My uncle got me playing a pc game called Viper: Racing, where you could fine tune the car (a Viper) and I, off course, went ahead and jacked the car all the way up to make an Off Road Viper. You are actually making my 8 year old self dream come true. Thank you! Please, don't die.

Been waiting for this. You inspired me ... I found an Viper RT/10 model kit on sale real cheap and I'm going to roughly follow what you are doing and build it for off road. Granted, it's a lot easer to work with plastic, and it doesn't actually have to work. 🙂

@@richardturk7162 that’s like saying just because you have a job doesn’t mean you’re a master at your profession… goes without saying. Every bit of my work is done with open discussion to decide if it will work or be profitable. If you think all new ideas or plans will be perfect, you end up with production products that fail. You can’t claim to be an expert. Engineeing is basically professional guessing, until the company and it’s workers make money. The degree is simply a special tool kit for the job of engineering.
In my experience, the last couple years of engineering got easier since courses like calculus were over and easier, more practical courses are placed in the last couple years. Now my job is far easier than school was, too, because there's absolutely no studying or tests required, just designing things. You're probably about at the peak of despair right now, where you've ran out of the energy you might've had at first but you feel like there's still a lot of time left. It should continuously get better from here, especially since you'll be able to earn decent money after you graduate that you can use for the kinda of things you see in videos like these.
I studied engineering. Don't really do anything you'd call engineering these days. Still, did a job interview recently and when asked "what do you consider your greatest strength?" I went with "I think like an engineer... albeit mainly now I work with machines made out of people [organisations]". Even if you've learnt engineering isn't really for you, it's still really transferable and useful.
My favorite thing about SFM projects is that he actually engineers the stuff. Nothing against bolt-ons or anything, but something about an engineer who can fabricate is just cooler.
Once upon a time, with a 1972 Dodge Dart (4-door sedan), I installed the (5th ? replacement, very torquey modified Slant Six) rear axle UNDER the leaf springs (involved some minor welding of the leaf spring mounts, otherwise plug-and-play). Then I crawled under the front end and cranked up the torsion bar adjusters to level out the car. Got an "alignment" (surprisingly drama-free). By this trivially-easy means, I ended up with a Dodge Dart car that I had to reach up to open the door, and it was slightly difficult to clamber up and into. And yes, 'Yee Haw Hoot Holler', we did some Dukes of Hazard jumps, even passing an off-road truck that was on the trail by going off the trail (through the bushes). Complete and utter nonsense. Great fun.
Hey Matt, something to check out for your possible 8HP 8speed swap is a Polish company called TurboLamik, they do a standalone TCU for those transmissions and even allows you to do custom setups like keeping the original Viper clutch pedal for clutch dumps in an automatic transmission which sounds like something SuperFastMatt would do.
There is an Australian TH-cam channel call 'Zero to 60' and they put the 8HP's in BMW's and drift cars, they have a ton of videos on different aspects and setups that would be helpful to you. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the offroad Viper goes!

Ford 8.8" axle/diff from a e-150 van 1977-1986, it's 69.25" wide, my grandpa used one for a gasser back in the day that was pushing 500 to the wheels, the Ford 8.8" diff has excellent aftermarket support and I would recommend it for this project
Consider using the requisite belly pan as a full-length structural member. I can imagine trusses along the frame connection points that would significantly reduce the inclination to close up like a folding knife on hard landings.
I was about to comment about that, but you beat me to it. Lots of gussets for sure. I was thinking a roll cage tied in, but that would be an extremely tight fit and might not work.

If you did decide to keep with an IRS instead of solid axle, I've heard amazing things about the '03-'06 expedition rear end. It's just a ford 8.8 minus axle tubes, so there's tons of aftermarket for lockers/etc.

I made it about 200ft in my boss's Viper before looping it around the first corner. It was a wide round almost cul-de-sac that happened to also be a corner, so I went for it and went around. I have always loved how both great and terrible the Viper is.
The Viper's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness; the first few generations had absolutely zero driver aids, incredibly neutral handling, and enough low-end torque to slow the rotation of the earth. Combine that with people's tendency to not drive them enough to force them to change the tires very often, leading to dry rot, and you have a car that will chuck you at the nearest tree without hesitation. Put fresh rubber on it and make sure the driver understands that the gas pedal is practically an on/off switch in terms of immediacy, and even a 1st generation Viper is remarkably well balanced and predictable.

