people still there but I have to accept this isn't the same company I grew up with. I decided never to return to "retail" WoW ever again after BFA but I can still enjoy the "story" from the sidelines.
I believe the planet Azeroth has a unique quality in the cosmos which puts it outside of the normal universe's space and time. It's an anomaly, maybe the planet was never meant to be and it formed anyways. That could be the reason so many entities want to possess it. None of the old gods sent into the cosmos encountered a planet like Azeroth. Thus, maybe the old gods sent to Azeroth were changed by the planet giving them a sense of free will and purpose outside of their mission and what the Void Lords wanted. That could be the cause or source of the rift between the old gods and the Void Lords. Azeroth being a unique anomaly in the Cosmos can also be the reason our fate is so hard to see. The Nightborn are an evolution of the Trolls, which are a native species to the planet, Humans are not. Humans evolved from a creation of the Titans (Order) and the Old Gods (Chaos). This is why humans have no "Fate". They are writing their own history in real time, no matter what forces are acting against them.

i feel like in later expansions or maybe this one, blizz will have players choose between the light and the void. Horde and alliance is kinda dying out now and factions play a HUGE part in the game so i would not be shocked if the remaining old gods/azshara become the main villains and we choose to side between the light and the void who hate each other

Ethereal race has always been the most interesting race to me, since I played with the love of my life in the original BFA. Most of my many alts level through bfa Nagrand to relive them. Really hope they do them right

Ya know, as much as I actually like old god stuff, and then Etherials are kind of cool, I'm a bit wary of a lot of this stuff. I don't want this expansion to veer left from the more personal Dragon Isles story into bringing back a bunch of old established characters just so people can go "oh dang it's X again!!". Like I'd love it if it's done right, I think they've done an amazing job with the various Aspects, Kalec with the Tuskarr was quite touching, I LOVED the time travel chase with Chromie (more Chromie in general please), but I've also enjoyed not seeing like... Thrall and Jaina and Anduin and Sylvanas etc etc. I didn't like the green dragon quest with Ysera, Tyrande and Malfurion at all, and I still haven't taken the time to do the Baine quests because I just... don't care about Baine. I'm wary of them going back into something like the Old Gods and, say, bringing back Azshara. And don't get me wrong, I think Azshara is a great character, but I worry about bringing her back, bringing old god stuff back, and then not having it feel DIRECTLY tied to the dragon isles. If the void stuff comes back up again I really hope it's directly tied to the dragon isles, have the void lords have something to do with the Infinite Dragonflight and give Chromie some real meaty stuff, I don't know. Have Azshara make a pact with the Djarden or the Primals or something idk. I'm staying cautiously optimistic because I think so far Dragonflight has done a very good job story wise, but I'm still gonna be a little wary after the last two expansions.
A modern interpretation of the Dimensius we fought in TBC is that if Void Lords are the equivalent of a Void pantheon like titans, then we just fought an avatar, like the one Sargeras used before Aegwynn destroyed it.

I honestly don't remember ANYTHING about coins in the journal, and I was there throughout pre-patch and until now. It didn't appear for my main or any of my alts, and I've done all the quests and side quests already.
Log in, open your journal and tab through all the options, it always appears last for my toons. I don't think it ever popped up as a quest.

Goblins helping Neltharion and Azshara (And building their new settlement in Azshara). And they really, really like coins... We don't know if Pigmies are Titan failures like Troggs and Drogbars but visually, it fits. And Kaja'mite... Giving you IDEAS!.

Sure, Humans, Dwarves and Gnomes too. But Humans turned to Order and Light via Tyr's legacy. Dwarves are pure order, following Khaz'goroth for a while and turning to Norgannon for Knowledge.
It will not surprise you, but Gnomes and Goblins have a lot in common. But Gnomes were Mechagnomes, used and loved by Mimiron. While Goblins, well... They were experiments, left to themselves when the fun passed just like Troggs and Drogbars. Gnomes were inclined to follow order, but Goblins, no. Goblins had to prove themselves. No Uldaman for them. So they reproduced. A lot. And became Azeroth's most influential trade markets. But why? And how?... Well... If mom's all over my other siblings, I guess I'll turn to dad, right?

I get a very “NeverEnding Story” vibe from this like one day they’re going to address us directly as players instead of our characters. Ultimately though, the whole idea of us being unbound by fate means we have plot armor and will never lose.

This is what Thal'kiel aka Skull of the Man'ari has to say about Elisande and her scrying. "Her attempts to control times flow are futile. Subtle forces work against her. Ones far more powerful than she could ever imagine." So with this it sounds like somebody was manipulating what she could see. I do agree that for the most part the players do achieve what was thought to be impossible, just the Elisande reference is kind of hard to say because of what Thal'kiel says
I would race swap from Night elf to play an Ethereal. And Night Elves are my favorite race.
It would be cool to see the old gods come back to help fight off the void lords. Especially if the old gods get new fancy void visage forms
To be honest, I see the Void Elf's starter zone and I love it. But I can't imagine a full expansion like that. Imagine every zone, always dark and void... Full of void related creatures. I mean, I love it. But they need to really expand the field. Xal'atath (weird you didn't mention her I think) is like an upper society void member? They need to give us lore, how (and who from) the void "nourished" Azeroth, how much we don't know about it... If we go to a void expansion place, I hope they have great ideas and big imagination so it does not feel repetitive. I trust them.

