    One thing to note about the tail end of Timmy D’s career is rather than “not caring”, he was simply taking care of his body to battle the young stars of the time. If y’all recall, that spurs team was the first to blatantly load manage and was fined $250,000(!!!!!) for resting their starters in a televised game.

    Basketball is a team sport so saying that Tim Duncan shouldn't be in the top 5 of all time because he was "just" part of the Spurs system and was surrounded by great players is like saying that Lebron James shouldn't be in the goat debate because he played with Wade, Kyrie, and AD throughout his career. There has to be something said about staying with the same organization throughout your whole career and creating a wining culture rather than just leaving your team every time you think they aren't good enough to get to the Finals. Yes, the organization helped make Duncan as good as he was, Pop coached Duncan like coach should and that shouldn't make you look at Duncan any less. MJ had a great coach and Jerry Krause put a great team around MJ and he is still in the top 3 on most lists. When it comes to Lebron being looked at as a top 3 NBA player, people always say look at his accolades, so lets do the same with Duncan.

      I think there’s a distinction between playing with one or two other high caliber players vs playing within a system and you can it in comparisons like this even tho people argue it a lot less Jordan and pippen, Kobe and Shaq and duos of that nature while they get arguments against each other it’s genuinely argued they are both in high regards and it’s not really a system so the context of their accolades are looked at differently and as more individual compared to Duncan and the spurs. A more accurate comparison in this take then Lebron and Ad would be KD and the warriors . Yes KD has the Rings, the finals mvp and it looks great individually on paper but you need the context of the system the warriors had and that changes the way you see Durants individual awards for his time with GsW just like how the video mentioned it was The spurs and not Duncan and the spurs you can say the same here how it Wasn’t Steph and the warriors or KD and the Warriors it was just the Warriors. Because as great as they are individually the system they operated in was so much bigger than just two high caliber players willing their way through the competition. Now obviously Steph won without KD eventually but in that time frame The warriors system was bigger than Steph or KD as individuals.

    i think from 2014 to 2020 you could argue kawhi, curry, durant, and lebron as the best player in the world as they all won multiple rings during that period. durant was the best scorer and most
    unstopable scorer, kawhi was the best 2 way player and was the only player who ever gave the warriors trouble, lebron was the most physically dominant player and the most gifted player, and steph was the best shooter and most explosive scorer

    i’ll drop my hot take
    steve nash’s 2005 mvp seems to be the most widely panned mvp of the last 40 years, if not ever, but i’d argue his 2006 mvp was a lot more egregious
    nash averaged 15.5 and 11.5 in 2005 on 50/43/89 splits, which doesn’t pop by any means, but the suns went from 29-53 (21-40 under d’antoni) the year before, to 1st in a tough west with 62 wins, in large part to nash orchestrating the 7 seconds or less offense.
    2005 was one of the weaker mvp pools ever. this was a pool that saw “pj brown”, a 35 year old on the new orleans hornets averaging 11/9/2 on 45% shooting, get an mvp vote
    the majority of the candidates were rather on winning teams and had underwhelming numbers for mvp standards, were seen as second fiddles to the leaders of their team at the time (like wade or amare), or were players with the better stats that lacked team success the era’s voters required. this season lebron and ai put up the best stats (depending on how you feel on ai’s efficiency), but each won 42 and 43 games respectively
    in my opinion the only clear player robbed by nash in 2005 was ironically dirk, who averaged 26/10/3 on 46/40/87 splits while leading his mavericks to 58 wins, which was 6 more wins than the previous season *despite* losing the eventual mvp from their roster
    2006, however, makes zero sense. nash had better numbers than the year prior, but he had 0 right winning over lebron averaging 31/7/7 while leading the cavs to 50 wins, dirk (again) averaging 27/9/3 winning 60 games, kobe averaging 35 (although i understand the era win tax), or even wade averaging 27/5/7 with 52 wins
    hell, even elton brand lead *the fucking mid 2000s clippers* to 47 wins, 7 less wins than nash that year, while averaging 25/10/3
    now why the hell did my high ass write 8 paragraphs on this? idk. but the context of the 2005 mvp race kinda fascinates me and i still can’t believe pj brown got an mvp vote

    • @TippedScale
      @TippedScale 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      pj brown is goated, idk what to tell you
      but to be serious here, who do you think should've won MVP in 2006 if not for steve nash?