"is it safe? probably not, The viper is known for sending its drivers off-road constantly... which is exactly where I'm planning on taking it, so it should be fine." fixed that for you.
Also i like how as soon as you lift the viper 6 inches it goes from looking like a hot hot muscle car to a mildly goofy tongue floating on a dune buggy suspension.
The 8HP is a great transmission, and should have a lot of options available for 4WD transfer cases, if you decide to go that route. My RAM 1500 has a 8HP + 4WD transfer case. You also have AWD options if you wanted to, I believe several Dodges used a center diff with the 8HP.
This is literally the most insane, yet well-rationalized, researched, developed, engineered and explained concept I have ever seen on TH-cam...
I'd use a Ford 8.8 rear axle out of an early Explorer. Width is with in .5" of a stock Jeep and they have good aftermarket support since it's a common swap into Jeeps since they are stronger than the stock Dana 44. A lot of lockers are available, upgraded axle shafts and trusses too. They can be found cheap in a junkyard with disk brakes or you can get a built one from East Coast Gear and Supply.
This. Dana 44s break with any amount of torque and decent sized tires. And since hes going to be shock loading the diff with jumps, and doesn't want to build a 9in, the 8.8 is the obvious choice. I guess there's always Dana 60s as well. But those are a fair bit wider.
I was a little disappointed turbine charger didn’t win, and I still hope we see that someday in the distant future, but this video got me seriously hyped for the viper.

When you said "This car is so American that there is no metric conversion" I was in love. But then you failed to state that the *8 Litre* engine displaces Four Hundred Eighty Eight Cubic Inches! ;)
It think the beam axle tips it over the line from offroad Viper to no-longer-a-Viper. With zero Viper parts in the suspension at either end, and major frame changes, you might as well put the V10 in a 2-door Bronco (for IFS and beam axle rear) or Wrangler (for beam axles front and rear) and top it with a Viper hat - the Wrangler wheelbase even works, and the Bronco is close.
Gotta say, now that the MORR Wrecker is basically done, this is the build I'm looking forward to the most.

Every new project you start, Matt, I think, "So THIS is how we lose you." Having tasted a Viper when I was a tiny kid and my dad found it on his list of permitted company cars, all I can say is, "build that cage STRONG!"
I've been dreaming of a build like this for years. I've thought about everything from a lifted WRX to an LS400, just love the idea of taking an otherwise normal car and making it off-road capable. Plus, you never know when you'll need a bug-out vehicle these day! Will be watching this.

The roof basket can be swappable if you mount it to the frame of another roof (can probably find one almost new because some people will have them off the car when they fly off the cliff) thus preserving the original and adding utility only when you need it.
As a kid I loved the show Viper. I recently picked up the DVDs and yeah, it doesn't hold up well unless you really like cheesy 90s TV shows, in which case, it's excellent.

I used to off-road the Mojave and Sonora deserts with veteran off-roaders from Hemet, CA. We always poked great fun at the people who got flat tires...they are avoidable for the most part. we also heaped scorn on those people who drove jeeping trails like they were in the Baja 500....they were not loved by the rest of us....
That looks like so much researching and thinking. I'm very excited to watch more videos about the things you've already figured out instead of getting my own headache.
The zf 8hp70 is a solid choice. They’re absolutely everywhere, lots of aftermarket parts and controllers, best of which have auto learn functions that work great, and tons of shifter options.

All hail the reasonably safe algorithm. And remember….. anything worth doing, is worth doing to extreme !
You probably need to change some of the suspension geometry slightly. Every time I try to remember suspension design, I remember how complicated it is. But, I remember that the roll center is ideally some distance between the Center of gravity and the road surface. If you lower the entire suspension, like by moving the mounts, you will end up with a roll center far below the center of gravity, which will greatly increase the body roll of the vehicle. Body roll is primarily determined by the distance between the CG and RC.
Based on the preexisting characteristics of the Viper, as well as off-roading it, you will probably want a lower rear roll center, and a higher front roll center. A higher front RC will make the Viper more biased towards understeer under throttle, and decrease traction roll (tendancy to want to flip) while off throttle, which both would be extremely beneficial on dirt. A lower rear RC will increase traction to the rear.
But, changing the RC will mean changing the control arm angles or lengths. Good Luck, it'll be worth it to dive down the dozens or hundreds of hours of research to get the geometry right.
That part about making it off-road turning it up to 13 for little-me is so, so true for my 5 year-old. He is absolutely all about all cars going flat out over everything. He is going to *love* your 4x4 Viper!