I don't speak for all WoW players but I've been wanting to have the etherals as a race/class since legion so I'm ready for them. I would suspect though since we just got a healer/dps in Dracs and tank/dps prior then just straight up dps would be next. I'm down for that! Maybe one spec is ranged, one melee and third one a combo of the two. Wishful thinking I'm sure but who knows, it can happen.
One of the ethereal state that they summoned the void and let it consume their world to transform their bodies and acquire immortality. The brokers are also a divergent of them.
When the Void expansion eventually arrives we better get playable Ethereals along with it.

This whole thing brings a question to mind. How did the Outland black dragons get back to the dragon isles? And were they the only ones that took that path?
There are portals in Shattrath to the major cities, it's not like Outland was completely abandoned when the expansion ended.
@@OrbObserver true, portals being maintained by mages. Be it Alliance, Horde, Dalaran, ect. People would have tabs on who comes and goes. SI:7…the horde equivalent, the uncrowned, ect. And it’s evident that Wraithion would have his finger on that pulse. So either he is out of touch, playing dumb, or the Outland black dragons came through a different portal. …this could all mean nothing…or other factions are involved

In a perfect world we’d get both brokers and ethereals as playable races, idec about transmog restrictions they’d bring, become so desensitized to it because of mechagnomes and dracthyr, I want me a playable energy being who glows and has an exotic culture and voice who’s low key as greedy as a goblin and as knowledge obsessed as any mage
They missed a huge opportunity by not making Death-Ethereal's in Shadowlands.
What if the old god corruption isn't actually void but free will. What if the supposed most powerful titan yet to come didn't have the strict order mind set of the titans but free will to see the big picture

I've always wanted the Ethereals to be a playable race since TBC. Imagine playing an Ethereal paladin who's always looking for the best deal and manipulating lesser species for god knows what. Would be great for roleplay and just cool in general. Much like the pandas, they'd have to be a neutral race since playing both sides of the fence is more....profitable

The "Curse" of Flesh is not a curse and comes from exposure to Azeroth's spirit. The Titans call it a curse and blame the Old Gods because they just want us to antagonize them. (???)
maybe the heroes of Azeroth are Paracausal, they sit outside of the hand of fate, making their own fate, it's an idea that's used within the Destiny franchise for the Guardians, it very much sees fitting
Ehtereals are near to beings of pure energy, which would seems to give them an innate susceptibility to cosmic energy forces. The brokers are just death-aspected ethereals, and have likely been so long enough to develop their own unique culture but are still driven by their mercantile nature. I doubt they have any grand plans outside the Shadowlands, content to continue in their way as eternal beings of acquisition.

i think the next expac will have us venture to another continent, alliance and horde together, unable to return to the azeroth we know for the duration of the next expac. while we are away, these guys take over, and the team have remodelled all the old areas, and void stuff

Well, since every cosmic force has a goal it inexorably strives towards, due to it's very nature (much like the Chaos Gods of Warhammer/40k), it would make sense that they are limited in what ways they can affect the material plane. Whenever one tries to get control, it gets beaten back by Mortals influenced by Azeroth. Why Azeroth? Well, we know most of the races sprang forth from either elements, including Spirit, Order, or the manipulation of these two by Void. So, as living things come into contact with Azerothian influence, thier ability to manipulate balance past what any of the primal forces can naturally forsee, stems from being an amalgam of all of these different forces' influence. We can choose, conciously or not, to draw strength from one source or another to shift the balance, breaking through nexial points of "fate" to dismantle those knots and the paths unwinding now builds new ones in the eternal struggle of the primal forces. We're the scaletippers. It seems the Void has figured out that "hmm, maybe we should stop messing with these creatures and just observe them, see if we can glean more info in what possibilities seem more likely than if we, by our own nature, drive full steam ahead over and over". So instead, they're letting themselves fade into the background more than usuall and just... Watch. With many eyes. Trying to predict the way we choose on a whim to cook the spaghetti of fate this time, compared to other times.

I'm confused...i thought the fel was chaos, which is why the titans of order were weak to it. Now the void is chaos? did i miss some realignments at some point? after looking at the cosmology chart, im even more confused because shadow is right next to order and light is right next to chaos, so doesn't that mean that light is more chaotic than shadow? does that mean the old gods are of light or death and enslaved by shadow?
It’s also confusing how the void and death are so similar too. They both corrupt and use mind control magic. They both want to defeat Azeroth.
Actually the void is not necessarily chaotic nor orderly. It’s just capable of seeing all possibilities without knowing what’s true.

I have always loved lore theory crafting and such. You do a great job with these but I don't have any faith left in Blizzard as a company. I'm sure they have some great people still there but I have to accept this isn't the same company I grew up with. I decided never to return to "retail" WoW ever again after BFA but I can still enjoy the "story" from the sidelines.
I believe the planet Azeroth has a unique quality in the cosmos which puts it outside of the normal universe's space and time. It's an anomaly, maybe the planet was never meant to be and it formed anyways. That could be the reason so many entities want to possess it. None of the old gods sent into the cosmos encountered a planet like Azeroth. Thus, maybe the old gods sent to Azeroth were changed by the planet giving them a sense of free will and purpose outside of their mission and what the Void Lords wanted. That could be the cause or source of the rift between the old gods and the Void Lords. Azeroth being a unique anomaly in the Cosmos can also be the reason our fate is so hard to see. The Nightborn are an evolution of the Trolls, which are a native species to the planet, Humans are not. Humans evolved from a creation of the Titans (Order) and the Old Gods (Chaos). This is why humans have no "Fate". They are writing their own history in real time, no matter what forces are acting against them.