      @meatwad42069 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TippedScale i can respect a cult legend but it’s still wild to me he got an mvp vote that year 😂😭 as far as my 2006 mvp i think i’d say that should’ve been bron’s, he had the best stats/winning combination imo - it was kind of his breakout party and the first year the cavs broke through. if you were to argue 3rd best team in the conference still wasn’t enough winning in that era for mvp consideration, bc it was pretty strict back then, then i’d say dirk again

  • @walterchen2191

    That 2017 Warriors team would dominate this era. They got 2 MVPs in their prime, a DPOY and a all-NBA player on top of it with a good bench.
    The '23 Suns pushed the Nuggets to 6 games. But instead of Booker, you have prime Curry. Instead of 37 years old CP3 facilitating, you have DPOY Draymond and as a bonus you just get Prime Klay, Iguodala and Livingston instead of Payne, Okogie and Craig. '17 Warriors in 5.
    The '22 Warriors are just a worse version. '17 Warriors in 4 maybe 5.
    The '21 Bucks almost got beat by KD and half Kyrie and half of not fully healed Harden. Also went to 6 against the Hawks and Suns, who the '17 Warriors are way better than. '17 Warriors in 4 maybe 5.
    The '20 Lakers just cant keep up. Even if you say Steph/KD = Lebron/AD, they are just outclassed down the roster, compared Draymond, Klay, Iguodala, Livingston to KCP, Danny Green, 34 year old Rondo and Kuz? The '17 Warriors even have a younger McGee, who was the Lakers starting Center. '17 Warriors in 5 maybe 6.
    You can do it for every Current contender and it still wouldn't be close.
    If you take their current version '24 Warriors with KD instead of Wiggins and Kuminga. It would be a discussion.

    • @blazefactor6849
      @blazefactor6849 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It's not that he had good coaching. It's that he was consistently in a fantastic system with fantastic teammates and an All-Time level coach for his entire career, with very few breaks in-between plus a ton of great luck. It's rare that anyone gets that kind of consistent excellence in their basketball environment, much less for like 15 years straight.
      Look at Lebron. His first stint in Cleveland was marred by incompetent management and terrible teammates. His stint on the Heat was good, but then he went back to the Cavs and started having some issues at the latter half, and then the Lakers basically chucked their entire championship roster out the door after they won. Duncan had the perfect storm forming around him from day one, and while he was definitely a massive part of his own success, it's not like he didn't have help. Still a top 10 player of all time easily, but calling him a GOAT candidate is a bit difficult when others have done similar despite even further hardship.

    Westbrook was one of the best players when he won the MVP award and at the same time you could say he was a detriment to the Thunders that year because he had the ball too much and didn't get his teammates enough touches which could be looked at as him not actually being a valuable player. The Thunders only won like 47 games that season. The MVP award isn't for the best player, it's for the the most valuable and if Westbrook couldn't get his team more than 47 win then was he really that valuable. Also KD left the Thunder that year so you could say that Westbrook had to carry his team and they only won 47 games because he didn't have any help carrying the team.

HIS decisions to leave teams and chase instead of helping build teams up is a mental failure that doesn't matter for most superstars, but if you're making the claim that you're the greatest to ever do it, that's a fundamental part of being a leader, and the lack of that quality is enough for me, and many others, to shut the argument down entirely.

      @@flamefusion8963 Tim dominated his era too what do you mean? 5-1 in the finals don’t mean nothing? I’ll give you Bron, MJ, KAJ (in that order) but no way you can possibly believe magic, Bird, and shaq I better than Tim. Tim has more in every stat other than points than shaq. His counting stats are better than the last three guys you named while also having better accolades 15 all nbas, all stars, and all defensive teams 3 finals MVP and 2x MVPs while winning rings in 3 different decades and just like Shaq he should have multiple DPOYs. I wanna say after all this tho I respect the opinion there’s no ill will in my reply I just think it’s crazy that Tim is responsible for 5 HOF careers His, Tony, Manu, Kawhi, and Pop and still people won’t give him is respect

    For me Russell Westbrooks MVP was pretty bad. Stat padded rebounds and a lot of turn overs to get the asssits. Not the worst - probably bottom 3-4 MVPs.
    But you make a good point about Nash, I'm gonna say that was the worst. The season after his two MVPs was actually his best year.
    So based off Westbrook; D Rose is probbaly worst 4-5th thos century.