I absolutely have loved the Viper more than any other car since the day it came out. There are so few out there in great condition that are affordable... But I absolutely approve of this project. Thank you for doing this, from a lifetime Viper lover.
A friend of mine got a 1st generation Viper that was salvaged , it went into the bushes off a freeway. Little cosmetic damage, 100% structurally and mechanically sound.
Pumped to see what you do with the 8HP transmission swap. Some aftermarket controllers will let you keep the clutch pedal as an e-clutch.

A few decades ago I owned a '77 Firebird with a 400 Poncho engine, glasspack exhaust, and the glorious shaker scoop. That car would also get sideways at inconvenient moments.. and the exhaust and carb made a magnificent symphony. More importantly, it taught me something about myself. I learned that I like my cars to feel like I just strapped a saddle on a grizzly. Which means the Viper was built just for me. I don't want traction control, ABS, stability control, or heated tampon applicators.
Beware. I have a $500 beat up Gen 1 Viper bumper in my garage. The headlights go for $2k-$3k a piece used, like with holes and cracks in them used.

Just some notes on the 8hp70 speed trans swap idea. The valve body is the controller/tcm of the trans. It is all electronically controlled via solenoids. The bell housing bolt pattern has a good chance of being the same. Make sure you have a way to manually release the parking pawl and keep it held, from somewhere inside the car, as the trans does not stay in neutral without the park pawl solenoid being powered up. Stay away from the the "upgrade" version of this trans that uses coolant to help heat and cool the trans, unless that is feature that you feel you must need to delete.
I'm pretty happy you chose this, it'll hopefully give me some insight and a little confidence because I'm trying to get my first gen Rav4 set up for rally. It's got the bones, since the drivetrain is Frankenstein'd from a Celica gt4 out of the factory, but there's little to nothing in the aftermarket scene so everything is gonna need fabrication. I've done little to no fabrication in the past on automobiles, I barely know where to start. And throwing around terms like suspension geometry, lead angle, camber, knuckle strength, dual sheer strut mounts. It's gets disheartening very quickly. So I'm hoping the next 8 months will be informative ones. This is my only car, and the only car for me, so it'll break my heart if I fuck up. If you read this, tips on how to do this or where to get info or help would be priceless. Speaking of priceless, physical tips too.

Sounds like what you need is a 1998-2003 Ram 2500 parts truck. Came with V10 auto trans and disc brake rear axle around the width you want. Dana 70 with tons of aftermarket gearing and locker choices for way less than your $2500 bronco idea. It will change the wheel bolt pattern over to 8x6.5 but that might not be bad thing and you can always mod front uprights to take the ram unit bearings for easy replacement and gets you the same bolt pattern.
Not a big fan of offroading myself but really interested in the design work. Loved the series so far

It would almost make more sense to build a custom frame off the bat instead of tying the suspension into the thin walled factory frame. That way you could steal the factory geometry and axles of a wrangler or bronco and only have to figure out the transfer case and driveshafts.
Try the 14 bolt full floater 8 lug rear axle out of a 2002 Chevy Suburban / GMC Yukon XL that had an 8.1L v8 engine. They are known as the 14 bolt AAM and have exactly the 69 inch WMS to WMS and were leaf sprung with standard shocks so cleaning the tubes for 5 link setup would be relatively trivial. They also came with a 4.10 or 3.73 gear ratio standard and can be geared up to a 5.13 if I recall. I spent $129 at a 50% off sale this past weekend to put into my K5 Blazer. This would be awesome to see in your offroad Viper.
I mean honestly, lifting a viper is EXACTLY what it needs to be a GRAT car. A taller, softer suspension and I would even consider adding a transaxle to split the torque of the engine to tame the burn outs just a tad when you need it, more air going under the car will cool your exhaust better, more room means massive radiator swap out for your desert run. This is epic, cool, and completely the correct thing to do to a Viper.

A custom trunk lid with indentations for the tires, tie-down hooks, and drainage out the bottom would be on my build list.

Oh my Gawd the burnouts at the end. I rarely hear a naturally aspirated 8L W10 do burnouts, and you can hear how easily those chambers and pistons do the job. Literally at about 4000 RPM. This block is in fact running at half its output capacity. Talkin' about something being overbuilt, or having enough material in it. This engine noise is literally lazy. Amazing.
I've seen a few Ford Explorer rear ends used for different swaps. Even tons of aftermarket parts and tutorials on how to shorten them if need be.
3.5 times as much fun as a ham sandwich. The world needs this, the world needs you to do this.
